Air fryers are all the rage, and for good reason. They're essentially countertop convection ovens, but technology has changed a lot since we initially reviewed them. There a lots of new styles and types, including the air fryer toaster oven. So which one is right for you?

Every unit shown in this video is a convection oven. An actual air fryer is patented by Phillips and is a drawer. It’s expensive because they own the technology. The radiant heat is on the top and the hot convection air blows up from the bottom.

Home ec is so undervalued and underfunded these days. Everyone in my highschool considered it a blowoff class and a lot of them still have no idea how to cook and clean for themselves. Truly is disappointing. And also shows how badly their parents failed them as well. Home ec is honestly the only class I had any respect for because it's actually useful information that we use in our daily lives. Definitely more useful than forcing calculus down an artist's throat

I have had the Breville Smart Oven Air for several years and I love it. She didn’t mention the other benefits of this oven though. It also dehydrates, broils, slow cooks or slow roasts, warms, reheats, and has a special bagel setting that leaves the bottom of the bagel soft.

Just wrap foil around the bottom liner and make it loose enough that you can gently press the foil into it's indentation. Also, always, always, always slide the racks out with a tray/plate under it. I am so pleased that I finally bought an air fryer - and especially pleased that I paid attention to the positive reviews of other users, and decided on this one kzfaq.infoUgkxD4Qeo-HRLxMfom_PDinM_SBfes00qJsB . It is just perfect for the two of us, and takes up very little space on my small countertop. I roasted salmon filets for dinner tonight and they were the best ever - slightly crispy on the outside but moist inside. Best of all, no smelly kitchen or difficult clean-up. My only complaint would be the lack of even a few printed recipes to get started. My generation does not find it easy to access the QR code and use the smart phone app. I bought a recipe book instead, which gave me the confidence to experiment.

The trick is to just line the basket with foil or baking paper so any grease doesn't drop though the gaps. For messy items like chicken there's a proper non stick roasting tray that it comes with - you see it in the video below the air fryer basket but she didn't use it which is why it made such a mess. It's very weird that the video spent ages showing off one air fryer but only showed the negatives of the toaster oven one - which is actually much better value over time as it can cook a full size cake, pizza or other meals that would normally require a oven.

Our first fryer was the Ninja flip up air fryer that is similar to the toaster fryer you demonstrated. We loved it at first but started to get frustrated with how hard it is to clean. Stuff splatters everywhere, and even with the removable tray and bottom access panel, it difficult to clean due to the heating elements on top and bottom. You can't really spray water in there like you need to. We decided to try the Ninja basket style and it is so much easier to clean and cooks better. I've got one of the toaster oven combinations and I love it - with a few caveats like cleaning and in my case a manufacturer that does not provide spare parts, which will make me go to a different brand next time. That said, it's a perfect replacement for the large oven I have in my kitchen. I have a shelf in the garage with small appliances, so they don't clutter up the kitchen. I almost never use a microwave, so it's in the garage. The little toaster oven is in the garage too and that's a good thing: we live in the south, so it's hot. Being able to keep the house cool while still using an oven is great, plus if you do airfry or roast an entire chicken you leave the smell in the garage too. Since I got that toaster oven I rarely use my big oven for anything other than pizza and bread where you need the size and for the bread I can select steam injection for the perfect crust - a function a toster oven doesn't have. For a two person household like ours the investment into a $400 toaster oven is definitely worth it in my book. It's also a time-saver. My large oven takes half an hour to preheat, the toaster oven goes to 400 in about 90 seconds. I don't use multiple layers in the oven though. Although convection I found that there is a difference between the levels and therefor I just use one tray (which is enough for 2 people anyways).

