USB, dynamic microphones are still rare. Most dynamic, USB mics are condenser and for that reason they are not usually the best option for recording in spaces not specially treated for audio recording. For most podcasters, streamers, KZfaqrs, creators, a dynamic capsule is going to be optimal for rejecting more of the sounds you don't want (background noise and reverb) and capturing more of what you do want, your voice. The MV7 does a great job of bringing the look and sound of the Shure SM7B (my daily mic.) to a USB microphone. The sound is more mid-range focused which means it will sound a little brighter than the SM7B but they are a very close match to my ear, for my voice.

Both mics sounded the same when they were both connected via XLR, but when the MV7 was connected via USB, I liked it more. It just sounded more clean and crisp and more natural

I am responsible for the imaging of 10 radio stations in Switzerland. We have equipped our station voice with a Shure MV7, as he still flies around the world as a Swiss Airline pilot and records our voice overs in the closet of the respective hotel room. And it sounds fantastic. We even put the previous $3000 Neumann U87 in the corner in the studio and record all voice overs with the Shure MV7, as his voice provides even better raw material for post production. Highly recommended this part, definitely also suitable for professional use. Thumbs up! I love it!

I've never seen such a quality and thorough review of a mic! I've watched so many mic reviews which feel so rushed but this is exceptionally great! Love the review and it actually made me buy the mic 2 days ago. Now I'm using it for gaming and my school projects :D I think I've had my Blue Yeti for quite some time now and it was always way too sensitive and had a lot of distortion. The quality, of course, was decent as well but it became annoying to use because my friends could hear everything that was going on in my house and now I don't have that problem anymore with the Shure MV7. Keep it up man and thank you for the amazing work!

Thanks, Andrew. I was surprised how close they match on my voice as well but everyone sounds different even on the same microphone so it's hard to compare against different users but always nice to have a bunch of different types of voices on each mic so we can at least maybe find someone who sorta matches our voice. The tough thing with mics is you never really know until you try it yourself.

Thanks for the video. I switched to the Shure SM7B from a Yetti alittle over 6 months ago and glad I made the investment. It is night and day. But looking at this, this sounds very similar and more affordable. I just feel the price point is a bit high if you are trying to appeal to the people that go after the Yetti's, podmics etc. 150-199 seems way more reasonable. I will consider getting these if I want to expand my podcast set up to have multiple guest because it has a XLR adapter. The software is a nice touch though. Hopefully one day they release a new SM7B with that software and a fethead built in and a added mute button. But one can only dream! The MV7 will be interesting to pair with a rodecaster pro mixer. I wonder if it will sound almost the same as the SM7B. Maybe I'll bite the bullet and try lol. But for now the SM7B is almost unbeatable. I wish I made the switch years ago lol. MV7 has potential to attract the people still use to a USB set up while giving a similar sound. Kudos to Shure for making this!
@RayOrtega
@RayOrtega 3 жыл бұрын
Agree it might not compete well with other USB mics cause of price but if you want the SM7B sound, you can get this and you'd be saving a lot of money. The tests you see me do later in the video, check the timestamps in the description, are both mics going into the Rodecaster ;)
@DJSkandalous
@DJSkandalous 3 жыл бұрын
@@RayOrtega ah, I didn't notice you connected the MV7 into the Rodecaster! Awesome, I will give it another listen! I think a interesting video would be trying both with the Rodecaster and adding the built in affects like the big bottom, de-esser etc. Also a Fethead would limit the noise floor a bit for the MV7 in your Rodecaster. With my SM7B I was able to drop it from 35 to 25 db. Im sure it would help with the MV7 too even though they said it is not as gain hungry.

Through the entirety of the USB MV7 vs SM7B segment, I had no idea the mics were switching between each other because the subtitles were covering the part of the screen telling the viewer of the change. If that doesn’t show how similar they are, I don’t know what would, lol. Fantastic mic.

