THE SONNET PROJECT
Sonnet 124 - Thelma Ruby
www.gofundme.com/f/jermyn-str...
#JSTBraveNewWorld is our programme of work to keep our community connected and audiences enjoying theatre at home.
154 actors will perform Shakespeare's sonnets, in order, one a day.
A minute of hope and beauty each day.
The incredible Thelma Ruby brings us Sonnet 124. Thelma has performed all over the West End and also was in the National Theatre’s production of 'King Lear'. 95 years young and as talented as ever!
GLOSS by Dr Molly Yarn
"Among other things, Sonnet 124 is a witty exercice in repeating words with words in between (diacope). Line 4 (‘Weeds among weeds, or flowers with flowers’) has two, like a woven garland. The sonnet itself ‘was builded far from accident’ with its careful antitheses (lines 12 &14). Opposing transient politics and everlasting love seems to be the major thread here, but perhaps heresy is what I’m really thinking of since a Romish is a heretic to a Reformed and vice versa."
