Here I take my brand new Hanwei Tinker Viking sword which wasnt as sharp as I would have liked and make my first attempt at sharpening a sword on my bench stones.
I will be honest there were a few moments where I wondered if I was going to ruin it but all in all it turned out ok.

I am a historian, and u are spot on. This goes for armour as well. Aslo, this is an aside but a knight in shining armour would also have a sircoat bearing early heraldic symbols unique to him and later a family with a "change". Also many castles were whitewashed to prevent fire and insulate the structure. Also, many curators and historical pieces are brought to a high Shean. This look fabulous, but it is my belief this would not be how it looked in the period.

For blending edges I use a stick about 16 inches long and 1-2 inches wide with emory cloth or sandpaper strips held to the wood by the grip of your hands allows you make long strokes at calculated angles. If you want more blending use a thinner stick or some backing (mousepad, felt, leather) to allow the sandpaper to deform more. It is very important to push your strokes slightly away from the cutting edge along the length of the blade so you dont loose a finger. The use of a mousepad and sandpaper on a flat surface will also allow one to grind a convex edge on a blade. I really appreciate you showing your method, and especially the reminders on safety and distraction avoidance.

I believed swords DID looks nice.. b cause trained men were cleaning, sharpening, and polishing every night around the fire. But, yeah, it’s not big deal if a blade gets worn doing it’s job. I’m about to sharpen my sword for the first time: I believe swords will regain their purpose in the near future. You seem like a nice guy; I hope you stay safe and help others keep the peace.

Nice video... enjoyed it....From a historical aspect this sword comes very close to some originals. (In design) Apart from the modern materials of course. In the Viking era a lot of swords were highly polished though. I customized mine, and it is probably my favorite viking sword of many..And I own a lot more expensive ones. It's a perfect sword for customization..... cheers

Thanks for the informative video. Planning on actually getting a Tinker so very helpful. I do have a question about what grit whetstone to use? Especially for a semi sharp sword.
@WoodcraftHamster
@WoodcraftHamster 8 жыл бұрын
If you excuse the pun it's a bit of a double edged sword! You can use a finer grit but it will take a lot longer to remove the necessary steel or a coarser grit but you then spend the time later refining and polishing. If it is very blunt I would say a coarse grit like 200 to start and get the profile right then work your way up to a 1000 or higher to get everything nice and shiny. Wet and dry paper is great for final finishing. If the profile is good and the blade mostly sharp then a 1000 grit should be fine and if it turns out not to be enough you can always revert back to the coarser grades. Hope that helps.

Doesn't polish do the same job as the blending in with the sand paper? It takes away a tiny layer of metal and makes the blade match the edge.

Filip Plotek exactly right, I tend to use the sandpaper as I have a ready supply of it and don't often do any metal polishing but both would work. In fact I could probably get a better blend if I polished after the fine sanding.

Great video dude, Would sharpening a sword on a bench stone work on those swords that are designed to be blunt? because i really want to get a bastard sword but the prices of them are insane so i was planning on getting the blade on it's own and build the rest myself but they dont do sharp blades... so would i be able to add a point to a blade with one of these bench stones? Much appreciated.
@WoodcraftHamster
@WoodcraftHamster 8 жыл бұрын
It should be possible to sharpen any sword in this manner, though if it is really blunt it might take some time and you may need to use a file to get the profile right. The biggest problem you will find is blunt swords are unlikely to have been treated and tempered the same way a sharps are leaving you with a less than ideal edge once sharpened that will either be too soft or too brittle.

Hello I was thinking about getting a sword fram Ryan Swords (Brisingr Eragon Movie Sword Handmade 1095 High carbon steel) Can you cut yourself easily with a sword or do you have to put force into the swings to do any cutting with the sword All the sword I have are very dull or blunted. I dont plan to doing anything stupid but if the blade made little contact with my body would it cut though me or if am just touching the blade, will it cut me. I was talking to them, and they told me then could make the sword without sharping it. Do you thank that would be the best? I dont plan on cutting with it. most of the time it's going to be hanging on my wall or a maybe swing it around a little in my backyard. Eragon was one of my favorite movies when I was a kid. Because of the dragons Great video Jonko

As strange as it may sound I find sharpening oddly therapeutic. Knives and axes in particular but pretty much any bladed tool, I think I just go to my "quiet place" and zone out the rest of the world while I move the blade back and forth. Maybe I should try marketing it as some kind of zen meditation technique. :)

I disagree with the statement made about historical swords not being kept in pristine shape, as some swords were gilded and engraved on the blade, additionally keeping them pristine would make them last longer which was very important back when only a master smith with a week's worth of work, and expensive, impure raw materials. Swords were an heirloom.

