Great video. You make some solid arguments. I especially appreciated your perspective on how some try to fix through trial and error. I see that when someone DIY their own spring replacement.

Another consideration is the ability to use ladders or footstools safely and have balance. Garages can be obstacle courses full of things in the way, but even if they are empty it can be akward to stand on a ladder and twist around to get the right angle in a tight corner. People that don't have proper footstools or ladders, or cannot safely use them, should avoid DIY with garage doors. And if you are older or a bit out of shape, have somebody around, just in case you do fall, and need help. Just a thought. I did a repair this morning on my Landlords garage door which he ran into with his truck. He knocked the tracks out of the wall, some of the wheels out of the track, the cable was wrapped around the wrong side of the track and really stuck and trapped. The electric eyes bent out of the way on one side, and several lower panels badly bent including the bottom rail. I have never done garage door work. But I have ladder work, metal fabrication work, some basic construction trades, and I have my own tools. So I did a little research online about the scary springs, and then sorted it all out, by picking an order of attack that was safe and made sense. Got it all together secured, sorted out some tuning to make it operate properly, and then finally lubricated everything and patched a few holes in the fabric with metal tape. It was very rewarding and saved my landlord, probably several thousand dollars, and it only took me a few hours. Since I'm 60 and haven't been doing construction since I was in my 30's, my main concern was ladder safety, but fortunately my muscle memory was pretty good with that, and my balance was too. All that walking lately paid off.

i Really Appreciate your knowledge and videos, my wife bumped the garage door on lowest panel and i live in AK, where its like idk -40 and so the little dent lets cold air in and what not i want to replace the panel and retighten the lift motor track tension. with your 4 tips video and roller drum alignment it has allowed me to understand where the stored energy is and how to make adjustments or repairs without loosing my shirt or eye or finger lol. i have a question tho, do you have any reccomendations on how to keep my rubber seal at the bottom of my garage door from freezing and making the whole system 'jump' when we open the door? the only fix i have is manually disengaging the door lifting it by hand and then using the remote thank you!

When examining the torsion spring whch has been previiously mounted on the torsion bar. How can you quickly deternine whether the spring is under tension or not under tension?
