Thanks for supporting me on Patreon: www.patreon.com/user?u=845171 I recently had the opportunity to visit the Shinola/Filson flagship store in Minneapolis. It was my first chance to see the wide variety of wristwatches offered by these heavily hyped boutique brands. Tune in to get my first impressions of the equivalent of Budweiser making craft beer!

These watches are heavily marketed as a luxury watch. You can get a Timex with a simple traditional full Arabic number dial for under $80. I highly recommend the Timex x Red Wing Collaboration Edition ($138), absolutely stunning. Nordstrom currently has it for $80.

The thing I've been thinking about is how many people have an issue with "Assembled in America". Now the watches are pricey, don't get me wrong, that's a different topic. But we are in a global economy now- what does it mean to be "Made in America"? Pickup trucks are the most American thing ever and are mostly assembled in America as well. Now, the point is that while it's assembled in America, many of the pieces and components were made in Malaysia, China and Mexico, etc. But you don't hear any arguments about how they are not really "Made in America". So, what makes something like these watches, which are assembled in America using parts from other countries, not an American product?

I was willing to give this review a fair shake until you said that Shinola's are worth only $150 dollars. Please, please, please give me an example of a single watch from another brand that is $150 and has super-luminova, screw down crown, double curved sapphire crystal, on an alligator or horween strap, a lifetime warranty, makes or assembles absolutely any of its components stateside, and is finished nearly as well as a Shinola. Go ahead, I'll wait. It's at that point I realized that you had a pretentious and irrational disdain for quartz, or the sheep-like groupthink of redditors or watch forum snobs. If this same company dropped a $100 wholesale miyota or entry level ETA in that case, you'd sing their praises. But then, Shinola would only have storefronts full of hipster salespeople and social media coordinators, and wouldn't be employing any of the hundreds of laborers they do to assemble the movements. For someone who obviously views a watch's value as based solely on its individual parts, placing almost all of that summative value on the movement alone is so absolutely ridiculous. $150? Really?
@medopke
@medopke 6 жыл бұрын
I totally agree that the notion these watches aren’t worth any more than $150 is way off base. That said, I have concerns over the vast numbers of discontinued Filsons on eBay these days for somewhere in the $200-$300 price range. I bought a Shinola Runwell at full price and I love it. Then I saw a Filson at Nordstrom Rack for a shade under $300 that I couldn’t resist. Since then, I have added a few more Filsons bargain basement priced on eBay. I believe in the laws of supply and demand, but I think I got a steal on every one of those eBay purchases. I have a few Citizen watches I purchased for about the same price as the Filsons, and I’d say the Filsons, assembled by Shinola, and my Shinola, are superior in every observable respect to the Citizens. And I like the Citizens. The difference in quality and attention to detail is obvious to me. And they are among the most accurate watches I’ve ever owned (other than my $100 Casio atomic). Are they worth $600-$1,000? I have a harder time defending that when the market has been flooded with $200-$300 discontinued Filsons that are new with tags and used to sell for $600+ just a year or two ago. I really worry that Bedrock has risked the cache of the brand by allowing this to happen. However you slice it, though, when you hold one of these in your hand and wear it for a few weeks, I don’t think any reasonable person would have second thoughts about whether these are quality time pieces. The cherry on top is that they are assembled in Detroit.

Another well-balanced and informative watch review. Thanks so much. I've been intrigued by the case design of the Shinola for a while now, since I'm a sucker for vintage or retro-style designs but as your review clearly points out, looks aren't everything. At a fair and reasonable $100 to $150 price point, these watches would be well worth the money. But above that price range, I'd be looking elsewhere. When manufacturers like Seiko can produce and sell mechanicals with robust in-house movements for less than $200, it makes you wonder how Shinola/Filson can rationalize selling a Quartz watch at 2-3 times the price, even when it is "made (assembled) in America". Granted, economies of scale have to be considered, but regardless, the price tag here is just too steep.

