So much good information!!! One other thing people should consider in deciding above ground pool versus in ground pool. An in ground pool is forever. If someday you find yourself not using it - kids have grown, and maybe you are not a big swimmer, etc. - you still have the pool with all the maintenance and expenses which are considerable. An above ground pool is not that big a deal to get rid of and then repurpose that section of your yard.

Very true, that's why you pour concrete in the pool and now you have a very large patio. 😁

@@TheDIYGuy-ut7ee yes but IF you go to sell the house (especially if you live in warm climate or a high end neighborhood where everyone else has one) you’ll lose money on the beautiful pool you had installed for upwards of 80k and well over. If this is the home you’re planning to stay for the rest of your life then yes filling it in as your children fly away from the nest and you’re getting grayer each day..is definitely the best option.

We picked up the intex sand filter this year. Game changer. Well worth the $125. The cartridge style they come with are not big enough for a fish tank much less a pool. We have the 9x18 above ground. Next purchase is going to be the salt system.

We purchased a 28' Doughboy pool in 1992. We still have it and it is used constantly in the summer. The deep end at 6ft deep and shallow end is 3.5' deep. We also have a deck around the entire pool. With nice steps and a gate. The key to keeping any pool is the care you put into it. The original cost of the pool was $5000. May a few hundred for the excavation of the deep and shallow ends.

I just ordered a 10/30in wire frame pool(mearteve brand) ..I have 3 kids. 16,10 and 2. I thought it was a better idea ,so it's not huge but a great idea for a whole family to hang out in.This year for the state of Maine is already crazy humid . (Very odd weather for June already,here) I also didn't want to get something extraordinary, so it's safer for a toddler to learn how to swim ,and to learn how to learn to take care of a pool. My daughter is 16 and wanted an ingrown pool,but I negotiated with her because of the prices and to learn how to take care of one. And way better than those plastic blow up ones. Maybe next year If this year If this is taken care of ,I'll look at a bigger one next year

Hi from Australia! Great video. I love the Intex style pool. Just retired ours, was 14 ft diameter, 3 1/2 feet deep. We got 6 years out of it! The poles unfortunately rusted out. Only cost $300 dollars but we added a sand filter and cut a hole for a skimmer. Best modifications. A skimmer makes it easier for vacuuming and adding chemicals. Just put up a 14 ft diameter 4 ft deep Bestway. Hope we get just as good life out of this one! Cheers, Kerry.

After owning and setting up so many above ground pools growing up, I have to say go salt water. I don’t think you mentioned it in your video. Every single one of my pools was normal chemical chlorine, but my last pool I setup i did salt water. This was quite a few years ago, 4 or 5. You pour in a bag or two of pool salt when you first fill the pool. depending on your pool size. You also add a small salt water system inline before your filter. The system runs for a few hours every day when you run the filter. It uses the salt in the water to generate chlorine. You can directly control your chlorine levels by simply letting the machine run longer. If you need to shock the pool after a rain storm or after heavy use, you simply let the machine run longer to generate more chlorine. You never have to add more salt unless you drain the water, as salt doesn’t evaporate. The correct salt levels are also so low you can barely if at all smell or taste salt. I personally loved it. I never had to buy chlorine or shock, and that saved so much money over the season I had that pool up. After looking recently, it appears the machine I had, the intex Krystal clear system is discontinued. I paid $50 for it at Walmart at the time. Now those or similar systems are in the upper $100 to $200 price range. I’m wondering if those machine lowered the profit margins of chlorine sales, so they discontinued offering it to boost sales. Just a thought. But you should still definitely look into salt water pools.

You should always install salt cells after the filter. You want filtered water running through it and salt cells scale up and you don't want all that dumping in your filter. That's the way we did it on all the inground pools we built.

I see now that building a deck takes a professional. The deck builder here is obviously really good and has a business doing this-not just a typical homeowner with a few tools. It is not worth it to cut corners. I wish I could fly him out to Northern CA to do mine. He is top choice! But all to say-I think having the investment in a pool is worth a good deck, which adds to your home resale value.

AGPs are a great way to have fun in the sun without adding a permanent structure to your property. I might be wrong but although pools don't add much intrinsic value to your home (in the bank's/insurance's eyes), a well maintained pool does add resale value, in most markets. Thank you sharing! You should add cyanuric acid also called conditioner to the water. It helps keep the chlorine from evaporating to quickly, lowering the amount you need to use. Those Hayward pool vacs aren't meant to be left in the pool full time. They will wear out pretty quickly. I put mine in every 1-2 weeks depending on how dirty the pool is. Keep the hoses straight when you store them and rinse the chlorinated water out the vac head when you take it out. I use to be a pool boy :)

I have a big (15x20 foot, 52” tall) intex above ground pool. I take it down every winter and my family has enjoyed it now for almost 10 years. I’ve only had to replace the pump last year and the ladder this year. I would recommend them to anyone! You just have to stay on top of maintenance. Clean and store it for the winter months and it’ll last years.