Your video helped me understand the advantages and disadvantages of a combined appliance. Both of your suggested models are way to large for the counter space I have and your best model seems to be no longer available. That's not really surprising since it's been over a year since your recommendation. I'm considering getting a Delonghi Livenza Compact Air Fryer Toaster Oven. It's not quite as big or expensive but I'm willing to try it out based on my past experience with the brand. What is the great drawback with air fryers and related appliances? The cleaning! Not the dishwasher proof drawers (which reviewers like to feature) but the element. Many elements are difficult to clean even with a toothbrush in those tiny spaces. Some users have found you can sometimes gently lift the element if you are handy with a screw driver giving more room for cleaning. I certainly don't want this hassle or the risks. View the air fryer cleaning videos on line. Fryers operate at very high temperatures and that debris on the element can drop onto your food. Best clean often. There are also reports from a number of users that some air fryers do smell - a plastic - rubber odour which does not go away. Not cardboard under grills! Take a look at Cathy's fryer reviews. Frankly I prefer the stainless steel of my convection oven to fryers' non-stick surfaces both from a health and cleaning point of view. Many thanks for this excellent video Gear Heads with the differences between fryers and toasters clearly profiled. You always set a high standard.

I've been using "air fryers" for more than 10 years and cleaning the heating element has never been an issue. Just like the broiler elements on a gas stove, the halogen heating elements pretty much take care of themselves with a 600+ degree F surface temperature that turns everything into a fine ash that dissipates un-noticed. I've never noticed a bad smell after use like one can get with a microwave oven. Mostly I have used the more old fashioned "halogen oven" (sometimes "turbo oven) Basically, a large glass or stainless steel bowl with the halogen heating unit built into the lid. Though I agree that dealing with the hot lid requires some forethought (I built a special rack) I like the larger, nearly 12" diameter of the bowl which allows for a full size pizza and also for a full size pizza stone which I can pre-heat and achieve a genuine crispy bottom crust. Full size chickens, cakes, loaves of bread and Sunday roasts are also easily done. I live in a tropical climate and one of the great advantages of halogen cooking is being able to take the unit outside on hot days and not add additional heat to the house like a traditional oven does. Much more power efficient as well.

A couple of years ago, we were in between homes after selling our old one and before our new one was finished being built. We stayed for those couple of months in a rental cabin that didn't have an oven, so bought the Breville Smart Oven Air Fryer Pro, and loved it so much that we use it in our new home. I use it to toast, bake small amounts of foods and also proof my bread before baking. I used it in the rental to bake full loaves of bread; it was a tight fit but it worked okay. I don't use it for that anymore as my regular oven does that job, but I still use it to proof my bread. I haven't used it as an air fryer, although the mesh rack is in one of my cabinets, as I wasn't sure it would do a decent job there. I was glad to see this video on that function, although the clean-up might be a pain, so if I do try the air fry function, I will likely do something not so messy. Thanks for the info-it was helpful!

I bought a Breville Smart oven on the tuesday leading up to Christmas. On the thursday my regular oven decided to kick it, 2 days before Christmas! I cooked everything in the airfryer basket. Didn’t turn a thing. Pork belly came out to a turn with spectacular crackle. Turkey was perfect, chicken was moist & juicy. Baked veges, wonderful! Even baked Cakes & desserts in it. I couldn’t believe how good it all was. Cleaning was a little bit of a pest, but not the worst thing i’ve ever done (I wrapped the crumb catcher in the base in foil) Only thing that annoyed me was the Australian version isn’t quite as big as the US version, ours only has 3 positions and is missing 2 of your functions. But still.… Wow! Edited to fix a punctuation problem.

I have a Cosori drawer-style air fryer and after looking at several lists of the best air fryer toaster ovens, I just don't see any that could replace this, due to either: -Not enough height tolerance to fit a whole chicken. -Reliance on the little shelf racks like a standard oven. -Take up even more space than my current air fryer. Luckily I got mine for free so if the coating wears off eventually I can just find something equivalent to replace it at that time. There will likely be better models/tech available by then too.

I cut to fit an oven mat and put it on a rack placed on the bottom rung of my Breville. It kept any food and grease or oil from falling on the bottom heating elements. Much easier to clean and doesn’t affect the air frying process.

I bought a Toshiba convection oven/air fryer, and I loved it until...I tried to clean the supposed non-stick interior. Because the food is so much closer to the walls of the oven, they get dirty much, much faster, and as someone who doesn't wanna set aside an hour to clean my clean every few days, the oven ended up in my garage, still reeking of beer batter fish and French fries The other problem is that it's virtually impossible to clean underneath the heating elements, since they're not removable. I went back to using my regular self-cleaning oven, where all I need to do to clean it is to hit the "self-clean" button every few weeks.