I think they are nice, but even the nicer Filsons are vastly overpriced. $500-700 for a quartz movement? No thanks. I understand that it is assembled in the US, but when you compare that to a Victorinox, Hamilton, Steinhart, or Tissot automatic that is assembled in Switzerland and most of the components are Swiss made, all for less or the same money, you are paying a premium for the Filson. This is especially true when you consider you're paying import taxes on a Swiss watch. Great review! Keep them coming! I am always in anticipation of your next great review.

I bought a Filson Mackinaw for $90 used. Yes their "list" prices are high, but you can get them for $150 or less. The movement? Yes, it's basically a Swiss Ronda 515, but did you know the entire movement is assembled in Detroit as well as the rest of the watch? Nothing wrong with the Ronda 715. Many mid grade watches use them, with prices up to $1,000 in some cases. The filson offerings are supposed to be able to take on extreme abuse and no automatic can take the beating a quartz can. What's not to love about them? Beautiful fit and finish, sapphire crystal, 200m water resistance, and Horween leather, the best you can buy. The author of this video doesn't seem to know the product very well. Trust me, if you can get a good price on one of these, buy it. They are outstanding.

+PurityofEssence And there is no merit in paying 500-700 for a mechanical movement either. Let's be clear that ALL watches over $100 are overpriced. Yes , every single one from Seiko to Rolex. Next, there is nothing wrong with a quartz movement. The reviewer keeps knocking quartz and he is wrong to do so. There are plenty of excellent quartz watches. Shinola/Filson watches are priced accordingly, and if somebody likes how they look then there is nothing wrong with paying the asking price. Same as Omega, Rolex and Patek. They are ALL overpriced, but again, people are buying them for the 'name' and the look and there is nothing wrong with that.

I just bought a Filson Scout for about 140 bucks. 10 bucks less than what he said it was worth! Woot , I got a bargain then? I love the way it looks. I don't give a shit if watch nerds think it's cool. I have 2 Hamilton Khaki Field Watches and an Orient Flight and a couple Seikos 5s , watches that generally get approval as affordable rigs from watch guys. And the Filson is as well put together and attractive as any if my other watches, including the Hamiltons. If you like the look of the Shinola it Filson , get it . Don't let some guy on YT talk you out of it because he doesn't like that some pieces of he watch were manufacturered in China . Filsons aren't being made anymore so they can be had at a pretty steep discount now btw. It's a shame because they are really handsome watches .

Think that the Filsons at discounted prices of around $250 is a solid piece with great detail. The 38mm versions are very attractive field watch. $600 retail is overpriced which is probably why Filson isn’t selling them anymore. Pick one up on EBay I’d say.

I agree wholeheartedly with your assessment. I too am a Filson fan. Their leathers and bags are robust; so much so that my wife has not destroyed her Filson tote after several years of daily wear. That is saying a lot. I was hoping and frankly expecting an ETA movement for the price, but sadly this was not the case. At these prices you would be crazy to consider buying one. For nearly the same retail price you could purchase a very nice Oris with a lot more history and character.

First of all, I was born and raised in Detroit, so I am biased. But I am a novice collector and have a small collection ranging from what I consider the priceless Bremont MB1 (look it up and you'll see why), a Breitling Colt, Seikos, Citizen's, Victorinox, and a couple of Filsons as well. Some are automatic, others quartz, and still others Eco drives. Obviously, automatic watches usually command higher dollar prices, however, has anyone noticed the quartz Breitling's priced over $5000? Anyway, automatics are extremely limited in what they can do; however, they are, in some instances, works of art. But because they are so limited, I think we are going to see hybrid automatic/battery operated watches in the near future. But, in regard to Filson, the general good looks, quality of the case, sapphire crystal, and straps alone make it a good watch. If I had unlimited funds, I would pay full price for the entire line but since I don't, I am happy that I got mine discounted. Watches are very personal to those who collect them and each one tells a story. While they may not be made in Detroit, they are assembled in Detroit and are stamped as such. Thus, I am proud to show off that stamp when someone comments on my Filson's. God bless my hometown! You are the engine that has driven the US economy for so many years (Look that up as well and you will be astonished at the percentage of US jobs and dollars tied to the Detroit auto industry). Keep driving on and reinventing yourself!

