A new truck is one of the biggest investments you will make in your life, so you don’t want to screw it up. Should you get a gasoline-powered truck or a diesel? There are more options on the market than ever, but that doesn’t necessarily make the decision easier. We recently put a new 7.3L Godzilla-powered Ford F-250 Super Duty gas truck up against a 6.7L Scorpion F-250 Super Duty diesel to determine the strengths and weaknesses of each.
We tested things including pulling power, fuel mileage, acceleration, and more during our evaluation of these two trucks. We also took into account purchase price, the cost of maintenance and service, and fuel prices during our review. Keep watching as we break down the advantages to each powerplant to help ensure that your next purchase meets all of your driving needs.

Previous diesel mechanic here! I went with a 21 F250 7.3 and couldn’t be happier! I tow 10k-12k on the regular and it does what I need it to do and does it well. A lot of 6.7’s hardly pull anything anyway, it’s more of a status symbol to have a diesel. Lot of folks have to show off the fact they financed an $80k truck for 8 years. I stick to what I can pay cash for.

I’m sticking with gas. Getting there first is not what it’s about. Pulling over the pass faster is not (or sure as hell shouldn’t be) what it’s about. First up to speed is not what it’s about. Cost of repairs is everything about what it’s about. The short guys always want the diesels. Makes them feel bigger I guess.

Bought a ‘03 F250 new, with the new 6.0. Engine was great when it ran. Had it bulletproofed, spent tens of thousands and it kept breaking down, finally fixed it by throwing the engine out and having a Cummins dropped in. 5.9 12v ran perfectly until I got rid of the truck in ‘18 and downsized to a F150. Used to call the 6.0 the Power on Strike.

I have a 17 f250 Screw longbed with the 6.2. I absolutely love my truck. Would I go trade it in on an identical 7.3 Godzilla?, no. Because current truck prices are ridiculous. I paid 37k for my 2017 truck as a new leftover when the 2019s were hitting the lot. No way I’m paying twice that these days. I get 11-13 mpg whether towing my overloaded 26” enclosed car-hauler or commuting to work. I know a rural fencing & steel building contractor that has the 7.3 as his personal truck and just yesterday he told me he will eventually start swapping out his fleet of 5 powerstroke chassis cabs for the 7.3s as they start dying. He said the maintenance isn’t worth the few MPG in savings especially with diesel prices & excessive maintenance requirements for 5 of them. I personally don’t think I’ll ever need a diesel for what I will ever tow. The 6.2 will suffice. As far as longevity there is a well known contributor to the ford trucks forum that has well over a million miles towing on his 6.2, original engine & transmission. He’s a hotshot out of Texas I believe.

Traded a f450 in after 16 thousand dollars fixing it in 2020 for a f350 7.3 4.30 gears. Tow a 2020 413 raptor toy hauler. With side by side and everything else it with the truck scales 28k. The 7.3 in manual mode slowed better down hill than the diesel and I keep it in 8th towing at 65-70 mph.

I prefer the simplicity of a gas engine. I don’t have to worry about DEF, regen cycles, the dpf system, not working the engine enough and the cost of repairs when it is out of warranty.

The biggest benefit of diesel to me isn't so much trucks it's always been equipment you can park a dozer or tractor for a year or more. Throw a fresh battery on and fire up a diesel. Gas not so much

Diesel is king. I don't want my truck to even think about shifting down while towing uphill. I'll take the one with a cummins in it though.
@gwot
@gwot 3 ай бұрын
Hard argument these days, a lot of these trucks have pretty fast 10 speeds, so shifting down isn't much of an issue than the 6 speed days. The hardest sell for Diesel is the emissions control, they're slowly killing the engine and fail all the time. Unless you tow near max tow most of the time, it's almost not worth getting a diesel for more money upfront AND later (fuel and maintenance)

Interesting video. As a 6.7 Tremor owner I can say I've considered trading for a 7.3 Tremor... but ultimately I think I fall into a similar mindset as Chris that I'd rather be ready for almost anything, which in my mind is eventually a slide in pop up camper and towing the crawler. Or towing two crawlers. Or driving 5-600 miles straight shot. But I hate the complexity of the 6.7 Powerstroke. I'm considering changing over to a 6.7 Cummins. I feel like there are so many caveats to this discussion, not just diesel vs gas but which diesel vs which gas?

100% this. the only reason I didn't buy a Cummins is because of the 6spd, having 4 extra gears when towing to keep rpms low is huge. but now after being on my 2nd F350 Tremor I'm very tempted to switch to RAM with the simplicity of the platform and ease to delete the truck. now there are even rumors Cummins is developing a hydrogen/ diesel engine which will be a game changer.
@TeamNiem
@TeamNiem Жыл бұрын
@@c.h.9827 the 10 speed is definitely a big advantage. Going from my 6spd 2015 Powerstroke to a 10spd 2021 was a pretty big change. Since the 2023 Ram update isn’t coming with a 10 speed I feel like by the time it does get one there will be so much technology baked into the the truck that I won’t be as interested. I want my cake, and I want to eat it too!

My ‘21 Tremor with the 7.3 is overall better than my ‘20 Cummins. MPG is worse and power is slightly worse but there is no stress of emissions failure, DEF running low, or the expensive maintenance. Also at only 6’2 my head was 1” from the roof in the Ram. I have plenty of room in the Ford and an extra few inches of room in the back seat and bed. Ram was good to me but I’m much happier in the Ford. Would go with Powerstroke if I had the money but the 7.3 is impressive especially with a tune

I would venture to say that you would not necessarily want large mud tires when towing. Seems like it would effect the fuel economy and handling when under a load....especially if it is lifted very much. But hey...

I sold my Ram last month. I'm not sure I'll ever buy another diesel. The new ones have been incredibly unreliable and expensive (in my experience). I like that 7.3L Godzilla engine. If I needed a new fullsize truck, that engine with the Tremor package or a Power Wagon would be a tough call.

People hate everything it's like democrats and Republicans lol. But seriously I've had lots of trucks and the most expensive engine and most broke down was a diesel. It stranded me more than all others combined. My brothers 6.0 powerstroke cost him over 20,000 not including all the work he missed. Both of us went back to gas and been trouble free since. It's true nothing pulls like a diesel but modern gas is good enough for us and neither of us has been stranded since. I agree though get what you prefer it's the good thing about America we got choices.
