Gran Class is the most luxurious car on Japan's Shinkansen Train. I'll show you what it's like to travel from Tokyo to Hokkaido in first class.
If you like food and travel, subscribe and press the bell icon for notifications. I’m based in Tokyo Japan, so you’ll see lots of Japan based content. However I also travel often so you’ll get to see other parts of the world as well.

If you have ever wondered about that strange long nose on the front of the high speed trains, it's to reduce shock wave issues when entering or leaving a tunnel.

@@rabiac100 Actually it's not the best design for that. A rounded nose is better. Look at French HS trains, which are not designed for a lot of tunnels

This is really over the top! :D The front of the train reminds me of a sleek go kart :D I have to measure my suitcase to see if it's considered large luggage now that they've changed the rules about luggage on the Shinkansen! Kinako pound cake?! Oh, my! Your final destination looks so COLD! I don't know if I could handle that kind of weather. Haven't had to deal with winter for over 40 years! I don't know if my body can hack the cold.

Lotus root is the best vegetable in the world! Or well, it’s a root but you get what I mean... I had it a lot while in China and I just loved it! Both the flavor and texture of lotus root is just amazing! Sadly can’t find lotus root much here in Sweden, there’s just a few Asian style mixed vegetables/wok mixes in the freezer section that may have it but in those bags it tends to be a very minimal amount of lotus root

$341 for a 4 hour train ride is not for everyone. It is a damn nice ride and experience though. However, the standard class fare on the same Hokkaido Shinkansen service is only $205. My expanded commentary on travelling to Hokkaido with the shinkansen, plane or car are below. The bottom line is that it is best to take the shinkansen. 🚄 🇯🇵

First things first, the Hokkaido Shinkansen is the _exclusive_ method of rail travel from Tokyo to Hakodate, since Hokkaido Shinkansen operations commenced in 2016. The previous conventional train, the overnight Hokutosei service, took a staggering 11hr 32min to complete the historic journey from Ueno (Tokyo) to Hakodate. Train services from Tokyo to Hokkaido commenced in 1988 with the opening of the Seikan tunnel. It is expected that the final extension of the shinkansen to the Hokkaido capital of Sapporo, which is under construction, will be completed by 2031.
@user-kc1tf7zm3b
@user-kc1tf7zm3b 2 жыл бұрын
The Tokyo to Hakodate Station trip using the shinkansen and the Hakodate Liner local trains takes a total of 4hr 26min. The most affordable standard class fare is USD $205. Again, the first class Gran Class costs $341. Needless to say, as Gran Class and Standard class passengers are travelling on the same shinkansen, the travel time is identical. Yes, the plane flight is faster, which is only 1hr 20min, with the cost only being $127. The airport is only 7km east of the station, with the bus trip only being 20 minutes.
@user-kc1tf7zm3b
@user-kc1tf7zm3b 2 жыл бұрын
However, significant additional time and effort is required for transport to Haneda Airport then checking into the airport. It is not uncommon for Tokyoites to use a Haneda airport hotel the previous night of departure as the commute to the airport is too arduous, even if the distance from home to the airport is less than 20km, which would take more than one hour. The airport hotel would cost $70 for the night. So, the total hotel and plane cost is now $197. Hiring a car and driving up to Hakodate, then returning with the same car to Tokyo, is a 24 hour, 1732km return proposition which also requires hotel stays and ferry rides. This option is just not feasible for most. I do not even care to do the sum of all of these damn costs.
