Shot Placement for long range hunting, How to get that instant and humane kill we all strive for! Slow motion footage of heart shots, Lung shots and the brilliant shoulder shot. Long range hunting requires a bit more thought to get the shock transfer needed to anchor game on the spot as the bullet loses its energy. Soft bullet construction is needed at low impact velocities to create large wound channels to get the job done quickly. A leading expert in this is Nathan Foster. Well worth checking out his books and knowledge base online www.ballisticstudies.com.

I remember watching a deer and deer hunting video all about the shoulder shot. In that particular video they said that there is a bundle of nerves that comes off of the neck and merges onto the shoulder blade. So when a bullet impacts the shoulder that bundle of nerve sends a shock wave to the brain and kills the deer instantly. Great video!
@ChasetheWildNZ
@ChasetheWildNZ Жыл бұрын
Yeah that's pretty much it.. I think the shock puts the deer unconscious and then the massive internal damage causes the blood loss that actually causes the death. Hopefully within the time it's unconscious for. The same shock is caused when you hit spine but then they wake up and can drag themselves off

I agree with the shoulder shot, I've dropped a few that way and it's definitely ethical. However, mostly we're hunting for meat and filling the freezer, so behind the shoulder would mean I save a proper amount of meat. Headshots do it even better! Cheers from South Africa!

Important information. Often not talked about enough. It’s a common theme to aim behind the shoulder rather than the point of the shoulder. Even a lot of scope advertisements have the crosshair behind the shoulder and low ( a heart shot with very little room for error). I totally agree with you that the point of the shoulder is better. It’s depends on calibre, target size, bullet construction and velocity but as a rule for me , break the point of the shoulder and the animal goes nowhere. The point is to break the shoulder and make use of the shock delivery. This usually causes damage to both the heart and lungs, rather than one or the other. Of course all these shots are very effective but as you say as hunters, if we can do better we should. Thanks great video keep them coming 👍👍.
@ChasetheWildNZ
@ChasetheWildNZ 2 жыл бұрын
Exactly Tom! Causing huge damage to the heart and lungs and the connection between the two can cause such a loss of blood pressure the animal goes into an instant coma and dies before it's recovered it's senses. That's if the shock delivery doesn't do that instantly

Great video and I found it very informative. It just so happens I was sitting at the table setting up to do some reloading and had my PC on it too. I saw your video and watched it 😃. It confirmed my choice of bullet. I use the 90gr ELD-X in 243, but I limit myself to ranges of 300yds. The load I have at the moment gives me 3100fps at the muzzle. I haven't shot that many animals so far all at ranges less than 100yds. I was a black powder muzzle loading hunter, but found getting in close now I'm nearly 70 hard. So converted to centrefire and enjoying the change. Keep up with these good videos.

Thank you for the reply to my last comment, always good to get some reasurance from a more experience shooter/hunter. I now have a load which is good for 400yds. I did try 500yds, but while still on the steel gong, the group grew quite a bit. so, 400Yds will be my limit. I would be interested in hearing about your thoughts on neck shots! Better still see some done please............Cheers.

I have a few on video I think. I think they are good if you can accurately hit the spine in an animal without too much meat and muscle around it. The initial shock nearly always drops them but if you don't sever the spine or destroy the blood going to the brain then they can get up and run or will be half paralized and need a finisher. I prefer to hit areas where there are lots of vitals like straight through the shoulder.

Excellent video? The more credentialed one is on the topic of long range shooting the more those credentials prove this video is far from excellence in any manner. Fact is since shot placement is paramount the knowledge and skills of how to hit where aimed becomes paramount too yet the marksmanship skills needed to hit at long range was not at all addressed in this video.

“Wounding is vast, death comes quickly, but we can do better” yes yes yes. It is so hard to get people to realize this and put it into practice. They’d rather argue about how what they do has been working for (20-40 years) and how Im the unethical one for using “non-hunting match” bullets and shooting over 100 yards because “if you cant get within 100 yards you are a terrible hunter”
@ChasetheWildNZ

Yes you do hear exactly that a lot! The traditional shot in placements and especially normal hunting bullets with a lead soft point just won't cut it for longer ranges as the bullet slows down.

