Episode 10 of SHOW & TELL, the very first one of 2023 comes exclusively from my bathroom as I attempt to shake off the excesses of the past few weeks and the New Year by plunging in to an in-depth analysis of bathroom and toilet photography!
It may seem a flippant and filthy topic but there is a huge repository of loo and tub photography that encompasses artists and photographers as diverse as Jacques Henri Lartigue, William Klein, Robert Frank, Robert Capa, Margaret Bourke White, Gordon Parks, Nick Ut, Eve Arnold, Lee Miller and many, many more!
The film will veer wildly through inconsequential nonsense, wild digressions and bad jokes before finally making good by looking at some serious images and ending on a rapid summary of the career of the woman who took the bets and most notorious bathroom photo of all time, the incomparable Lee Miller, so be sure to watch all the way through.

Jeezuz Stephen. That deep dive into Lee Miller rocked me to the core. I saw the running time of the video was over 30min and I knew something was up after you softballed us in the first portion. This one is resonating well past the end. Makes all bathroom photos I see on IG even more trivial, self-grandizing and absent of contributing to the human condition. Excellent Piece I have a Richardson's Limited Edition Large print of ZAPPA on the toilet taken from a different angle when Zappa was on that Phone which wasn't Posed ( I think this one is ) which I have framed & it's on my bathroom wall. Great.

I have often wondered if there is a singular principle or a theme to identifying a great piece of art/film and would always converge to same metric: any film where one cannot predict its genre is more rewarding than feeling marginally vindicated. In other words, going in with something and coming out with something completely else, somewhat similar to to going to the lavatory. Thank you for a wonderful piece (plus sharing such rare collection pf photos) , and for evoking one of the strangest reaction of feeling oddly enlightened. Definitely going to change the way I think about Duchamp, about photos and narratives as well as taking a poop!

Welll Stephan, thats some heavy shit. You are whimsically disarming, throughly entertaining and deeply knowledgeable. And like a good bathroom break your toilet episode leaves one feeling lighter and satisfied. I remember watching an old video titled (i think) the many lives of Lee Miller. I recall her son Anthony in it too, I was left believing that he felt his mother was less loving and attentive than as a child than he would have liked. But after discovering her previous life he was forgiving if not a little saddened that that part of her life wasn’t shared with him. At least that is how I remember it, I may still have a bad VHS copy of the film somewhere. I rarely comment on KZfaq videos (perhaps you wish I didn’t) but I evangelize your channel and spread the word of this bald man on the crapper at every opportunity and BTW maybe its an English thing but the toilet paper roll is on backwards dude, come on, get your shit together mate 😮

I must say that I am aghast and most unhappy that I have had to see this. I find it hard to believe that people do actually hang the bog roll the wrong way round, including you!! That aside though, another infotaining video and I really liked the Lee Miller insight. I thought toilet/bathroom photos was purely in the domain of instagram 'influencers'.

Happy New Year from across the pond! I am tempted to tell you her name was actually pronounced "Lie MillAIR" but that would be pushing the joke a little too far. Really well paced and taking us on a journey which was worth it. I had known of Miller and as you said, her life story could have taken up the entire half hour easily, but that wasn't what you were after. A great way to start the year!