I've been looking at these watches and I really do want to buy one. Truthfully, I watch a ton of reviews - most times they really "even" out at the end. This video has given me pause.. I really, really want to support anything made in America - especially Detroit - that town and its people deserve something better and I hope this is the beginning of new manufacturing in Detroit. That said, you may have just talked me into buying a different watch. You're right. This price point is off. At this price point the watches should've been automatic. In any event thanks for the video.

TJ Maxx is a great place to pick these up for around $100 to $150 which is worth it in my opinion. I have two; a Mackinaw ($150) and a Dutch Harbor ($100). I'm enjoying them for what I paid for them. I believe I'll get my $$ worth and then some. Would I pay $400? Not at all. I do edc both of these at least twice a week. I think they're great. As for Fossil. $50-$60 at TJ Maxx as well. Don't own a Fossil, but a couple friends do who have attested to the quality for edc. If I needed a cheap watch for edc I would buy Fossil before I dropped any dollars on Timex.

I have two of the Filson Smokey The Bear watches. One was a gift from my wife and I like it so much, I purchased a second when I saw one come up on eBay. It is a handsome watch, but the price is definitely, in this case, due to the Filson name and the rarity of the Smokey watch. Even Filson dropped the prices by hundreds of dollars on other models that didn't move. The bridle leather strap on the second watch I purchased is falling apart, and I don't think it is Horween leather. Yes they are overpriced, but I wear mine daily and really like it. I mention the strap because while looking at replacement straps, I noticed they have done away with the nice roller buckle. Look on the website, and you'll see the new, inferior, design. This is frustrating because if I ever want to sell the second watch, I can't get the original strap, and this will degrade the value as a collectible. I purchased the second so I'd have a replacement if I ever lost or somehow destroyed mine, or to sell If I find the right buyer. I guess the Smokey watch is in its own category as it is a collectible for the entire Smokey crowd.

Yeah totally. I really wanted to support an "American" brand which is why I thought dropping $800 on a quartz was ok. But if we're paying for the high quality labor, and the movement is literally $10, there is no reason why they couldn't get the rest of the watch to be blemish free to the naked eye. The materials were all very nice and the watch was comfortable on the wrist and solid, but I would never recommend anyone buying one of these without seeing the exact one you're buying in person.

For me, the price of a Shinola is worth it. "Worth" is going to be unique to every person on the planet. I totally get most people thinking Shinolas aren't worth the money. As someone who strives to only buy American made goods, a Shinola is a good and important start for the watch industry here. They employ a lot of people and pay them good wages, and they're doing it in a pretty impoverished part of the US. Knowing my gorgeous Canfield helped someone keep a skilled job where they might have otherwise been helpless is priceless. Now I just need to pinch my pennies until I can get dat new Weiss watch that's fully machined in the US!

Agreed. And I totally love my Runwell with its moon phases in addition to time and date. It's a snazzy piece to wear and a head turner, as well as sturdy, practical, well designed and well made in the USA. I also love my Shinola Bicycle - people are constantly asking me what kind of bike it is, as it turns heads with its beauty and quality. And I love riding it. I have no problem with the price tags. The old adage, "if you have to ask, you can't afford it" might apply here. A bunch of low income people reviewing high end products, a bunch of Walmart shoppers reviewing designer products, doesn't cut it.