As a hunter, I want the animal to go down quickly. 2 reasons. 1st is that I don't feel the animal should suffer. 2nd is that It is much easier to find the animal in thick forest and underbrush when they drop right where they were shot. For my .308 I use Hornady American Whitetail. It is a bonded type bullet (Interlock SP) and has dropped 250lb (113.4kg) whitetail deer right where they stood. However I do not use this round past 300yrds. Primarily because the rifle I am using for .308 is my budget rifle I bought as my first rifle. It is a good rifle (Savage model 10) but it is not built as a precision rifle so I choose not to use it past 300. I am currently building a precision 300 PRC for longer range hunting. I've been debating between the ELD-M and ELD-X. From the looks of your video it seems the higher BC Match bullet perform perfectly well for hunting.
@ChasetheWildNZ
@ChasetheWildNZ 2 жыл бұрын
They perform very well... If you encounter a hard high resistance target close up I'd recommend going for a softer area like lungs or neck to avoid surface bullet blow up if pushing the lighter variants (140gr and below) very fast.

I have used Hornady A-Max before in cal. 264 140 gr 2840 fps, they worked perfect, I can no longer buy them so have switched to Hornady ELD M 140 cal. 264 2725 fps they work ok, but not always with the desired effect, think maybe a little more speed is needed, have you tried cal 264 ELD M
@ChasetheWildNZ
@ChasetheWildNZ Жыл бұрын
Yeah they are great bullets also. Very very similar to the Amax so yes maybe for your animal size a bit more speed would be helpful. The 2750-2850 zone if very useable for the lighter bullets like the 140 as too much faster and they can blow up a little on the surface of a hard tough animal if your up very close. In these circumstances I'd aim for a lung shot to get good penetration and damage (e.g a close up hog or large red deer/elk) I hope this helps

Out of the rem mag the 180gr has enough weight to do some huge wounding up close with signs of surface blow up on hard targets like boar shields etc but the weight allows great wounding dispute this. Smaller projectiles I tend to aim for a softer area is pushing them very fast 2850fps and faster and up close. Lung shots work great but avoid boar shoulders or angles where big penetration is needed

Great vid thank you. Quick question: why does a shoulder shot kill quicker than a lung or heart shot?
@ChasetheWildNZ
@ChasetheWildNZ Жыл бұрын
The shoulder provides a way for the impact shock to travel up to the spine and cause unconsciousness or coma. Then the area also belongs to the connection between the heart and lungs which is full or arteries etc and when damaged is obviously fatal. The animal then dies quickly while.its unconscious. To us this looks like an instant kill. The lung shot or heart is also fatal but the lack of shock transfer means they can run and often get 100m or more before dieing. Not ideal is bushy country

What ranges are common for you? If within 200m then a standard soft point type go pretty damn well. If our further then the 150gr SST (still available in factory ammo by fiocchi) the eldm I'd suggest going heavier as they are soft and up close you want the weight and slower speed to get enough penetration through a big boar shield. A 168gr ELDm is ideal in a 308 in my opinion. Itl handle anything up close and then still easily expand and cause great wounding out to 600-700m

I see the value of the ELD-M here after reading about it on your Knowledgebase site. I am a reloader using a 7mm-08 so am a candidate for the 162g projie. Are you using AR 2209 and if so how many grains? I’m not a long range shooter preferring 230 metres or less with my limited VX 3i variable scope and my skill level. Any thoughts on this projectile at shorter ranges? What scopes are you using for longer ranges?

