It's called chiburi, and that specific kind of chiburi with the flip and knock is called kaiten chiburi. There's other variations. It's mostly about zanshin, which is just the idea of shaking off that you just killed somebody and getting ready for the next attack. I too assumed it was about swinging/banging off the blood, but others (including the skilled KZfaqr Shogo) agree with you, that it's more likely to check the mekugi - if it breaks, the sword is useless. Having served in the military, I can understand that fear.

In medieval times there were habits that might seem gay, like when knights were making their vows to their senior they had to kiss him on the mouth, when travellers would arrive in the monastery to stay for the night they had to kiss the highest priest on the mouth. These were supposed to be signs of sincerity and honesty, there was no sexual undertones though.
