I have 3 Chinese carbon MTB frames built up so far, and i have plans for a 4th bike. I beat my bikes in Colorado, Moab, and lots of other places with no frame problems at all. I've never paid more than $700 USD for a carbon frame.

I purchased an Iplay 156 (A knockoff scott spark 27.5 with more travel) all the way back in 2014 and rode it for a year. It was sold, no issues with the actual carbon, but the hardware it came with was all made of butter and needed to be replaced. I work at a shop so it wasn't hard for me to measure, although sourcing was slightly harder. Someone might struggle a lot sorting these issues out, and at least for me the frame was a little un-rideable with the stock hardware.

Hi David. I just recently ordered my third Chinese carbon frame. I'm a fairly heavy rider (240 lbs ride weight) and have put over 3,500 miles on my two year old Chinese carbon full suspension frame. I'm routinely doing tons of rocks and roots, 2-3 foot drops to flat and some small jumps. In that time, I've sheared one hollow alloy pivot bolt, which they quickly replaced under warranty. I snapped one derailleur hanger, which I had purchased extras of ahead of time. I also replaced the frame bearings with SKF bearings, paying out of pocket. Otherwise, the frame has been flawless. Its got plenty of scrapes and scratches, some fairly deep, but no signs of cracking, delaminating or bubbling in any way. A thread together BB92 bracket went a long way towards keeping the bike quiet. My frame has internal cable routing, but no built in cable tubing, so it does suffer from some cable slap over rough terrain, though plenty of name brand bikes suffer the same. My bike arrived with a flawless matte black finish. A buddy who ordered the same frame off eBay received one with some visual defects where you can see the layup seams, but is still functionally perfect. Just something to keep in mind, as the absolute cheapest available retailers may cut some corners in terms of finish. But over all, I have been very happy with my current two frames, and I am eagerly awaiting my new one. I've also had great luck with Chinese carbon rims. However I have managed to break a pair of $12 carbon handlebars with a "stomp test". Better to break the bars underfoot in my garage than out on the trail with my face. For now, I'm sticking to name brand carbon handlebars. Also, it's worth noting that Chinese factories may be affected by the current coronavirus outbreak. Between the lunar new year, and the coronavirus scare, factory direct sellers seem to be slower than usual to respond. You may want to figure that into your review.

Thanks for such an informative reply! Sounds like you’ve had a really good experience. I’ve not yet had a reply, presumably because of the current issues. Curious if this will start to impact supplies of bikes and components for the big bike brands?
@anthonysturchio1076
@anthonysturchio1076 4 жыл бұрын
@@davidarthur I have, thanks. As you alluded to in your video, there's plenty of reviews on some of the more popular MTB sites. You showed some in your video. It seems sticking with the more popular Chinese brands is your best bet. The frame may be available through many sellers, but the bigger and more popular brands seem to have the better QC, better communication, and better handling of any warranty issues. At some point I'm sure it could potentially hurt the big brands. However their supply chain has already anticipated the month long holiday, and the orders are likely in such high numbers that they can weather this bump in the road without much pain. They probably have frames already waiting to ship at the factory. Frames already loaded on a container ship. Frames already in the distributor's warehouse. Without being over there, its hard to get a good temperature reading, but I suspect employee absenteeism and shuttered factories are starting to wear thin on corporate management as well as politicians. Hopefully they can devise a plan to offer reasonable safety and protection for workers while still allowing them to get back to business as usual. I would hate to see anyone put at risk, but bringing the entire Asian economy to a grinding halt is not a good option either.
@davidarthur
@davidarthur 4 жыл бұрын
I have some discussions with people on the supply chain and like you say it’s difficult to get a handle on it without being over there. If it continues it’s sure to hit some brands, I suspect smaller brands will be impacted worse and sooner than big brands

Main difference is the big manufacturers have strict quality control on what comes out of Chinese factories. The no name ones usually dont.
@slin3232
@slin3232 4 жыл бұрын
If you actually look into the quality of some of the big names you are starting to doubt their QC. Even the most expensive stuff often is not tested 100% and so there is always a chance of riding a defective frame.

I linked to the frame in your Pinkbike story. Have you heard back from them? I ordered a frame last month, but it was returned to sender and they've been closed for weeks (holiday/coronavirus). Since you rode the NS... would the medium be appropriate for somebody 5'10"? I raced a Pro-mance M7007-II frame in Whistler/Squamish all summer and had no issues, certainly sold me on Chinese frames from reputable sellers. I also have 3 seasons or Chinese carbon wheels (Light Bicycle), lots of bike park laps, no issues.

Buy a light carbon frame. Load it up with 160 to 180 mm suspension.Add suspension lockout. Add dropper post and huge oversized tires. Now you have a 32+ lb. bike that is slow uphill and down. Ive been mtbing for 30 years. Things have gotten real stupid. The goal used to be a 25 lb. or less bike that ripped uphill and downhill. Long travel bikes are fine in the proper setting but now people are buying them to ride our local trails where around 100mm front and rear is really all you need. Just like those stupid gravel bikes. We already have cx bikes. And gravel bikes are slowly morphing into short travel 29er mtbs. Both of which are already here. And you get to pay 5g or more for a porky sled. Innovation?

My current bike a Lightcarbon lcfs958 I sold my Intense Recluse the minute i saw this frame and fell in love. m.pinkbike.com/photo/18106509/ www.lightcarbon.com/all-new-lightcarbon-trail-mtb-frame-lcfs958_p118.html With the money saved i was able to pimp it out Trickstuff Piccola brakes Chris king hubs di2/sram xx1 cassette mag/ti ht pedals revive dropper. 27.5 lbs and now running a Trust Shout fork. It flies and carries speed thru roots very well. One last thing you need to know is it will be very dependent on the right shock tune. I am running a fox with a digressive compression tune. For me at 140lbs it works very well. (Wouldn't suggest it for someone any heavier though) Sits up and pedals and combined with the high leverage of a 130mm travel on a 165x45 shock it gets out of the way on small and big hits. Also subscribed and very interested in seeing your video series on this bike. Be aware that the virus has hit them hard and will surely delay your getting a frame. Get clear glossy finish and add some ams or dyedbro frame protection. It will look dope. Peace.