My son who lives and does production in Bali, ask me a week ago, the price for the SM7B and I told him, $399. "Ouch", he said. @ShawnSmithTheMobilePro
@ShawnSmithTheMobilePro 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Ray - it’s been a long time! Great review as always - thank you! I LOVE my SM7B, but also love Shure’s innovation here, and even deeper commitment to podcasting with the MV7! Three quick questions: 1 - How would you rate the MV7 windscreen and resistance to plosives compared to the SM7B? It’ sounded a bit more sensitive to popping on plosives than the SM7B on the recording, but I’d love your opinion...Do you think most folks will need a pop filter, or is the MV7 close enough to the SM7B, with nothing else needed to control plosives? 2 - Does the MV7 save all MOTIV settings in the mic itself? (like the MV-88 MOTIV app for iOS) - including compression, limiter, tone etc - controls you can’t access from the mic face itself? Hope so! This would be ideal in case you’re using it with a computer without the software on it, or with an iOS device... I can’t find any documentation for the MOTIV app online yet. 3 - Is the MV7 iOS compatible? (Class Compliant), and if so, can you connect it directly to an iPhone via USB to Apple Lightning to USB Camera adapter, w/o a powered hub or external power supply of any kind? (like you can with ATR2100, AT2005, Samson Q2U, etc). Or does it need to be connected to an iPad and/or extra power (ie connected to a wall outlet or laptop via Apple Lightning to USB-3 camera adapter + USB to MV7) This would be AWESOME for Mobile Pro Podcasting if it could be powered only with an iPhone - fingers crossed! Would love to know...Always appreciate your reviews, Ray - thank you again!
@ShawnSmithTheMobilePro
@ShawnSmithTheMobilePro 3 жыл бұрын
UPDATE - I see from other reviews, including B&H Photo, that it connects to both iOS and Android phones natively, and Shure even sells a micro USB to Lightning connector, and can control the mic settings from their MOTIV desktop and iOS app, so I assume the answer to my Question 3 is, “Yes”. But no word on if it saves app settings to mic or the app. I’d still love your thoughts on my other two questions...Thank you, Ray!
@RayOrtega
@RayOrtega 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Shawn, good to hear from you! I'd say the MV7 is more susceptible to plosives because the capsule is closer to the front of the grill than the 7b which is set back. And of course you get the big windscreen for the 7b as an option and not one here. But I was within a couple inches and didn't pop it, also go off axis and I think most will be fine that said if someone has heavy plosives it might need more help. 2 - I ran several tests and it's hard to tell just from ear but some things I did notice, when I went from desktop to iOS, the settings that I set on the desktop for EQ and Compression did come over to the iOS app! And when I plugged back into desktop the app the settings did not reset although this could still indicate that the app is saving them. However in each case the gain setting did change for whatever reason. But when I listen to the recordings I made in the Voice Memo app after changing the settings, it sounds like it's recording the same i.e. it's not applying the settings in other apps unfortunately. 3 - Even the Touch Panel is working via lightening into my iphone, LEDs powered and functions working.
@ShawnSmithTheMobilePro
@ShawnSmithTheMobilePro 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Ray Ortega - really appreciate your responses...nothing like real-world testing by a pro like yourself. Very odd the Motiv iOS settings aren’t transferring to other apps...I only say that because I’m pretty sure the MV88 settings are saved on the mic, and can be used with other apps. Just seems very limiting to force us to only use the Motiv app to record with the MV7 on iOS...so no custom settings when using it with video apps, live-streaming, etc.? Just really hard to understand why they would do that, unless it’s a tech restriction and/or different setup from the MV88. Definitely a head-scratcher... Anyway, thanks again for testing and your responses - really appreciate it. Again - great review. All the best to you!

question that comes to mind is the dsp setting you make on the computer, are those processing on the computer, or are they being programmed into the mic. Basically can I train the mic on a personal computer, and then hook it up to a company pc for zoom meetings and expect that my settings are retained?

Hello Ray Ortega It could be late to ask... but I am looking for a Microphone XLR, mixer, or interfaced equipment and I am extremely new to this type of thing can I have any advice on it? I am planning on getting Shure MV7 and AG03 Yamaha or Goxlr mini for singing through to my phone and desktop streaming from time to time is it a-okay set up or there is a better way for me. The problem with my current setup is: 1) there is a loud fan near me 2) my friend said my voice can't be heard from time to time 3) my mixer monitoring I could hear my own voice too loud but the viewer can't hear a thing. So I was thinking about upgrading to mid-tier because the current item I used is all budget level. Thank you if could see my message.

Thanks, John. No they didn't say but it is definitely amazing how much this stirs up the tech community every time it happens. I suppose in this case it's one of very few things to actually point out as a 'problem' with this mic ;) I always imagine these companies have stockpiles of these older connectors when time passes them by and they have to use them all up before they can update lol. But really, I don't know.

So the cool desktop app controls only for usb in? Or that can be tweaked for the xlr out as well? I’m just wondering if it would make it muddy if tweaking settings and then into like the rodecaster pro aphex settings / filters? Is this worth the money / will sound better than a Samson Q2U into rodecaster pro aphex or about the same?