Very nice overview. I cannot imagine people spending 500+ USD on a quartz watch that has spelled DETROIT on the dial!? For that kind of money you can get a Swiss made Squale automatic diver or even a solar powered atomic G-Shock/Protrek quartz AND a Seiko automatic!? Kind regards from Amsterdam

Spoken like a European, of course. Could not expect you to value American made, Detroit, etc. I have met Europeans that won't buy and iPhone 7 either, because they can't conceive of walking around with a $1,000 device in their pocket. I can't imagine that kind of small mentality, and it is their loss. You are in Amersterdam, where everyone is too stoned to understand much. We don't expect you to understand DETROIT. You drive teeny little cars, for crying out loud. Or simply ride bikes. So please, your comments on a brand like Shinola are utterly irrelevant in this county.

Shinola is a watch for someone who doesn't know anything about watches and doesn't manage their money. I want to support them, but what the hell do you get for that price other than Sapphire Crystal? You can get a much better watch with Seiko, Hamilton, Tissot, Christopher Ward, etc. The watch isn't even made in U.S. (it's assembled).
@jonathanarneberg673
@jonathanarneberg673 7 жыл бұрын
I love how you so matter-of-fact say that it "isn't even made in the U.S." You know that there is only one watch company in the entire country that can legally put "Made in the USA" on their products, right? Shinola makes their own straps, dials, and a few other watch parts. You know where your Seiko automatic movement was made? Malaysia. They do almost zero manufacturing in Japan these days. You know where all of the components come from in all of your other brands you mentioned? China, besides the 51% movement rule that allows them also to put "Swiss Made" on the dial.

Moment in Time Only assembled in USA Please read this. From Forbes. It’s been a long haul over the past year for the Federal Trade Commission trying to make inroads into the “Made in America” situation as it pertains to Detroit-based Watch Company, Shinola, but it seems the road now comes to an end. The FTC has ruled that Shinola must change its advertising slogan and offer better disclosure about its American-made claims.

I bought a Hamiliton automatic watch and that thing broke down on me within 2 years. I barely wore it and was very dissapointed. Hamiliton said warranty expired and offered to fix it for $450. What a joke. I ended up selling it. I like Shinola's designs and ethos. They also happen to have a lifetime warranty on their watches.

In short. For that price Shinola misses class. Shinola is too round shaped and cases must be more flat. For a nice round shaped watch I would refer to Michel Herbelin's Newport.Then the plates need more design like a LeLocle from Tissot. The colour combinations must be slightly BROKEN white with steel , emerald green and steel, and cobalt blue with steel. They also should offer rectangular watch houses and Cartier like ( Le Must) housings with Roman lettertype numbers and avoid at any price bi colour bracelets cuz they cause trouble. Quality is good but with that look nobody is interested in Belgium. The back of the housing is better than the front. Make also a male and a smaller female watch from every line. I would never spend 1500 euros on the existing Shinola watches. The price for a nice Shinola watch should be about 600 USD. Leather straps are classy. It is a matter of design....

The parts are made from their partner, a Swiss-based watch manufacturer Ronda AG. As for their movements, Shinola is coached by Ronda to assemble the movement "in-house" at Detroit, hence why the movement is renamed from Rhonda to Argonite. So, match the number of the movement. Comparison check www.shinola.com/journal/argonite-705-watch-movement?___store=en_us www.ebay.com/itm/New-Swiss-Ronda-705-Date-6-00-Gold-Plated-Analog-Quartz-Watch-Movement-3-Hands-/281060303367 The price for a Rhonda 705 movement from a UK site sells for a paltry $16 plus shipping.

Anthony Dimaano I had bad luck when I was a young guy with their watches and won't likely go back. They had the numeral 9 fall off a watch 2 months old (dress watch NOT dropped or hit) and the chrono stopped working when they sent it back after repairing. Oh yeah they also put a scratch across the entire case back I could grab with a nail easily. They sent me a new one after I told them but come on, they knew it was there when they sent it back the first time. That and I had one that would only last a year on a battery 3 years in a row and that was them changing it before I had the tools and the want to do it myself. Hope they provide a better product these days. A Fossil was the longest brand I wore as a teen to late twenties.

