Shou Sugi Ban is an ancient Japanese technique using a form of primitive technology to preserve wood through burning.
Well, the roof on the off grid log cabin is done, and it's not metal or cedar shakes like we all discussed. See how I burned the boards by watching this video after the current one • Traditional Japanese W...
It's wood plank, hardened with flame in the Japanese style of shou sugi ban, an ancient technique of preserving wood for construction. It makes the wood water, weather, insect, UV and burn resistant, perfect for the roof of this log cabin in the woods.
There are building in Japan that have been standing for centuries due to the use of this durable wood construction material, know as shou sugi ban.
At the end of the video, I continue with my self reflections, this time talking about passion and how important it is to a happy and successful life.

Shawn I have to say brother we are cut from the same cloth, at least on the outdoors, self reliant front. I had 12.5 acres in the north backwoods of Maine with a log cabin that my wife and I lived in for a year. It was my heaven on earth until mental illness finally took my wife away from me. My property had to be sold and God brought me back to Washington to take care of my dad as he is aging. I thank God for his wisdom of things we don't understand and am honored to be able to care for my dad in his last years since I didn't see him much when I was a child, and he was my moms 24/7 caregiver for the last 7 years of her life as she battled breast cancer and severe R A. Thank you for giving me someone to relate to and kinda live vicariously through until God possibly grants me the privilege to go back to the mountains and build my cabin which has always been my dream since I was a small child. Wish we were closer brother I think we would be great friends. Keep doing what your doing and don't forget to thank God for your blessings. Peace and Happiness to you brother!

Thank- you for bringing mental health to the for ground. So many people brush it aside and say she passed from something else. I am so sorry that you lost your beautiful wife, someday this illness will be a thing of the past , but only by talking about it.Thank-you for caring for your parents now, I know at times it can get you down, but they took care of us not so long ago. I wish you well and hope you can reconnect with the outdoors again, if you have not already !!God Bless You ! Jason Harmon !!

I think we are sorta each others keeper's and we inspire each other and make like more rewarding if we care from the heart. I did the same as you, took care of my granny and then my mother, and last my precious brother but I feel blessed to have been able to do it....God bless you and keep on you will be blessed

Clearly you have endured great pain and suffering through these tragic losses, yet your steadfast faith in Him has helped you adapt and overcome as best as you can. And good on you for maintaining such a loving and caring demeanor man, especially when it comes to honoring and taking such deep and devout care for your parents as you have... For this there is no doubt that God will pour His blessings unto you and have His angels closely watching out for your safety well-being. But best and most rewarding of all is knowing that your name will be in His Book of Eternal Life! God bless you and yours my friend

I can relate with your feeling. I see myself the same way. In fact, I learned English because I felt fascinated with the language. I worked so hard to master it, I later became a long time English teacher and like you, I didn't go to college. Seeing you work on your cabin feels me with that thing I felt many years ago towards English. I'm now an immigrant in my mother-in-law's country, Spain. A new beginning at 43 years of age. It will take time but hopefully, I'll get there. I hope you continue building things after you're done with your cabin. I really enjoy your videos.

I agree 100% about finding a pursuit that you literally can’t imagine living without. I found mine by accident while living in Vancouver in the late 70’s. A friend challenged me to try archery with him at a local community centre. I was hooked from that first lesson. I read everything I could find concerning the history, types of bows, technique, everything. I joined a local club, asked questions, started going to tournaments, and upgrading my equipment. I gravitated towards Olympic style archery, using recurve bows, sights, and stabilizer weights. I quit my job in April so I could practice 4-8 hours a day for thee summer outdoor season. I found my passion could also be my profession by making custom compound bows for an individuals personal specifications. No need to advertise, as my work, and word of mouth kept me busy with all the work I could handle. Eventually, all my friends were archers who understood the depth of my passion too. I could care less when someone from my past told me I was wasting my time, or had lost my mind. I was only making half the money I had made before discovering archery. I was forced to retire after 10 of the happiest years of my life due to a shoulder injury to my bow arm caused by a drunk driver running a red light, and t-boning me in the drivers door. Life goes on, and I’ve since discovered 10 meter Olympic airgun target shooting. I’m nowhere near as fanatical about it, but it has filled the empty hole left in my sole from having to give up archery. I would challenge everyone to search their own sole, and pursue the thing that makes you happy to jump out of bed, and begin a new day perusing that which you need to make your life full. Forget about the rat race to acquire the latest, and newest fads.Your just being sold snake oil that make others rich. Good luck to you and your wife with your future projects. You are truly a gifted carpenter, yet you still know there is something new to learn each day. What better way to live a fulfilling, happy life.

I dont see how anyone could complain as to what you have done with your roof ? I am so amazed to watch as you build your own cabin by hand and by yourself. you have to have a pure sense of joy when you stand back at the end of the day and look at what you have done ? Dedication to this wonderful cabin that could be standing here long since you are gone .....incredibly admirable of your work .

Shawn: Custom garden shed kits I designed; were exported to Japan about 35 years ago. They had the ridge caped with a 6" round log that had a 90 degree notch cut 2/3 of the way into it the full length. It was a good looking ridge cap, but we used forest green exterior vinyl sheet goods for the roof cover as it was a kit building; 3x4 meters, with a 12:12 pitch roof. They were partially assembled and flat packed for shipment in a container. The walls were panels of milled 4" lodge pole pine rounds ( normally used for tree stakes) cut in half then milled smooth with bevels on the flat, T&G edges and the rough 1/2 round for the exterior. I believe a lot of the kits were used for forest cabins/shelters. Bert

Hi shawn, I was born with a handful of disabilities, and do to that my own father never taught me many of the skills I feel that I should've learned. Much of the things I wish I had learned had to do with forestry, fishing, and self reliance. I want to thank you for these videos, because I feel I've found something of a 'virtual mentor' in you. Currently I've had a lot going on between struggling with my weight, dealing with toxic family members, and money trouble, and I feel that much of your commentary in this video helps drive me to want to be a better man. I'm currently working on as much self reliance as is possible and I just wanted you to know that I love your videos, and wish that there was a man like you in my early childhood to give me the kick in the balls I needed to learn to be a man. Thanks, peace.

That looks awesome, I can't wait to see how that weathers and holds up over time. Super creative and thanks for challenging the typical thinking I can certainly fall into with the best of them. Super cool. Love the message about passion too - again you are spot on right with your reflections and it's so good to hear these messages out loud. Thank you.

Love your videos Shawn! They have taught me so much by just watching and listening to you. Thank you! As a business owner it’s very difficult to find time to do more of the things I’m passionate about. I’ve recently started taking Fridays off to give myself three-day weekends, which has greatly reduced stress and has allowed me to get out to the beach more, go shooting and simply have some ‘me’ time. I’ve been prepping for a few years now to allow my family and I to be self reliant in the event the shit hits the fan. It’s a great feeling to know that we have plans and all the supplies in place. I look forward to learning more... Keep up the great work!
