We discuss Behr's childhood in the Bronx, his childhood dream to be a horse, pursuing a career as an actor, this thoughts on mentors, running off to deep cleanse in Europe before heading to LA and building his epic writing career. He talks about his stint with Star Trek: TNG, his time on Star Trek: DS9 and his documentary about that time: "What We Left Behind". His unpublished novel and the Spanish Civil War. And now,DS9 is widely regarded as the finest Star Trek every written! A testament to Ira, Robert Hewitt Wolfe, Ron D. Moore, Rene Eschevarria , and the rest of the writers room! They are the heros of DS9! Ira even reunited with Ronald D. Moore for the first two seasons of Outlander in 2014.

It sometimes suffered in some of its' stories from not having any women in the writer's room, but beyond this simple failing it was sublime. I am so, SO grateful that it was generally ignored by the higher-ups at Paramount, even though I know that was hurtful to the cast & crew at the time. But the show would have suffered greatly for their attention... instead they made something that will endure the test of time, and it still found its' audience, little by little, drop by drop... and the drops become an ocean.

@@miller-joel I thought all the characters had decent development. My one issue with Ira was that he seemed more interested, honestly, in making political points rather than telling a good story. That was really obvious in the What We Left Behind documentary. Fortunately there were other writers, like Ron D. Moore and Robert Hewitt Wolfe to keep him more grounded. The whole dream idea was awful and I am glad Rick Berman nixed it!

@@miller-joel I did watch Babylon 5. It was ok. The writing on DS9 was superior in my opinion. The characters were awesome and frankly, it was just a more enjoyable show all around.

I was incredibly surprised how much I enjoyed this episode. You just don't realise, as a fan, just how much blood, sweat and tears goes into writing, re-writing and sacrificing time with loved ones to produce our beloved shows. Ira has such a varied writing career, and written his own ticket, literally, into theTrek hall of fame.

This is way off topic but last year I had Covid & my living room & apartment turned into a total mess where nothing got done, nothing got cleaned & last month I got sick again with bronchitis because of all the rain here in Northern California because the rain spreads pollen around & I am allergic to grass and keep getting sinus infections & having breathing difficulties. So this morning I finally said "F*ck it. I need to clean up this disaster area ! " and started putting away laundry, throwing stuff out and hanging up shirts & listening to this episode while having my usual breathing issues allowed me to focus while in the background this fascinating writer whom I had never heard of riveted my attention & I thank God that you people created the Shuttlepod. This month I turn 71 & at times even getting out of bed can be hard with my physical issues, like 2 fractured kneecaps, vision issues, breathing difficulties and weight. I fell on the escalator on BART our local subway 17 years ago and gained 125 pounds because I was on crutches for a year and the medical plan refused to pay for surgery on my shattered right knee. Now I will be finally getting both knees replaced, have lost 60 pounds and finally getting an electric mobility scooter because it hurts like hell to walk, go shopping, etc. But your video cast allows me to think about what I have to get done and after listening I finally got everything folded, put away or hung up and I really appreciate what you do & how it enervates me & helps me finish until my back and knees tell me its time to take a break. Thank all of your for presenting the guests and unlike the other fans, I LOVED Vic Fontaine because I was a friend of Mr. Frank Sinatra (Sr. Can you say that of the Chairman ? ) & the first time I heard Vic sing I thought it was Mr. Sinatra singing ( I never called him Frank and he called me " the Kid " when I was 16 and living in Old '60's Vegas.). I miss the hell out of him.

Glad to hear you are getting better. I will be 66 in June so I'm right there with you. I've been losing my teeth due to receding gums and stuff like that effects your health. I also need to get a PSA test cause some weird stuff is going on below my stomach. Originally thought it was just a hernia. Now I think it might be something far worse. 😮😮😮

Ira is right, don’t listen to criticism. I wasn’t online much in the early 90’s and didn’t hear any bad words. All I know, is that me and my mum loved that show. I think we should all take a step back from the hysteria of public opinion and enjoy something as an individual.

@@miller-joel If you pander to the loudest voices among the "fans" then you are a Yes-person... Giving "fans" what they want is like feeding children nothing but candy. Given the examples of the criticism from back in the day which are mentioned in the DS9 doc, I'm glad they ignored it.

I told my adult sun about it. He and I binge watched Deep Space9 on bootleg DVD’s I’d night so we’d have something else to watch while we were in Italy one summer; he loved the series. When I told him about the doc showing one night only in the local mall in Colonie Center, he wanted to go. It was really good, but a bit long. I’m still hoping that Paramount will take those fuzzy in take shoes, go back to the film originals and remaster and put special effects in in HD or UHD and finally make them available!

