This week we take a look at the Condor Class. Better known as the Maquis Raider. Starting life as a simple utility vessel for colonists, it would become infamous as the primary ship of the Maquis movement. but would it be enough for the Maquis to resist both the might of the Cardassians and Starfleet?

The Condor class is part of a rare club of post-22nd century Humancentric-designed non-Starfleet civilian ships. It is akin to many of the wooden sailed civilian ships of the 15th to 19th centuries that were armed either to defend the ship from pirates or because the ship was crewed by pirates. When the full maritime border of the world was not yet fully known and people went out to settle new lands and make their own fortunes. Now just in space, but with similar results.

I've got a new respect for this ship! Never thought much of it. But it's perfect for light freighters, pirates, colonial defense, fleet screening.... What a workhorse. Neat extrapolation on it. The BoP angle too could be due to the Klingon-Federation Alliance, and BoPs being their own workhorses. Runabouts, Bajoran raiders, Hidekis, BoPs, these, Ravens...they fill that neat little niche.

Believe me everyone has their own likes and dislikes and I respect that but I have liked star trek for entertainment only but hate most everything about it and in quite if I might say "illogical" I look forward more to a new Venom Geek episode more than the ending of discovery. My take on some of the failings of a an unrealistic universe. Starfleet should have branches one for the science, diplomatic and exploration and the other the peacekeeping forces with actual purpose built ships even if their are a small force in reserves. Starfleet ends up at war every few years and due to their non military like mandate its always the civilians who take the first hit, like the "honourable" (glory hunters) boneheads or the cardie war, .....so on. Moral high ground doesn't always save lives, wars will always happen but what do I know I'm not an evolved human. And sending your flagship alone to explore the frontier on its own is insane escorts required especially should the ship be captured by a new hostile empire. these are just a few of my hates about it. If anybody has read this far please I'm not looking for a fight just sharing my opinion and hope all of us fans of VGM98 can respect one another and enjoy his amazing work as a community.

We don't see many civi ships because most of the shows are about the federation with a focus on federation activities. Its not that there are only federation fleet ships, its just that a most of the stories we follow they are not dealing with the day to day civilian stuff. I imagine there are many 1000s of domestic designs and local system ships that are used all over the federation. I mean early TNG shows had domestic ships from worlds on the cusp of joining the federation or were federation members. Condor was a successful semi modular and scalable design that was easy to produce and cost effective. It was an industrial design that could be upgraded into a tactical, like a Toyota truck with weapons mounted on the back.
@OllamhDrab
@OllamhDrab 2 жыл бұрын
It's always been kinda hard to tell just how much capacity the Condor really has, but it's a drawback I suppose of the upscaling process and generally showing at most a cockpit with a little hold beside it. La Sirena, I always figured for being a lot bigger than those, at least in internal volume.

I usually saw the condor as a more of a supply platform for other attacks, sort of in the way that larger fishing boats are used as mobile workshops and fuel stations for pirates in the Red Sea and gulf of Aden. I just think that it would sit just outside of a battle and provide quick rearm’s for peregrine making runs on larger ships I do like the U-wing style one here though, more of a larger heavy hitter with a multitude of uses.

I think people confuse Attack Ships, Raiders and Fighters. Probably because DS9 writers used the term interchangeably with the Jem Hadar bug ship and people don't often discern the different mission profiles. Attack ship: Lighter vessel designed for offensive operations and patrols.Usually carries a heavy armament but lacks all-around fire arcs and endurance for long, independent missions. Often works in concert with heavier ships by attack by assault, whilst heavier vessels support by Attack by fire. Good examples of this are the very efficient tandem of Jem Hadar attack ships paired with Galor Class cruisers. Jem Hadar ships close range and rake the enemy with fire. Galor Class maintains stand-off and Attacks by Fire using its heavy spiral wave cannon. Examples are the Jem Hadar bug ships, Hideki Class, Heavy Bajoran Attack Ship, and when used in fleet actions, the B'rel Class Bird of Prey. Raider: Often very similar to attack ships. Though usually a little heavier. The primary difference is that Raiders have much more endurance for long-range missions and often operate independently of large vessels, usually in small groups, deep behind enemy lines. Examples are light in canon, but the BoP fits this role when operating alone or in packs (seeing a pattern with the BoP, very versatile ship), the Maquis Raider, etc... Fighter: Very light ships, quite small, sometimes not even warp capable with a minimal crew of 1-2. Carry one set of medium weapon or a few torpedoes. Used in fleet actions for direct assaults on enemy ships. No endurance for independent actions without a mother ship. 1 on 1 cannot match even attack ships. Must be used in large groups. Examples: Federation fighter (Peregrine Class?), Scorpion Class, modified runabouts, maybe the shuttle version of the Hideki Class, Bajoran fighters.

The 'Bird of Prey' business just looks like 'parallel evolution' in engineering to me. Clearly its flexibility and aggressive potential gives it a bit of cool factor which most cargo ships wouldn't have. This is the human 'pirate ship' one might say. The Maquis doing more than a little of that, I'm sure.

