The Sharp HC4500 and HC4600 share the same rechargeable NiMH battery pack without the option to use disposable cells. Sadly after 20+ years all of these batteries have long since leaked and no longer hold charge.
In this video I am attempting to re-cell the battery but without much luck, if you know how to get this to work please let me know 😀

Can't wait for the no smartphone episode. I daily drive a Nokia 6300 & Dell Axim x50v PDA. The hardest part of living without a smartphone is the fact that feature phones are bad at texting lol. I don't remember how we dealt with it back in the day lol.

That orange light should NOT be blinking. That light stays solid orange. And then when its charged it turns solid green. There should be NO blinking. So something is going on here. Id investigate that.

Well I'd have a problem with this - I don't own a hair dryer so I'd never be able to get in the battery case lol. Awesome video as always - I liked the introduction and the magnet idea is inspired!

Ha ha! Yep the magnets make it super easy for testing circuits. Hoping I can get the HC4500 working for a proper video!

@@HandheldComputing The first video I saw about a month or so ago with a Join button, I hit it and thought it went through, I was so excited! The best option is to disassemble the device and sketch the section of the circuit responsible for power and charging. Many issues will be resolved.

I got a plan on remaking battery packs for some of my vintage handheld devices, since I want to make easily removable cells and USB-C power input, so I can play around with any devices easily, and when I am done, it is easy enough to remove a cell put it safely to storage. I got Toshiba Librettos, which need new battery packs badly, unfortenatly I dont have Sharp HC4500 for reference, so not sure what could be wrong, but perhaps batteries wired a little differently to what you did. My work on new battery packs will take awhile, since I got a large backlog of projects, and they basically would need to be remade from scratch to house new cells and new electronics.

Let me know how you get on, I have the CT50 and plan to re-cell the battery but didn't think of making them removable 👍
@TheKsax
@TheKsax 5 ай бұрын
The issue I encountered, is that cells size, which Libretto used are no longer made. I could have failed in the search for it, but no major electronics supplier I checked had them. So using different cells, a smaller or fewer, but bigger cells could be a sollution, but battery might need a voltage booster and ideally proper battery protection. And if cells are removable, then storage is much less of an issue, while keeping laptop look complete.

I haven't opened up the battery pack, but it looks very much like it will contain 3 18650's - just be aware that if you buy ones with built in charge protection they are longer and so wil not fit!@@TheKsax

I wonder if one of the negative (-) wires needs to be connected in between the cells so the machine can see the voltage of the individual cells. To me it seems like the machine needs positive (+) on one end of the pack, negative(-) from the other end and the third wire goes to the casing of the first battery which would be a connection in between the 2 replacement batteries you have on the table. That way the machine can see voltages of each individual battery.
@HandheldComputing

That would make sense, I will give that a go before I disassemble the device and go looking for failed capacitors etc.... 😃

I had a similar problem with my nec 900c. I used a 7.4v 2s lithium ion battery. The battery would have a charge but just not enough. There's a voltage cutoff and it can be plugged but it won't charge. I had to recharge the batteries with another and then plug it into a lipo charger. I make sure never to leave it plugged into the palmtop or it will kill the battery due to parasitic draw. I just unmount the battery and it can stay charged alot longer. I hope you can resolve the issue.
@HandheldComputing
@HandheldComputing 5 ай бұрын
Its a massive issue with Li-ion batteries, most charge circuits won't charge them if they drop below 2.5V - you can sometimes revive them like you have done. Not an issue with NiMH, they can go totally flat with no harm to the cell. Going to keep trying, as I want to use this PDA!

Do you have a video on how to reinstall Windows CE? I have done all Windows (but never CE), with the operating system (iso file) on a CD or USB drive. My device is not booting, saying "no nk.nbc found on CF card, DOC.CE load failed." Yes the device has an application running on CE, I believe, and the app runs from the CF card.
@HandheldComputing
@HandheldComputing 3 ай бұрын
Most of the consumer devices using CE have it stored on a ROM chip. Some netbooks and commercial devices can be re-flashed with new versions of CE but it isn't something I have done. Have a look on www.HPCfactor.com and ask on the fourums there, I'm sure the friendly members there will be able to help 😃

There may be a microswitch installed inside the case, so the batteries on the wires may not work.
@HandheldComputing
@HandheldComputing 5 ай бұрын
Good thinking! That did occur to me as there is a prong on the battery case. If there is a switch I think it may be broken though - going to do a disassembly I think so I can get it working!