What is truly most interesting, is that you (despite calling this a 'first impression') are coming from a place of no known deeper knowledge of either watches (Shinola/Filson), nor the exact history behind this (or these) watches. This speaks loudest to me when watching this video, and hearing the lengthy six minutes of what is then just some subjective guessing as you peruse the store as a watch neophyte is kind've ridiculous, if then also too truly considering it as a real product for purchase? If buying for mere looks, or a fashion or impulse buy only, then maybe that would make sense I guess? Under $1,000 for what is involved in these watches is actually (and no I have no vested interest whatsoever here) a steal. Mass manufacturing (by all the other brands listed here by others comments) is pervasive no matter the locale, and this is not the case here, which should be the focus, as the quality reflects that inside and out. Mass production lines - versus the Patek Philippe style watch a month assembly - if Swiss or not are the rule, and these are a wonderful and affordable exception that can also be afforded by the everyman, as a hand assembly (quartz or not) does not come for under $3,000 typically, and if you don't realize that for a petty $600-800 you can enjoy that, and made in the USA, then go buy a Casio or a Timex and leave the uninformed postulating to true watch collectors and aficionados please.

+J Free Welcome to my channel! It appears that you haven't watched any of my other videos on watches or my commentaries on the industry based on your assessment that I'm new to the hobby, which is factually untrue as I have been a collector for a decade, and anyway your claim is not something you could substantiate on the basis of a single video. Your take on Filson, however, is fair enough-- though perhaps as someone who admits they have no vested interest in the brand, your opining on the brand, after being critical of me doing the same, is a bit of the pot calling the kettle black, wouldn't you say? I welcome "serious" watch collectors here (which I take you to be), but for future reference a bit more respectful approach would be appreciated. Thanks, Andrew

As much as I support made in America products, Shinola just seems to be a lot of image over substance. Shinola probably got a tax break to set up an assembly office in Detroit, employed a bunch of white workers from the suburbs to manage it, and then set up this whole funky cool hipster neo-retro-urban marketing campaign all about "community" and nostalgia for the old Detroit, so that they can sell these oversized neo retro looking overpriced watches. Call me cynical, but I think that the whole earnest hipster vibe has been carefully calculated to be cool and make a lot of money on overpriced watches.

The only legitimate criticism I've seen of the watch so far is that its overpriced. But you could say that about MANY watches. Is a Rolex really worth $5,000??? The expression was never derogatory to Shinola, it was aimed at putting down dumbasses, like this reviewer and many of the commenters, who are too stupid to know the difference between shit on your shoe or Shinola shoe polish on your shoe. This reviewer epitomizes the saying. Why should that put you off? I repeat, it never suggested anything bad about Shinola, but was a cultural statement about dumbasses who couldn't see the obvious.

They assemble watches, they assemble bikes, and they rebrand everything else because its made by other companies. The bikes, not made by them, welded by Waterford. Shinola is an excellent design and marketing company, but thats it. I would rather buy things from companies that dont incur those expenses. I can find things I enjoy and need myself with the internet, I dont need hundreds of ads in magazines and popping up on every website to tell me its a great watch made in Detroit, its not.

It's SHINE-ola, not "shin-ola" (not your leg part, but SHINE - as in Shoe Shine!!!) The brand name is the old shoe polish manufacture is SHINE-ola. I have a Shinola bike, and a Shinola watch. STOP mispronouncing it! Go to a Shinola store. Geez, this constant "shin-ola" mispronunciation is annoying as all get out. Also, the guy is prejudiced against the brand to start, and is all gaga about Fossil, which to me was never anything but a cheap watch with a hip design. Faddish, vs. quality. Pay no attention to the man who can't pronounce his brand name - funnily enough giving rise to the old adage, "that guy doesn't know sh*t from Shinola!" By the way, he states he "feels" you are paying for the brand name - as if that's a revelation. Of COURSE you pay for brand names. That's how they get to be high end brands. Gucci, may, in reality, be no better than other well made and designed clothes, but you pay for the brand. Duh. Worthless review.
