How much does it cost to buy and convert a 1992 Ford E350 shuttle bus into a tiny home? Lynette's skoolie has a full-size freezer, queen size bed, compost toilet with a urine diverter and separate poo container, space for two big dogs and much more. It took Lynette - a single 57 year old woman - almost two years and cost her over $40,000. Was it the best thing she ever did? You better believe it!

I know it's too late but if I could offer a suggestion....I would flip the 3 kitchen windows upside down so they would open from the top. I can't think of any reason why that wouldn't work technically speaking. However, if you're a person that has OCD or issues with things not being symmetrical having 3 windows on one side that open at the top and 3 windows on the other side that open at the bottom might drive you nuts. LOL Great build!! Can't wait to see the "initial" finished version. I say "initial finished version" because if I've learned from watching hours upon hours of self built vanlife/ camper van videos is they are never really fully completed.

I attempted to turn the windows upside down, and though they still fit tight to the frame, the way the sliders were made, water would pour in and there was no way to seal them and allow them to still open. I’ve now put screens on all and I’m quite pleasantly surprised at just how much of a breeze I’m able to create when I turn on the MaxxAir fan.

Going to be a beautiful build. One thing that bothers me when I watch van,bus builds etc is the battery’s propane and diesel inside. That would make me nervous.
@onwardbound
@onwardbound 11 ай бұрын
I agree about the propane and diesel. I will not have any propane in my build (other than those little green canisters for the camp stove) and I plan to mount the tank for my diesel heater outside (do not want the smell inside). I am however installing the batteries inside because they are LiFePo (Lithium Iron Phosphate) and they do not off gas, so are perfectly safe inside a vehicle. Batteries such as lead acid should definitely not be installed inside.

@@onwardboundcouldn't find your KZfaq so I hope you see this... Can't you just pick a couple of windows and flip them upside down? Aren't they simetric?
@onwardbound
@onwardbound 9 ай бұрын
@@r13s I thought the same, but no. They didn’t fit quite right, but the biggest issue is that the window would then be upside down and water would pour in.

No, Lynette, YOU rock! I really am inspired and awed by what you've accomplished, and am proud to call you my friend 🙂 Maybe in a few months we'll do an updated tour with Jack and the other one whose name I can't remember. It'd be so cool to see how your plans change when you actually live in her. It took me a full year to really find my groove in Ruby, and she was a brand new rig. I can't wait to hear how you and Ellie grow together on the road!

You would be better off getting a chest freezer rather than an upright freezer. If power loss an upright will thaw immediately where the chest freezer will stay cold for days if left closed.
@onwardbound
@onwardbound 22 күн бұрын
My original plan was for a chest freezer, but couldn’t make it work space wise. I have lost power (my inverter blew and took several days to get a new one installed), and the freezer contents stayed fully frozen for over 24 hours before I was able to plug back in. I’m very happy with my choice and it’s been working perfectly.

Good idea on the bed. Maybe I'll do that for my bus so I can access the batteries and fold it up on the back for a couch. I've seen people use lattice for the bed slats.

My composting toilet was a bucket and I never used a diverter -- you'll end up spending so much time cleaning it, it's just not worth it (for me). I tried pretty much any and all things I could think of to absorb moisture and kill the smell..... but man, there ended up only two things that truly worked: potting soil or straight-up peat moss. That's it. Peat moss worked better than the potting soil, but it was darned good as well. Both are inexpensive, lightweight, and the result was zero smell...... and I could go a whole week, with a resulting football - basketball sized piece of trash to throw away. I did use a pee bottle for urine, but I'm of an age, and female, so holding the urine (even after I've already used the bottle) just wasn't going to happen. Yes, it made things stinky until I found peat moss. I deal with IBS, so eliminating urine first wasn't always going to happen, right? I never had to worry about that after peat moss -- if I couldn't avoid it, I would just not worry over it -- I only made sure there was an extra handful of peat moss to absorb it. You have to try it to understand how different it is to anything else -- I promise you'll be glad you did.

Tried that and because of the way they are built, the water just poured in. If I sealed it to stop water infiltration, the windows would no longer open, so not a viable solution

@onwardbound
@onwardbound 11 ай бұрын
That was my original plan. However, as I removed them to clean them up and reseal them all, I quickly realized it wouldn’t work. #1 - the part that opens would be upside down and not seal properly, allowing any moisture to just flow in. #2 - they didn’t fit as flush against the curve when turned upside down, so likely would have leaked horribly. #3 - the “weeping holes” that aid drainage would be at the top of the window, not the bottom where they should be, so therefore wouldn’t be able to do the job as intended. After much consideration and mucking about, I realized that it just didn’t make sense to attempt it.
