Shawn James of My Self Reliance Shares His Secrets while in Baird Country (Podcast Ep.#1)
Welcome to episode 1 of Baird Country, my new podcast. For the audio versions of my podcasts, head over to Spotify, Apple and wherever you get your podcasts.
In this one, I ask Shawn how he got into the outdoors, what his journey was like and when he decided he just had to make his passion for the outdoors his life. We're talking about a guy with an extremely good work ethic here. As a long time friend of Shawn's I tried to get to the bottom of his mid set and asked him what goes through his head when he manages to get outside in temps as low as -30 to work at the physically demanding job of hauling large logs around to build the remote cabin he lives at for much of the year.
Shawn shares some insights into what motivates him and also talks about some of the intricacies and challenges of building a cabin using all hand tools. Naturally, we talk about the outdoors, Hunting, Fishing, Canoeing and camping too, and share some skills and tips that will amp up your next trip.
Enjoy, and please stay tuned for weekly podcast uploads every Monday evening right here on my KZfaq channel. I have a bunch more exciting guests in coming up.

Their discussion at the end is exactly how I feel. I moved from Canada after canoeing all through Northern Canada down to California. Moved to the Mojave desert mountains. I built my own place by myself. Cleared the land put in my own electricity. Put in my own water. Built a spring feed. Put up communication dishes on top of the mountain to go into town. So I just didn't have to deal with the masses. We did it all by ourselves, my wife and I. I can't stand going to places like Disney land, magic mountain, and amusement parks. Where there are lots of people, there are lots of idiots. We are self sufficient for water, I've been on solar since 1992. We drive to town for groceries, and supplies. I can't stand living around people. I'm now 65 years old. And sometimes things can be tough, but we live how we want. I'm a licensed Amateur radio operator, have my own GMRS repeater, and now have starlink. Life is great.

You have brought to me, an Australian bushman nomad, many similarities and funny stories, not of survival, but of living Life in Nature. A Natural State of Being. Kudos to both of you ... Well done mates!

Great stuff boys. The burnout gets real when building, hubby and I built our house just the two of us in just a year and we did enough to move in and damn, having motivation to finish the last 10% of finishing stuff is BRUTAL. Too burned out with businesses and content to care about living with trim and baseboards LOL

Yes, building a cabin in the backwoods with little to no help takes skills that most do not have. My grandfather did this in Canada on Glouster Pool in the 50s, and he had worked in Akron Ohio at Goodyear Tire and Rubber. He built a two-story cabin, then his main house and two more cabins a maple syrup camp, a small sawmill an ice house, four boat docks, and a boat and lighthouse. Where he got those skills I'll never know, and anyone that would know is gone. My hat is off to you fellows and families that live this extraordinary life doing the things that you love. Thanks for allowing me to take a peek at your wilderness adventures and off-the-grid lifestyle.

Great episode! I was only going to listen to half of it and then continue it later, but the conversation was great, so I just kept going lol. Good variety of questions too! Love Shawn and his channels, he has a wealth of knowledge but is very humble and open about his mistakes which I appreciate because he almost seems superhuman sometimes with all the things he gets done lol. Interesting to hear about his mindset while building the cabin, cool that he continues to visualize the final product as he builds it to help keep himself motivated. P.S. your intro animation is really dope!

Loved it! Awesome to hear you two sit own and tell stories about adventures that most of us could only dream about. quick funny story about "ignorant animals. I teach high school Ag (shop class) and I drive a bus at our school, here in NE Alabama. I had a 5 year old on my bus that was absolutely one of the top 5 LOUDEST people that I have ever encountered in life. The kid just could not help himself, but to scream every time that he spoke, and he also NEVER stopped talking. Ever. One morning, he was talking about going deer hunting with his dad over the upcoming weekend. He said that his dad had told him that they were going to have to work extra hard to find some really stupid deer if they were going to harvest one. Dear old dad knew that those deer were going to have to deaf and blind if Little Man wasn't going to scare them off.

An informative exchange. I think both of you are rather unique individuals who have fortunately discovered your passion and place in the world. Many people never get to have that experience for a variety of reasons. You need to be healthy, adventurous, independent, and smart. Many people find themselves trapped by physical limitations, family issues, financial obligations, prejudice, and fear. The next step in your adventure is to begin to think about what your life will be like when your bodies begin to fail and you cannot life a 70 lb canoe, split a cord of wood, complete a. 2 mile portage, or climb a mountain. Life has a way to setting limits even for strong, adventurous, smart men like yourselves. My other thought has to do with our obligation to community. Living in rural areas and being self-reliant has many attractions, but don’t we also have some greater obligation to make a meaningful contribution to society? Escape is understandable, but helping others is an essential part of the human condition. The first obligation is to be able to take care of ourselves and our family, but then we need to be willing to share with those who cannot meet their own needs.

I really enjoyed your first podcast, it looks great and the content with Shawn was fantastic but I many questions, mostly about the two park rangers on the Nahanni River!? Possibly on another episode 😂

Fantastic. Thank you for your first podcast!! I had the chance to move the family to Alaska - in the wild - our discussion was, ‘will the kids want that life?’ In the end we thought we’d wait and let them decide if they wanted that lifestyle. We never made the move. It was right for us at that time - missed opportunity. Have you missed an opportunity of your own?

Shawn James dishing out secrets and stories from the wilderness - it's like a campfire chat with Bigfoot himself! 😄 Your podcast is a goldmine of outdoor wisdom. On my channel, we're exploring similar tales from the wild. Let's keep the campfire stories burning bright!

Great interview Jim. Loved the content . I follow both your journeys on social media. Criticism would be please speak into the microphone at all times. The sound was so low at times I had to put the phone to my eat just to hear. Anyway keep it up and lots of success

Hiya Jim, this was interesting and capitavating. I thought I'd just listen a bit to support you but I was hooked. I feel sure Mr Shawn could hv made university no sweat. Listening to him he has actually 'educated' himself continuously over decades with reading, understanding and applying, (a format in formal education.) A highly intelligent gentleman, strong and sound. Well done Jim, your guiding the conversation was excellent, no long pauses, saying umm or ahh, it was smooth. You could see Mr Shawn was at ease. Well done again a pleasure to listen to. Will u still be taking me on yr adventures, or is the podcast going to be yr career move? Selfishly I hope not. I finished watching your journey Into the Artic with Buck (God rest him,) it was a trial of endurance, wonderful landscape though❣️

Thanks a lot, I’m glad you enjoyed it. They only get better as I get things more dialled in too. I’ll be uploading one podcast each week and absolutely will still be uploading weekly adventure films! 2024 is going to be one of the most exciting years yet.