Adjustable settings/fx are via usb only. And I wouldn’t say that if you have a Q2U that it would be worth getting this too.

Great review. I recently acquired this mic and find it easy to use, however, I'm not sure I fully understand the monitor mix functionality - in practice, that is. Within Garage Band (GB), I initially had the output playback set to system/computer speakers and had the monitor option (in GB) turned "on" so I could hear the output audio. This wasn't ideal, so I changed the setting in GB to output to the MV7 mic. While wearing my in-ear monitors, I could hear the playback as well as my mic voice which produced an echo effect. Sliding the dial closer to the Mic icon in Shure app (vs playback) was more ideal, and I assume this would be ideal for most. I guess my question is this... In what scenario would someone want to hear the playback vs Mic? And specifically in a podcast environment, would output typically be set to the mic, system speakers, or external speakers? I understand it's important to monitor audio for quality reasons, but for podcasting wouldn't it be more advantageous to hear the Mic feed vs playback? Hopefully, my question makes sense. Perhaps I'm a little confused how this setting is used. Thanks in advance!
@RayOrtega
@RayOrtega 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks. You want to monitor your voice 'direct' which is what you hear from the mic and turn off monitoring in GB because with USB you will have some latency (delay) and that's not great cause it tends to be a little behind your words. So you monitor your voice via the mic and monitor anyone you have on a 'call' like Skype for an interview or co-host via software. The output for the software you use to connect with your remote person would be the MV7.
@Mindset4Excellence
@Mindset4Excellence 3 жыл бұрын
@@RayOrtega thanks. Your last sentence answered my lingering question. The computer output for calls/interviews would be the MV7...NOT the computer speakers. That way I can monitor & control audio mix from mic (with headphones directly connected) and computer output.

To my ears the MV7 sounded better using the XLR than the USB. Seemed to have a more "natural sound", the usb sounded gated or something just an odd sound to it. out of the xlr it was close to the SM7B . Overall I though the SM7B sounded just a bit better, more "open" maybe smother highs and upper midrange. thanks for the great review, and taking the time to do a comparison using the XLR out .

Does ShurePLus MOTIVE work by connecting the shure M7 with an XLR cable? How does the pc recognize it? if it is not connected via usb?
@RayOrtega

I think I mention it in the video but I couldn't find it from skimming so the MOTIV app and features are only available via USB since those are digital FX and when you are plugged in via XLR, you're all analog.

Very timely find here Ray! Thanks for the great review. I've been wondering which mic to go with, both for myself but also for a couple of co-hosts I'll be supplying with mics. This is sounding very much like the one. Some of the co-hosts will have different devices to hook it up to. Two of us use macs, and one has an older PC but also has an iPad, and the other I'm not sure of yet. Can the MV7 be used with an iPad in USB mode? Just checked your compatibility link (slap to my forehead! so that provided answers to this one) I'll also be doing some on location recordings using a Sound Devices unit (either MixPre II 3 or 6 - haven't decided yet) and the XLR built in feature is so handy. Hoping to use my existing Sennheiser Lavs at the same time. Just looking for a stand now for the MV7 - recommendations? Our Canadian suppliers don't have the same packages as on the Shure Site, and I'm trying not to spend too much on stands for co-hosts.
@RayOrtega
@RayOrtega 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks. Not sure what kind of stand you're looking for, often it will depend on the setup that the individual wants. I have used a couple different boom arms, mine is quite pricey but Blue makes a decent model that is real clean amzn.to/3gJJHXh or maybe just a desktop stand. A traditional mic stand is a nice way to uncouple the mic from the desk if you're going to be typing etc.

I haven't seen many interfaces that have voice changing effects but with live-streaming being more popular, there are starting to come onto the market. The GOXLR is the most popular one I know amzn.to/3tfHuHf but of course isn't cheap. I don't think their mini version has voice changing but you can google/youtube 'voice changer audio interface' to see if there are some good reviews of more affordable options.

I don't have the 2100x but I do have the original and the Q2U. What you'll hear, I suspect, is that the others are much brighter (more mid-high end). In general, no, it's more sensitive than the SM7B and most preamps should handle it well however it will depend on the preamp at least via XLR. If your mixer or recorder does not have a very good preamp, it might need one. USB is obviously different and doesn't involve inline preamps like the Cloudlifter (I think that is what you're asking about) and is very clean.
