@@ChasetheWildNZ Wow, fast reply. I do something similar in Scotland, but when its horizontal rain one just has to open one's mouth. Where there is Sphagnum Moss there is water. Because there is always something dead it seems above in the burn. I carry a Grayl water purification press now. I think the 7mm Rem Mag is a superb hunting round; a "modern" .270. There maybe something on paper better, but it still ends up with the bod behind the trigger. What wind lift were you getting from the mountain side, or were conditions favourable? I love the time you give to getting set up correctly for the shot, time well spent.

@@muskett4108 i definitely take care to get the shot perfect. You have so much time at longer ranges so the animal is calm. The weather was pretty good and we had a bit of windage.. about 1moa is all with the slippery 180gr eldms. Personally I don't buy into the updraft idea. I've never adjusted height for wind even out very long.

@@ChasetheWildNZ I takes one good shot, so make it good. Interesting you understand the concept of updraft. Its probably possible, but rare and would need higher wind speeds. A good BC bullet negates a good bit of such effects. Other factors have more influence to making a good shot of it all, like not setting up a stable platform to shoot from. (For me its: that left elbow need a home and not floating about. Not always so easy on a cliff face!) It was lovely to see such good marksmanship in such a spectacular setting. Thank you.

@@muskett4108 mountain shooting sure does test your technique! I find holding my left hand over the scope with gentle pressure helps the recoil to be consistently controlled when using a bipod. I see a lot of ppl going high when shooting of hard surfaces or up and down hill because of technique rather than angle etc. Sure I think updraft is a concept that makes a difference.. just not enough to worry about with the scope adjustments. If you hang a bullet from a string.. it's very easy to blow it left and right. Your not guna be able to blow it up against gravity do you can't just use a normal 10mph wind hold for example and turn it vertical to suit a 10moh updraft

@ChasetheWildNZ
@ChasetheWildNZ Жыл бұрын
You are too kind. Yeah the odd one I get the wind wrong. I practise and also compete in long range and PRS style shoots here so I know my gear pretty well. The idea behind using a powerful cartridge and a soft expanding bullet like the Eld-m is so that they still kill humanely on your worst shot. Not just the perfect shots. Another tip is to wait until the animal feeds into the wind. That way your wind hold is off the front of the animal and there is lots of decent kill zones before the gut shot. I don't like holding into the hind quarters or the gut just incase the wind dies down.

Hey mate. 26" barrel with h1000 or 2217. Yup I always use the hand over scope technique or my pack when I can. What are the regulations if you just injury the game in NZ? We have to do 24 hours of searching before starting a new hunt here, and need to have a certified blood trail tracking dog on call at any time. Is it similar in NZ, or more relaxed? Asking because long range shooting always have some risks.
@ChasetheWildNZ
@ChasetheWildNZ 10 ай бұрын
Good question, there are no regulations, hunting seasons or limits as every mamma is introduced and is considered a pest. The government kills millions of animals every year with poison, traps and even helicopter culling teams and I know they don't get it right every shot! However with the numbers required for population control I can confidently say that with medium range 500m and in, I see far less injury than when you get up close and under pressure. Also a follow up shot at medium range is far easier in the hills. Think how much of a hillside you can see from further back than when you are close and amongst the bushes

@@ChasetheWildNZ A very different world from Norway then. Game is quite scarce in areas here and hunting very regulated. All new hunters are taught during their mandatory training to do lung shots at no more than 100 meters. Annual shooting exam is also done at 100 meters and the score to pass is 5 rounds within a 25cm circle on a caribou silhouette centered just behind the front leg. Test is done in any position without supports like bipods, tripods, backpacks, bags or other. Most default to a prone freehand position. Very different from what you are doing in these videos. We also bring the whole animal with us back to roads or boats, and process the whole of it. Minced meat, different cuts of steaks, casseroles. Hunting is a lot of very hard work in our terrain that is similar to yours :-) It is quite thought provoking to learn what others are doing. We let a red deer with a calf pass at 230m just this weekend as neither of the two of us felt comfortable taking the shot. (poor preparation, expected the deer at 80m so no position built or gear in place. Both of us ex-mil (and both saying the same afterwards: If this was war, we would have fired as wounding is often better than dispatching in that situation). I also have a place with ranges up to 300m where the red deer migrate through. I feel that my 308w might be a bit at its limit there but more research needed. Enjoying your videos now with the right motivation to learn and improve my game. :-)

@rolfnilsen6385 it sounds very different but also a great, pure way to be. The romance of hunting this way is how it should be, however here there are too many introduced species and if hunters don't take lots of numbers then the bush suffers and the government end up poisoning and it is all wasted. As for confidence with the 308. It is more than capable out long. Especially if you use the Hornady sst or eldx round. What a beast of a set-up! The 180gr would do great on elk as long as you understand it's limitations. Further than say 300y it's going to work fantastic with a good shoulder shot or lung. Up real close I'd stick to a lung shot as the target is softer and your more likely to get decent penetration and no surface blowup.(even so the big 180 fragment's kill well) it will perform very well on game right down to impact velocities of a safe 1600fps so in your set-up.. that's a loooonnnggg way. Possibly if limited to shooting on foot. The records would need checking to verify tallies. Pre venison recovery, skin export tallies + Government culling (minus skins recovered by cullers). Game processing facility purchase tallies for the period subsequent. Plus an estimate for those shot by recreational hunters (accurate information from this group is impossible, many do not cooperate). Cullers rapidly embraced the more modern calibres when they became available, and ammo was supplied for .308, .270 & .222 by the NZ Forest Service (who managed culling). Aerial shooting for game meat recovery for the majority of its' time has used .308. And when a few cullers and 0 rec hunters shot 100 animals on their very best days, about 4 shot over 2000 for a season, the comparisons are stark. About 30000 tahr were shot in a few short winters (deer were chased the rest of the year). Squadrons of helicopters shot and recovered 50-100 deer a day for years. The statistics should tell the story, and the .303 will be up there with the leaders.

@@ChasetheWildNZ Having an environment over-run by browsing introduced pests has caused conflict and major ecological damage. To wish for that to gratify hunting desires is a narrow perspective. The recreational hunting lobby and those responsible for pest control plans (like the tahr plan) have succeeded in enabling that species to proliferate to possibly its' highest ever number in NZ (personal thought is the DOC population estimates are low, possibly significantly, but this is subjective being unfamiliar with actual current survey detail). High numbers are not healthy. And it seems they are at their highest level for most species since the 1960s, plus more widespread. When the National Parks alpine herbfields are a mass of flowers as is historically recorded some protection values will have been achieved. The idea of keeping pest numbers very low in some select sites, while at other places higher populations would be tolerated was tried with the tahr plan management units. Its' management and the lobby influences scuttled what is probably a reasonable concept.

Gday. We actually took heaps of meat of each animal but yes its quite different from taking the animal out whole and utilising everything. I will add that here in NZ it is quite different from any other country, every mammal is introduced and we have no predators so numbers go up steadily and need control to preserve our native plants and animals. The government spend millions poisoning and culling many animals, including Tahr. I think they shot and killed 20,000 Tahr last year from helicopters and left them to rot. The shear amount of animals needed to control them mean they are often wasted. In this case the owner wanted the females controlled and while I did that we took as much meat as we could carry and the odd skin. However it's just not possible to use every animal in these cases without air support!