Re the chicken wings: you don't have to put them in a single layer. The irregular shape of them means that you can dump a whole lot into the air fryer and the air will still circulate really well. I usually full the basket to the top, and give the wings a shake halfway through the cooking time.

So I can cook more than 1lb?
@squiddybilly
@squiddybilly 2 жыл бұрын
@@christyxy702 I'd go more by volume than weight because they need to fit in your air fryer. Given that 1lb is about 450g, I'm sure I could cook that amount in my Philips air fryer. I used to have a smaller Philips, but now I've got a Philips XXL. The only time you would have to put wings in single layers would be if you were using a relatively wet batter/crumb coating that might rub off before it cooks. If I'm using a plain flour/baking soda coating, or just a marinade, then I just chuck the wings in to the basket's Max fill line.

@@christyxy702 Lisa said in the video that 2 pounds of wings could be used but she was using 1 pound. I have a Phillips and have never done wings yet, but I’m going to try it. I like the size of the Instant Air basket…..10 x 10 she said. It’s bigger than the Phillips. I’ve done fries, both frozen and fresh, and they come out great. Also tater tots that grandson loves.

I was about to order the Oster XL french door style for almost $300 from QVC until I saw this video! I own the Oster french door toaster oven with convection turbo now, but thought, it might be better to get the combined air fryer/oven...but NADA after hearing this lady explain the down side of using pull out shelves. I own a Bella drawer style/square shaped air fryer from Best Buy and it works great and big enough for 4 to 6 servings, it's a good size drawer. Thanks for this video! Saved me from paying $299 on something that I don't need.

Ours is the Sur La Table brand that can do a rotisserie chicken which is one of the main features we looked for. We’re very happy with our air fryer which is about the same size as the Instant Pot featured in this video

I don’t have any problem with the tray falling out of my Instant basket air fryer as some have mentioned. It has little rubber grips on the sides that keep it inside well. I agree with Lisa and others that it is super easy to clean: just add some hot soapy water inside with the tray, let sit for five minutes and everything washes up easy.

I have a Breville Convection Toaster oven that I bought in 2013 so way before air fryers. Consequently no air fryer basket but we use it daily as a toaster and it is a great second oven when we have company or just don't want to heat up the big oven. Also have the 4 quart Vortext which we love! There are only 2 of us so it is just the right size! So nice to cook without the stove getting messy from frying!

Honestly if you have a convection oven, you have an air fryer. Just get the basket type racks that will fit in your oven, or any rack that has holes in it. Just make sure of the measurements before you buy.

with drawer style fryers breadcrumbs tend to get embedded in the teflon making it harder to clean over time and when the fan dies the whole unit is worthless. it is for those reasons I upgraded to a Gourmia GTF7600 after my old air fryer died. no doubt some spots are hard to reach when cleaning. but like a normal oven you don't need to clean it very often unless you make really messy foods on a regular basis. as for the basket a grill brush can get the job done to a reasonable level with little effort but a good pressure washer will be needed if you want perfection. another thing to note is that the wings made in this video are not done correctly if you want results close to what oil frying can give you need to render the fat and you can't do that in any fryer without elevating the wings. because the fat will pool under the wing making one side soggy and then start smoking long before the wings are cooked. the trick for a toaster oven/airfryer is to buy a 12.5inch tray+rack combo and bend the edges a little so it slides in then add a little water to the tray to keep the fat from burning. you also need aluminum free baking powder+salt to draw out moisture and give it that nice wing flavor.

I have owned the Breville Smart Oven (900 series) for years. Love it. I use the air fryer for tater tots for one thing. I can put a 9x13 glass baking pan WITH handles into it. I bake pies in it. I bake bread in it. We use it more than our standard oven. I wish I could find out if the different settings do anything different with the heating elements. Bake, Cookies, Pizza, Roast. It does remember the previous settings, but any other differences? The one big improvement they can make, and I let Breville know, make the rack front and back bars offset. One on top of the rack and one below. Getting hot items off the rack in the lower position can be a challenge. I had a problem after several months with the item selector and Breville set me a replacement with a few days and prepaid return shipping. It does not get better.