The knowledge base etc from www.ballisticstudies.com is Nathan fosters. I'm very glad I can represent his work and study as he is a very knowledgeable man and I've learnt most of what I know from his books. The 7mm08 is best used with Varget with the 162s and works very well up close due to a slow muzzle velocity. This was my hunting set up for many many animals at all ranges. The smaller 139gr and above eldx is also very good for smaller animals like fallow deer. Scopes wise. Anything that gives you quality glass and repeatable dialling will work well. I use a lot of element optics scopes and find them very good value

With a range finder scope all set up for that rifle and ammo long range hits shouldn’t be a problem. I have used regular Leupold 4x12 and 3x9 scopes for years. One on an ar15 using 75 grain Hornady and on a Remington 700 .270 using 130 grain Berger hand loads. I practice to 750 yards with both and have killed many coyotes at 500+ yards. Hitting a coyote face on at over 400 yards is is quite a challenge. You have to have a sub moa weapon. It’s about the shooter a lot. It doesn’t require a $3000+ rifle and a $3000 scope to kill. It’s great some can afford such equipment and have a blast with it.

The government spends millions culling and sadly poisoning many millions of animals each year to keep them in check. At least the hunters do try and use what we can

What do you think about tikka ctr for long range hunting?Does it have required accuracy?Some youtube reviews claim 0.4 moa using premium factory ammo like eld m.Please answer😢.
@ChasetheWildNZ
@ChasetheWildNZ 5 ай бұрын
Yes they are a great option. The tikka rifles are all capable of the accuracy needed for this. The CTR is a good option if you don't mind the weight. This does make them easier to shot but with good technique the standard tikka lite can also do the job.

@mladenkrsmanovic5814 I'd say they should be very similar. Every gun will.like different ammo slightly different. The best modification for accuracy is to bed the action into the stock. This will make a very reliable system for years to come. Give www.ballisticstudies.com a read. Nathan who runs it is amazing with shooting technique and accurising guns. His books are very easy to understand and taught me most of what I know

Shot placement important indeed. Any vids of the ones you miss or wounded shooting from long range? Happens a lot due to margin or error only showing ones you hit isn’t realistic. Hunting is to stalk in so the animal can actually detect you at least then clean shot.
@ChasetheWildNZ
@ChasetheWildNZ 2 жыл бұрын
We can take over 1000 feral animals a year of public and private land and we have found that doing at medium/long range is the best way to get clean ethical kills. I have seen more wounded animals and lost game when sneaking in close. The difference could be that we are trying to take more than one animal at a time and when your in close they run instantly and cause rushed shots. Out a bit further you are under no pressure and the animals are relaxed and you wait for your moment. If you take the animal closest to you from the group, sometimes the others don't even realise what's happened. I also bow hunt so I know all about getting in close but it's a unique situation here where ever mammal is an introduced pest. The government cull and poison constantly to keep numbers semi in check.

@ChasetheWildNZ
@ChasetheWildNZ Жыл бұрын
I sight mine in at 100m and have it 1 inch high so effectively a 200m zero or close to it with the rem mag and 6mm CM. The more important thing is to have a tried and tested ballistic app or drop chart to be get it right in the field. Certainly have found you need to tune most ballistic apps to suit your setup and have a few BCs inputted to get the curve right.

Here in NZ all mammals are introduced and have no predators so numbers get out of control very quickly. If people don't hunt them the government ends up poisoning them or killing them from helicopters and leaving them to waste. Much better that we hunt them and use them to feed our family and friends.

@@ChasetheWildNZ Yes!.. According to internet, same experienced with the State of Texas, USA... Such state suffered massive swine infestation, for those wild- introduced swine variety, many years ago... They have no natural predator, so their population increased wildly!.. They devoured the planted crops of every community- within the foraging range of the said swine hordes... Those concerned, they hired and paid hunters, using 4. wheels vehicle or even helicopter- just to keep in check those frequent devourer of their crops... With kills by the hundreds per day sometimes, they build a "cannery plants" to pack those free roaming, abundant meat source animals... And extra income in disguised, theyre exporting the yummy canned meat for good!...
