Sometimes you get materials like 17-4ph and it gets trickier but this is an amazing video thanks!

On a ten foot shaft, how many blocks would you recommend?

very nice, will this work on a shaft thats two incch in diamater? Thought for sure your indicator was going to melt....

I have done it on 2 inch shafts before. It just requires more time and it will need to be heated many more times. I also like to use a cheap dial just or just remove the dial before heating the shaft so the dial doesn't melt.

Very nice presentation and explanation! Do you do side work? I have a 9-1/2” long drill press spindle that is out about .040”? Thank you

Wow that is a lot. I don't think that is something that this method would fix.

any tips on straighting a Craftsman tubular wood lathe spindle.

You could try this method. Just go slowly by heating a little at a time. If you have access to a press, you could try that too.

A dial indicator

dial indicator on a magnetic stand, if you access to a lathe, drill a centre and then fit a live centre, heat it and spin it, if you are real keen you can make a tool for the post with a bearing on it, this way you can spin it between centres and use the tool post to straighten, you can use a steady but a bearing tool is easier but sometimes a steady is the only way

No torch. I have a slightly bent 8mm shaft, 400mm long. 0.25mm centre gap when placed on flat plate. Cannot get linear slides to run smoothly when fixed to carriage. Used three wooden wedges (half clothes-pegs) as a sandwich between wood boards. In a big metal vice, I can deform up to 10mm+, but the shaft will not take up a permanent correction. If these shafts are in any way through hardened chrome steel? (it may be possible even though from Ebay). I've had no problem bending wrought iron angle and mild bar into exact curves. I'm considering that this bar will just snap at some point, it's behaving like a pretty good spring at the moment.
