"Ship Got Hit By Two Kamikazes." - The Pacific (2010) #shorts #thepacific #movie #scene #ww2 #war
The Pacific is a 2010 American war drama miniseries produced by HBO, Playtone, and DreamWorks that premiered in the United States on March 14, 2010.
The series is a companion piece to the 2001 miniseries Band of Brothers and focuses on the United States Marine Corps's actions in the Pacific Theater of Operations within the wider Pacific War. Whereas Band of Brothers followed the men of Easy Company of the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment through the European Theater, The Pacific centers on the experiences of three Marines (Robert Leckie, Eugene Sledge, and John Basilone) who were in different regiments (1st, 5th, and 7th, respectively) of the 1st Marine Division.

Sledge is reading a letter when a recovered Snafu comes over to talk to him. The letter says that his dog died. Snafu tries to comfort him. Hamm's letter, on the other hand, informs him that his brother was on the Bunker Hill. The Battle of Okinawa in spring 1945 was a pivotal and brutal conflict, intended by the U.S. to secure a base for the eventual invasion of Japan. The U.S. Fifth Fleet faced relentless kamikaze attacks, resulting in significant losses, including the flagship Bunker Hill, which was hit twice in 30 seconds, killing over 350 crew members. The battle showcased intense air-sea combat, with the Japanese deploying thousands of kamikaze pilots in a desperate bid to thwart the U.S. advance. Both sides endured heavy casualties, with an average of 3,000 lives lost daily. The ferocity of the battle and the high toll it took on the U.S. Navy influenced the decision to use atomic bombs to avoid a similar bloodbath in a potential invasion of Japan. The enduring impact of the Okinawa campaign highlighted the devastating human cost of war and the extreme measures taken by both the U.S. and Japan during this final stage of the Pacific War. One person in a comment section mentioned that they knew Snafu in the 1960s. He was an AC repairman who lived in his neighborhood when he was a boy. It could go the other way too. The guy who lived across the street from my grandfather was a European theater vet, and he refused to buy Japanese cars. Meanwhile my grandfather, who helped liberate the Philippines, was sent to Japan as part of the Army of Occupation, visited Hiroshima two weeks after we dropped the bomb, and kept momentos of his Japanese girlfriend until the day he died. I'd say that he never spoke badly of the Japanese, but he never really talked about the war at all.

That was just 2 cities, and it took 2 because they STILL did not surrender after the first one. Even after losing every single battle in the Pacific theater once the Americans *really* got involved. A military coup almost overthrew the Emperor when he finally stamped back to reality and tried to surrender after the second bomb. Operation Downfall would have killed many millions of more people... On ALL sides (Japanese, American, Soviet, etc) than what those 2 bombs did. Even the Japanese propaganda campaign was called "The Glorious Death of 100 Million." Anyone who dares to argue this is either a pseudo-intellectual with no knowledge of how the entirety of WWII was conducted, or possess a maliciously selective bias against the US.

The Character the Rami played is one of the best performaces ive ever seen in a war movie.... His reaction to "my brother was on bunker hill" like he didnt GAF, until he heard that 500 guys died, his expression hearing that 500 guys died from two kamikazes... not many would have been able to go from "sympathy, to F you, to holy f***ing shit" in a 60 second period, like he could...

My dad had an old friend who was a Guadalcanal Marine (My dad was a Korea and Vietnam Vet). They both came to visit me in the early 90s when I was stationed in Camp LeJeune NC. They said they would take me out to eat wherever I wanted. I wasn't thinking and chose a Hibachi Steakhouse. When we got their ole Fritz had a shitfit and started cussing up a storm refusing to go in. After I got out of the Marines, I got a job working for a Japanese company and once again Fritz let me, and my dad know in no uncertain terms what he thought of me working for the Japanese.

Plot twist, the Japanese Emperor was mostly powerless during the war. Hideki Tojo the military leader and prime minister of Japan as well as the oligarchs that formed the Meiji constitution that held power. Emperor Hirohito was personally against the war and was restricted to nothing more than a ceremonial figure head. He was able to force a surrender after the bombs became the public support of the war and Hideki’s government waned. Japan still reveres Hirohito as a Hero.

They ended up nerfing his position so badly that he spent the rest of his life as a token figure, never again endangering anyone and hanging his head low bowing to others. The Japanese were sufficiently humiliated and punished for their transgressions against Americans. It's a shame the same can't be said about their crimes against Asia though.

It's amazing to hear the sheer stupidity of the Americans now who condemn the use of nuclear weapons against Japan. The loss of American and Japanese lives would have been staggering. There was recently a story about the Purple Heart military award and how they are being produced again. The Purple Hearts awarded after WWII were produced for the Invasion of the Japanese Islands. They produced so many that awards for the Korean War, Vietnam War, Grenada, Panama, Somalia, Desert Storm, Kosovo, OEF and OIF were produced during WWII.

Condemning vaporizing hundreds of thousands of civilians isn't really a radical idea. It's not like the US had a good track history for the value of human life and mass slaughter. It's the pot calling the kettle black situation that shows the hypocrisy of people's morals depending on who holds the compass.

"they cant surrender?" Evidently no. Japan is a country of honor, nothing is worst than bring shame to their family names. It took the emperor to announce japan's surrender while military brasses wanted to fight to the bitter end.
@maxducks2001
@maxducks2001 15 күн бұрын
What the Japanese military essentially did was take the dying tradition of Bushido and instill it in EVERYONE. It was twisted into this undying loyalty to the country, no surrender, death before dishonor. Mothers would give knives to their sons to kill themselves if they ever got captured. Combine that with the emperor being seen as a heavenly figure and the head of the military, you have 40K levels of nationalistic zealotry. Normal men know when to surrender, know when to let common sense take over for self-preservation. The Japanese were not normal men.

Racist? In Europe, the Americans were part of the Allied Forces. In the Pacific Theater of War, the Americans (Army, Marines and Navy) bore the brunt of the fighting. After the Battle of Peleliu, the 1st Marine Division lost its combat effectiveness due to the heavy casualties it sustained. It was a brutal campaign against a fanatical enemy that looked at surrender as a shameful act.