I live in an area Florida where I swim every day in the lake. I found out recently they will be closing it for swimming. The swim spa things are way too expensive and my KZfaq search led me to the idea of swimming tethered in an above ground pool. My question for you is about variations in temperature. I live in central Florida. in the summer months, the temperature remains within 15°. And hot! But in the winter months, the daytime temperature gonna be 80° while the nighttime temperature is 45 or lower. I honestly have no idea whether that would affect this type of pool. I don’t know if you can help me but I certainly enjoyed your comment.

If it didn’t freeze where a I live I would never take mine down. But you could get a heater for yours. They really vary in price depending on you size of pool. I think I have the largest pool they make it’s 35,000 litres and I’d need the heater that would cost me around $1500. During June to September it hovers around 80 without a heater. So when the kids go back to school I take it down.

As an inground pool owner for most of life.....I'd by a above ground pool in a heart beat. My pool is 23 years old and I do my own maintenance on my pool. That includes replacing my pool pumps twice and doing all the plumbing. The thing that kills me is my two pool liner replacements....4000 a pop. I live in the north east and wintwrs are hard on liners. Inground gunite pools don't far any better because of the freeze thaw cycle. Np6t to mention evey frog,garden snake and poor little rabbits that drown in my pool that as a father I clean every day before my faimly wakes and jumps in for fun in the sun. When I was 12 yrs old we had a above ground pool and maintaining it was a whole lots easier. Remember all pipes are buried. I had to replace a broken pipe once. I had to break up patio to get to the pipe. If I weren't a handy guy I would go broke. Get the aboveground pool and put a nice deck around it. Your kids won't know the difference. Inground pools are just a waste o time and money! !!

Great information! Thanks so much. Do you think something like this would be good for off season training with a swim tether? They’re closing the area where I swim daily in town and I’ve been looking at swim spas. They are so expensive and well beyond anything I can afford. I’m trying to come up with an alternate affordable plan. Maybe this is it? The area I live in is warm during the day in the winter at night it drops down to about 40° so there’s a potential for a 40° difference from day to night.

How much does it cost to have someone else level the ground? I just bought a bestway 14ftx33. Pro Max steel frame. Wanted to upgrade from a 10ft fast set pool. I didn't have to level the ground. Mary Pittsburgh Pa.

got 1 of those intex 10 by 30 above ground pools and debating the cost and need to clean etc as test pool. Used to be a swimmer in high school for 2 yrs and not that young and spry anymore but like the idea of chilling in a pool still so debating the cost and lvl ground, vacuums, water testing to see what I think of the general cost and maintenance and if its worth it as I am single and have time. So any info I can glean at this point as it is already up and running with basic setup kit and net and chlorine tab floater going. Kits should definitely come with more as the setups and additional purchases that need to be made are not outlined or suggested at all as useful info and as a novice pool owner there is still a lot to consider and buy to maintain a healthy pool.

Thank you, great information. My question is do all the above ground pools have to be chlorine? Can you have a salt water pool with these pools? I guess you would have to make it yourself? What the benefit or draw backs of each? 🤷🏻‍♀️
@DoItYourselfDad
@DoItYourselfDad Жыл бұрын
Yes, you can definitely do salt in an above-ground pool and systems are available. Pros are ease of maintenance, meaning the levels of stabilizer in your pool, feel of the water, and cost of chemicals. Just know that salt pools do still have chlorine in them, they are not chlorine-free. The cons would be corrosion of metal parts of the pool and maintenance on the salt cell. We're putting in an inground pool right now and debating a salt system, right now Im leaning towards salt

Nice video. Most above ground pools are made of PVC and cannot be recycled. They end up in the dump. I’ve seen people use above ground pools and dispose them off at the end of the season which isn’t good for the environment.

That may be the case with the one pensive intex style pools, I doubt anyone would be tossing a 5k metal sided pool. My liner is on year 6 and still doing fine.

Putting your above ground pool next to a deck is basically the only good way to do it. It makes it look nicer and it's much easier to get in and out, you can actually JUMP into the pool like a normal pool etc.

Yes, they can be. If you have expansion joints in the slab there are things you can put down (foam underlayment) so the pool lays flat.

Leave the water in. Look up winterizing an above ground pool, you basically clean, shock, plug the filter lines and drain the lines and then cover it.