@@venomgeekmedia9886 Which would bring up the question, how much space do torpedo launchers take? Sure, the Enterprise-D (at launch) had a 30 meter launch tube- are we presuming that: 1) That is the minimum length for a launch tube for standard (2.1 meter) torpedoes? 2) That launcher tech hasn't advanced in some way, shrinking the necessary length of the tube? 3) Are all (Federation) torpedoes the same 'caliber'? (Not talking about the runabouts Microtorpedoes, which were like 13-ish centimeters- but could there be 1.5 meter torps, 1.2 meter torps- which, presumably, would reduce necessary tube length) Admittedly, I think the biggest problem wouldn't be the launch tube but the carrying capacity... probably didn't have much space for a bunch of torps. And let's be honest, inconsistency in Star Trek- INCONCEIVABLE, I know. But I think it could work out that the Peregrine would have torpedo launchers (likely at a smaller caliber than a capital ship). Its explicitly an attack fighter- you'd think they'd want it to get as much done as it could.

Given how large some of these "Fighters" are, I don't think it's appropriate to categorize them as fighters. The fact that you have such a large cargo hold that you can walk into kind precludes them from being a fighter IMO. You only need to look at the dimensions of modern Aircraft to understand what makes a "Fighter". Given the size & volume, I think these would be better categorized as FAC (Fast Attack Crafts), or in WW2 parlance: Torpedo Boats. Venom Geek Media, can you do a accurate side-by-side proper size comparison of these so-called Star Trek "Fighters" vs Star Wars "Fighters" alongside IRL "Fighter Craft" from modern day military? You can even throw in WW2 fighters for scale.

Isnt there a type called the yeager class where its a frankenstein mash up with the rear of this ship and the front part of an intrepid class. Now that is ugly.

It definitely isn't a kitbash. But it is a little rough around the edges.

Going to disagree with you on the Torpedoes on the Peregin. The Torps do have a set of hefty thrusters on them that will give them a good amount of speed in addition to the launch ships speed. It be similar to how real life missiles work from fighters. Not to mention this be type of deal where you want to salvo off the Trops and GTFO like real life torpedo/Antiship missile planes tactics. Now I can see the Launchers allowing Warp firing and attacks. Which is always handy

Depends on the kind of missiles. Anti ship missiles are often sub-sonic and can be shot down whereas kinetic shells cannot. So there is the difference. The launcher serves to accelerate the torpedo to the target, minimising evasion time.

@@venomgeekmedia9886 Um boss? I am a Former USA Artillery Radar Firefinding. I use to shot down incoming shells all day long. Its easiler to do cause the Shell cant evade like even the cheapest ASHM can. Not to mention you can shove a ECM system in the missile. The newer ones even have Flares and Chaff launchers, in addition to jammers and evasion protocals.

fascinating. so you could take out a shell in flight? i know missiles have gotten better and there are supersonic attack missiles now. so are we better off using missiles over 'dumb' rounds even considering cost?

@@venomgeekmedia9886 Yup, Look up C-RAM videos (Counter Rocket Artillery Mortar) or the Israeli Iron Dome Videos on KZfaq. You will find several videos of it happening. And the US Military has done several... Hundred Cost assentments on this cause Congress always gets sticker price shock. Basically it boils down to. Will you rather spend 10K on several dumb bombs to take out the target or spend one 8k smart bomb to do it? Simply more efficient just to yeet one and call it a day. Guided weapons are simple more effeicent. Today a F18 can take out 5 different targets if its set up right, barely 30 years back you need 4 F18s PER TARGET to do it. There is a reason why the US Military is trying its best to go to an all PGM force. We Got lords knows number of different missiles, as many guided bombs, the Army has 2 guided shells and even a new kit that allows the average grunt to turn a standard 155mm Arty shell into a guided one by screwing it in the fuse hole. Not to mention a guided weapon is safer for the pilot. You can stand off from the target, say a Galor at 10k Km, and fire the weapon and run away while the Galor panics shots at the torpedo and not you. Handy that. And far safer for the noncombatiats. You can ENSURE that the Bad Guys hold out gets deleted while the next door school they were using as an hostage does not get touch. Or during support of infantry*, you can put the bomb EXCALTY where you want it and not have to worry about something like wind blowing the thing onto your guys, which has happened ALOT with dumb weapons. Still does with smart cause of human error, but its far harder to do so far far rarer. But there is a few usage case for dumb weapons. Mainly in the type of F THAT ENTIRE AREA UP role of carpet bombing. So Yeah, smart weapons are well worth their cost. *Speaking of Inflanty. @@venomgeekmedia9886 , A fever dream of a man who actively hates real Star Trek. An invention of execs who want to squeeze an IP for every penny they can, even if it doesn't make sense. The show "Picard" doesn't exist. Jean-Luc Picard isn't an idiot, as portrayed in the show. 7 of 9 isn't a mass murderer, all her progress was not erased. Icheb and Hugh were not murdered for shockingly dumb reasons. And how do I know for sure? Do they ever put a retired captain in charge of an entire fleet? A fleet that is the only thing between the Federation and total war with the Romulans? Or, would this be more akin to a dream? Does it make any sense? Can you "Clone" Data from a single positronic neuron? Would this "Clone" have all of Data's memories? If so, what were the other neurons in his positronic brain for? What was their purpose? Why not just have one neuron if it can do everything a full brain can do? "Picard" was a dumb dream. Dreamt by greedy businessmen in the early 21st century. Nothing more.
