You guys did a great job! Especially for not using spray foam before. I run an insulation company for a living. We use these kits quite a bit. These are the same kits that professionals use. Just a few tips. PPE - always wear a full face mask and never take your mask off inside the room or building you are spraying. Also, the two chemicals mix and form an exothermic chemical reaction. It uses the heat to expand which gives you your depth an R value. You should be spraying in about 1” passes meaning you spray enough foam that it expands to 1”. If you spray too thin it won’t expand correctly. You can also use acetone (or Great Stuff cleaner) to clean the gun and clean out the tips so you can reuse them. Just a few tips.

This guys knows his stuff. I have done a lot of this spray myself. you have to get the hang of spraying slower to get it to expand right. You could put down 2.5 inches in your wall with one pass. Also yes face mask is a must.

Just so you know, when you're standing inside without a mask even though you're not spraying it, those aerosolized droplets can still enter your respiratory system as small particles. Please take care of yourself. YOu might think you're strong but you could pay the price later in life. You showed an example of how it drifted outside onto your power banks. It's the same concept for your lungs! You're doing a super job with your shed to home too.

Yeah, the vapors released from the reaction between the two chemicals can literally be absorbed by your eyeballs. You're supposed to wear a full face respirator when spraying the stuff. It's a great product when cured completely, BUT it's nasty when it's curing...
@SegoMan
@SegoMan Жыл бұрын
@@johnuppole once the reaction takes place in the alveoli in the lungs it will never leave, I know of a painter who's life changed overnight because he did not want to wear a respirator while spraying 2 part epoxies. I saw no agitation of the tanks those chemicals need mixed properly. Doing the ceiling first would give you more pressure. Not wearing all the safety gear is your choice however when you post a video on it it sends the wrong message to the rest of the crowd.

I recommend looking up the term "flash and batt". Instead of adding additional layers of foam, you treat the first layer as an air/moisture barrier (and initial insulation) and add an additional layer of R13 pink insulation or Rockwool) on top. It gives you the benefit of spray foam without breaking the bank. Cheers.
@billbray5995
@billbray5995 Жыл бұрын
This is the correct process to take now, the foam sprayed has squat for insulation value, just a air infiltration stopper. Have to add insulation to get the r value needed or buy a BUNCH more foam
@dper1112
@dper1112 Жыл бұрын
@@billbray5995 Well that's not true at all. Spray foam is insulation. It insulates as well or far better than fiberglass, depending on what kind you use. Actually, even when the R value is similar, spray foam performs a lot better because installing fiberglass properly is very difficult.
@netdude
@netdude Жыл бұрын
Absolutely right. Spray foam is about R7 per inch. Most cost effective solution is flash and batt as you've mentioned. Consider what Jared just did... he said there's about 2 inches of foam... that's R14 for $2000. Seriously, just flash it all with foam which would air seal everything... then use batt insulation.
@dper1112
@dper1112 Жыл бұрын
@Robert Swaine It all depends on your goals, right? If heating and cooling is cheap, then fiberglass is great. On the other hand, energy prices are rising. More expensive options that insulate better will pay for themselves over time. If you're planning to live in a place for a few decades, expensive insulation might be nice. If you're building and you can choose your own wall thickness and insulation package, you probably want to sit down with a spread sheet, punch some numbers, and see what makes sense. One advantage of a small house is that even expensive insulation might not break the bank.

If you ever do this in the future, start a stud bay by spraying up both sides of the bay. Then fill the center. This generally results in better air sealing at the stud and prevents it from pulling back from the stud (and you can see in some of the close-ups). Otherwise, nice efficient use of the foam.
