The thing with the grandma and the father noticing that taki was in her place was because the grandma and mitsuhas mother also had the tradings happen. Its also implied that similar things happened in the past, like the burning down of the shrine which let to losing the reasons for the rituals (for example the sake and the why they make it). Mitsuhas mom died and my guess is that the father couldnt save her like taki saved mitsuha in the end, thats why he left the shrine. Oh and about the threads: in japan its believed that people that belong to eachother are connected by a red thread: human relations are predestined by a red string that the gods tie to the pinky fingers of those who find each other in life. Legend has it that the two people connected by this thread will have an important story, regardless of the time, place or circumstances. Another thing mitsuhas hairband points to :)

You sir, set the bar very high for a first anime ever. There are not much anime movies on that level. Some which would come to my mind would be A Silent Voice, I Want to Eat Your Pancreas, Blue Thermal, Patema Inverted, Sing a Bit Of Harmony or the Studio Ghibli Movies. If you start watching a series together, I would highly recommend "Rainbow: The Seven from Compound Two, Cell Six" which is a post-World War II anime series telling the story of a group of people from different backgrounds who meet up in jail trying to escape and start anew. It is really a 10/10 anime, a hidden gem.

I don't know if this is true, but I've read somewhere that Taki wrote "I Love you" Instead of his name because they met under the moonlight and the Moon God protects all love messages. So he was sure that the writing wouldn't have be erased and also the message would have been more motivating than a name you forget who belongs to.