This video is about sharpening swords. You don't even give the grit on each side of your whetstone, and then proceed to sharpen it with a dry stone! That's a wonderful way to wear down your stone abnormally fast and give you a rougher edge, but it's not a good way to sharpen your blade. At the very least your stone should be well soaked with water and have water applied to the stone throughout the process. What is far better though is to use a light mineral oil (not WD-40). Three in one oil has a God balance but light, clear oil is better. When you are finished, wha she your stone with some liquid hand soap or dishwashing liquid. That will remove all of the excess metal debris that clogs up the grit of your stone over time. Never use a dry whetstone! ⚔️

I mean, I guess it depends on where you're talking? In the 1400's in most of Europe it was still common and law in most places that only nobility or knights were allows to carry around swords inside a towns walls, and their high price and manufacturing time made them an incredible status of wealth and power. Being a weapon that requires a lot of training in order to use effectively the "common mans" weapon were actually axes, hatchets, spears, hammers, etc, all these were just as deadly as a sword with far less of a learning curve. Spears and pikes were often the more sought out after because of the range advantage and how easily made they were. A line of spear or pikemen were far more influential on a battlefield than a row of men with swords and shields, and costed nearly a fraction the price and practice.

I do keep a hand and half sword by my bedroom door, way I see it; it's a hell of a lot more effective than a baseball bat

Gladius machete. Not a “real sword” but small, usable in hallways and small rooms with a range just a little shorter than a baseball bat. I don’t live in fear and never expect to have to use it but for 24 bucks it offers peace of mind and is a fun tool as well that isn’t just a safety blanket. Something like a longsword, katana or the more typical blades people have? Usually too long to be very effective indoors.

@Mina69a a longsword is a longer and heavier power swinging weapon with not much room to swing in a modern home.. you would get shanked with my gradius coming into my home with it

That's very true when is comes to historical swords however I think it is a lot more common nowdays where swords are used for cutting practice.

No...they should be shaving sharp. Yeah, believe it or not you actually want a sharp blade if you're going to go about cutting people. Shocking, I know.

Fact is, 1 in 200 Vikings actually had swords. They sharpened on stone or at best a whetstone wheel. Now you say shaving sharp. I sharpen straight razors and can tell you that there is NO way they could get shaving sharp back then. Even he says his stone is 250grit on one side and 1000grit n the other. HUH, that's not even close. I have paper that goes into the 50K microns. IMO, a decent edge on a working knife is at 1500grit. If you looked at an edge under a microscope, a 1500grit, blade looks like a buzz saw blade edge. When I take it to a 50K microns, it puts a mirror finish on the edge and under a microscope it looks completely straight.. So unless that edge has a mirror finish, it's not razor, shaving sharp.

cchgn "1 in 200 Vikings actually had swords. " Irrelevant. "They sharpened on stone or at best a whetstone wheel" Uh....you do realize they had razors(albeit not as fine as modern ones) and shaved back then, right? Oh, and they had sharpening wheels - which could be water powered or foot-powered. Oh, and....um...I'm not sure if you know this *but the Japanese sharpened their swords on the same shit* and they did just fine. " If you looked at an edge under a microscope" A powerful enough microscope and it will look like that regardless of how fine the grit. " it's not razor, shaving sharp." No...it's shaving sharp if you can shave with it cleanly. No one said "razor sharp". Don't move the goalpost. " a decent edge on a working knife is at 1500grit" That's somewhat excessive, but it depends on what you're cutting. And I'm pretty sure they could cut stones that fine.

Swords that aren't shaving sharp fail against the simplest of armor (gambeson, i.e. a few layers of cloth). It doesn't matter if the edge doesn't last for hundreds of cuts. Most battles won't last that long for you. And believe it or not, people would probably rather resharpen and put effort into their sword after every encounter, than not do so and then getting slashed to mince-meat by someone else who did. Swords are not axes. Their balance is not in the striking point. They are not clubs, bone breakers or armor beaters. Stop perpetrating that myth. Any armor that can't be cut with a sharp sword, won't be cut with a less sharp sword either. And at that point if probably shouldn't be attacked with a cut in the first place. Swords that are used against armor or primarily for thrusts have bad cutting performance because of their very design, not because of the final edge you put on them. The swords in this video that 'fail' against even the very thin gambeson are still sharp enough to cut tatami, according to their owner. The one that actually cuts through the gamebson and into the test target is considered 'shaving' -sharp. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/q7Zkqq9-0taRaIk.html
