Becoming a freelance artist can be a big jump to make for any artist. For me it happened quite suddenly due to last year's events. Now that I've been doing this for over a year I have some thoughts for those who are considering leaving their job to become their own boss.

It’s just patience and polish after the idea is there. Just wanted to this reply as a way to point out that the tutorials I do here or on my membership area aren’t meant to make anyone paint like me. I think that would be pretty irresponsible and harmful for the creativity for anyone watching those tutorials and lectures. It’s also why I never share recreated work on my social media feeds either because I don’t want anyone to think that’s what they need to do to get there.

@@angrymikko Agreed. We all have a unique and special style based on our likes and dislikes and this is why I like your videos. It’s about inspiring people to find the tools and techniques to then go and explore what you can do with them. I think a lot of people get frustrated because they see someone turn some simple lines or shapes into a gorgeous piece of art and they can’t figure out how to get their own art to look as good but what it comes down to, in my mind at least, is to take the tools and the techniques you learned and explore what you can do with them. Through this exploration I feel art can really come alive and allow a persons unique style, skill and ability to shine! Thank you for your inspirational video as well because I have been really thinking about going freelance lately and not sure how to think about approaching it and all your words rang true for me. So thank you again!

I’m not a big believer in waiting for motivation or inspiration before starting to work but sometimes we all just need a break. I’ve never had an artist block but I have had time when I needed to take a good long break so I could return to art in a way that is enjoyable for me. I think a lot of the wording around “artists block” is about enforcing this idea we should be creative all the time. Artists feel guilty enough for not not working every second and I don’t think we need any more ways to feel bad about ourselves. If I don’t feel like working all the time I’m not going to apologise for taking care of myself. I don’t believe in artist blocks. Burnouts are real though and in this job like in any other job out there, sometimes you need a vacation. Taking care of yourself and your mental health should always be a priority over productivity in any field of work. When you get back to it. Try to take it slow and set the bar as low as you can. (For me office markers on post-its always work!)

On top of the examples given here there’s also the option of just having 2 jobs where neither of them is a full-time thing. I’ve worked a 4-day work week when I wanted to teach a concept art class on the 5th day and honestly it was pretty great because it brought so much variety to my days.

@@angrymikko exactly! I also have a feeling that becoming an artist would mean you will have moments where you have to be alone to think and focus. I feel like having another part-time job, especially when not an established artist like me, would help me stay connected to other people and make art relatable to others. I also think it would break the pressure of becoming a full time artist right away which can cause burn out to some beginners like me.

I’ve always loved art. From probably around a young kid to an adult it’s always been a passion for me. I’m nowhere near as good as I hoped I’d be by now.. but there were a lot of factors in that. Including my own laziness. Now as a father of two I don’t have a lot of time for it but I try to make time when I can. I’d really like to get good at the things that interest me the most. I work a dead end job and honestly I’m trying to work my way out of that. I have a chance and I’m finally going for that. And hoping this gives me the opportunity to either quit forever or maybe just quit and start working on art more. Turn it into something profitable.. though I almost hope I don’t have to do that. I’ve never enjoyed the idea of taking something beautiful like that and turning into something I use to get monetary value from. I’m a rather good baker and I’ve heard all the time that I should quit my job and bake full time. But I fear if I did that I’d lose my love for it. I feel the same way with art. And I know that isn’t true for everyone but mostly I’d like to just do what I please without restraints.

Loved this! 💜 I think a lot of people feel like, before they can make money from their art, they need to improve and study to become a brilliant artist. In reality you need to improve and study your business skills. Obviously improving your art helps too, but if you don’t know how to get your work seen and how to sell it then you could be the world’s best painter and still make no money.
@angrymikko

Marketing seems like an ugly word but I think it’s kind of important for anyone doing creative work. I feel like the ideas that come to me during a painting process are a gift and just dumping them somewhere would be pretty ungrateful. You never know who NEEDS to see your work. It might give them an escape, it could serve as a stepping stone for further ideas or it could provide a safe way for them to process their own emotions. Marketing isn’t necessarily always about you or your own work. I think it’s an obligation that no artist a professional or a hobbyist, should walk away from. It’s a small price to pay for all the wonders creativity gives us. We don’t know what purpose our art can have in the world but it’s definitely not our job to stop that chain reaction from happening. It would be like a scientist not publishing their findings. Art is bigger than us.

I used to think that the coolest thing for my art career would be to be in a gallery. But the cost of space for 2 weeks is more than I make in a month and the average visitor numbers in those spaces are less than 100 people during that time. The math just doesn’t work in my books to make it worth it. I do however have my biggest painting collection in a public space in a metro station for a 3rd year now with 15million passengers going through it every year. I’d much rather do something like that again where I can help bring art to people that wouldn’t go to a gallery. No offence to people who run galleries but I just don’t see what they could do for me that would be worth the price they’re asking.

Is there a different way to download your brushes than how you would usually download them? Or do you know if I’ve done something wrong? Thanks for everything you do! Edit: ok I just figured something out. The brushes will work fine when I use my finger, but when I use my Apple Pencil, they crash the app. New edit: never mind! Freelance is when an artist gets paid by someone, often big customers, to create art based on their needs. For example, a game company might commission a freelance artist to make a drawing poster, or a character drawing, something like that. It happens at smaller scales, too, like someone might commission a person to draw their character. Tl;dr: making art for people who pay you for specific works
