And here's why this show and this scene is so powerful: Sherlock looks up and sees the room emotional and tears and he quickly cannot comprehend what's going on. He doesn't comprehend, just like he said he doesn't. And he doesn't try to figure it out. He doesn't try to escape or bluff. He simply turns and says, "John?" That little line. That ask for his friend. That's their whole of Sherlock's trust in his best friend. And what does John do? He doesn't scoff or berate. He too understands his friend. This scene is perfect.
@MW-km2uj
@MW-km2uj 11 ай бұрын
That's exactly why this scene is so beautifully written. The speech sounds emotional, but it isn't - listen to every line and word, and it is simply Sherlock stating facts. The closest it gets to emotion is when he references Mary's love, and even this is just mere moments after explaining how he sees it but doesn't comprehend. The logic is the point. The speech sounds emotionally written, but its Sherlock-style emotion. Factual praise. So when faced with a room full of emotion, he does the only thing he can think of and asks his best friend for help. He's lost, he's confused and needs saving from the situation, and in doing so reveals just how much he cares for John, even if he can't comprehend why.

The most interesting thing is that the cold insults and criticism at the beginning don't weaken what he says after, they reinforce it. He shows how much of an asshole he can be, and that's exactly why it is so powerful to hear him praising John, because it has to be sincere, and probably even understated. And the second most interesting thing is how Sherlock's first reflex when he doesn't understand people's emotions is to ask John for help.

Sherlock has the notes because just like the rest of us, in this instance, he was nervous. Watson is his dearest friend. But, Sherlock would only show this at a special moment like this. It also humanizes him. Really great scene and echoes of Conan Doyle.

We can also see how he was nervous when the first thing he did after realizing everyone was crying was asking if he did something wrong. I do think this question shows he was a bit desperate by the idea of making such an important thing wrong (I mean, desperate to Sherlock, which is showing the littlest amount of emotion)

This was always my favorite episode in the series because 1. This speech 2. The way he solves the mystery in this episode just feels so different and personal compared to the rest of the show 3. It is probably the show’s only truly John-centered episode. Also, one of my favorite part in this episode is the part where John, the moment he figured out the victim is still alive, quickly took charge while Sherlock, who always the guy in charge of the cases, quickly stood back and let John take the lead. Truly the moment that says Sherlock will solve your murder while John will save your life
@carolinamansur113
@carolinamansur113 2 ай бұрын
The way Sherlock solves the mystery is so different because he had pressure on his shoulders that time - and he felt it. When he continued the speech trying to solve the case, he was also pretty worried about not ruining John's wedding, and saving someone's life while also needing to understand who would be that someone and how but having no time, since it could happen at any moment - and that was probably the last thing he would want to happen at John's wedding (this is clear specially when you see how much he took the best man responsibilities and made sure to talk to every guest to make what they should/should not do just not to ruin John's day). He was kinda desperate, that's why it takes him so long to find out who was the one about to die (I mean... There's one person who's never in public and is also hated by a good amount of people.... Sherlock would've spotted this in a second if he didn't need to entertain a crowd that couldn't really suspect there was something wrong when he himself is not at all a sociable person and doesn't really understands human emotions/reactions in general.) This is the most emotion Sherlock has ever showed (him saying those things but also showing physically) and the whole process of finding things out in this episode has emotion on it. That's why it feels so different

Can only agree with you. Both Gatiss and Moffat each have extraordinary skills as writers on their own. But put them together, or have them collaborate on a project, and this is the quality of work that gets produced. I'd love to be able to pen something so touching. Of course Cumberbatch and Freeman have made these roles into something that only they can play. With the modern-day retelling of these stories, I can only picture these two in the main roles. Even the likes of Downey-Junior and Law (as good as they may be) come a distant second . . . at least for me.

Sherlock opens this speech by talking about contrast - how contrast highlights the beautiful, and then he employs the technique himself, beginning by roundly insulting everybody in the room and establishing himself as an unpleasant character, so that when he delivers on the poignancy in the final lines, the contrast amplifies the moment, reducing the hall to tears. Truly great.

3:07 the fact Sherlock considered he might be “wrong” really shows his growth and love for John. DAMN I LOVE THIS!

This show began to collapse beneath the weight of it's own high standards. It became too self referential,too knowing. But it was still capable of genuinely brilliant writing and performances. This was a highlight for which it is rightly remembered.

1:17 I love the switch here, going from the more characterization the show Sherlock used towards the original personality he had in the books.

Did anyone notice that John paused for a good moment when Sheldon wanted to move on to the stories? A tiny detail that's so incredibly to the observant. Sherlock is bad at public interactions and didn't feel the need to let the applause finish - John very intelligently handled this situation - showing how much he has understood Sherlock over the years.

Martin Freeman has completely owned the " did I just hear that right" facial reaction . Second place goes to the John Krasinski in the American office.

I wish I had a friend that appreciated me like Holmes appreciates Watson. They're close as Brothers. So rare these days! Were it not for TV, we wouldn't see what friendship should be.