Love the show and Ira. Being able to hear his take on the inside scoop of TNG and DS9 is a treat . Dom changing the subject from some real interesting backstory on "Sarek" to" sooooo you grew up in the `50`s ?" Was really jarring and strange as we were getting into some really fascinating information on how legends that are now gone worked. Ira has some personal experiences with actors that are now lost to time and i cherish the opportunity to hear first person experiences with them. If those who know don't tell these things no-one will ever know them.

I've always felt like Ira is the most interesting Producer from any of the trek shows. Love what he brought to DS9 and how he wrote to bring the best out of the characters and the actors. His interviews on the 7th Rule are fantastic. You can tell he cares about the actors and the people he worked with. Wish he had gone on to help with Enterprise and Voyager. They could have used him. A true Trek Icon!

I remember my girlfriend being disrespected in a male dominated industry. I quoted Garak’s lines from DS9 to Ezri Dax about believing in one self and owning who you are. This incredible, strong, and honorable woman I call my wife 19 years later is in a leadership position in the same male dominated industry. She definitely owns who she is now. Boy, do I love love her! The writers and actors of DS9 taught me how to love, lust, worship, and respect strong women. DS9 also has taught me to empower women. Thank you to the writers, cast, and crew of DS9 for that.

This (fantastic) episode really highlights the true power of this podcast's format. Over the years, a lot of mythology has been built up about what happens behind the scenes and it is really nice to see the hosts and guests talk more bluntly and more honestly about the realities both behind and in front of the camera. We as fans need this kind of content. It gives us perspective and lets us view it with a bit more honesty. The fanbase has spent years building up certain convenient, emotionally cathartic narratives and it is good to see those narratives put under the microscope.

Incredible summary after hearing from Armin, Nana, Cirroc, Nikki, Andrew and Michael talk about the atmosphere on DS9, and not really completely explaining it, to have Ira encapsulate it perfectly by talking about the shows handling of Avery Brooks. Wow, I definitely wasn't expecting to hear you guys talk about the Spanish Civil War with the great Ira Steven Behr introducing the topic. You see, apart from being a big Star Trek nerd and a fan of your show, I happen to be spanish. Here is a little story I want to share with you regarding the Civil War... I'm from the Canary Islands, a small archipielago next to the west coast of Africa that politically is part of Spain. Once the conflict began, in many areas where Franco's rebellious side had prevailed (as was the case in the Canary Islands) all foreigners were imprisoned. My grandfather was born in Cuba almost by chance because his parents had emigrated there, so he was imprisoned. In prison they put a paper in front of him declaring that he was going to fight voluntarily for Franco's side and ordered him to sign it. My grandfather refused, and after beating him they signed it with an X and indicated that he was illiterate, which caused my grandfather to have to fight in a civil war for a cause in which he did not believe. Fortunately, even though the bad guys won, my grandfather survived the war and lived many years. I'd love to have the chance to meet you in person! Greetings from the Canary Islands 🖖🏻🇮🇨

Connor, Dom, Erica and Mark - congrats on this weeks awesome episode! What an outstanding get for the Pod! Ira was a really cool guest, very forthright and candid, not afraid to speak his mind. Learning about how he got his start in the world of Trek was really interesting, I can only imagine how nerve wracking his first day on TNG was, being thrown into an unfamiliar pool and being told to start swimming. I quite enjoyed his perspective on fandom as a whole and how he refused cater to them, I'm happy he held firm and wouldn't let them effect the outcome of DS9. Glad he wasn't afraid to admit that he'd made some mistakes when he was on the show, I feel like people who write for big franchises like Trek are less likely to admit when they had shortcomings so I appreciate his honesty in that regard. All in all, another fun episode! I can't wait to see what next week has in store. Happy Shuttlepod Sunday, one and all! ☺🖖💚🍃

I rewatched the 3-part season 2 intro again, after watching this interview ("The Homecoming," "The Circle," "The Siege"). Those were fantastic episodes. Great character moments; great action. It felt consequential, even though it was about "Bajoran Politics," lol. Some of the best episodes to come out of the early seasons. Great job, Ira, and everyone involved.

Loved this.. Ira.. we need a new trek with you at the helm.. bring back trek with DS9's potency and grit... It is also awesome to hear behind the scenes about just how difficult those shows were to make back in the day. Hopefully we never put actors and crew through those times again.. Also I hope all writers get paid what they should be paid not just the writers guild members... people got to eat and pay bills.. much respect..

I was not a fan of DS9 on first viewing,but after revisiting it in syndication I realized what a gem it actually was...nothing is without flaws,and there were a few things that I wish they had not done in the storyline,but all things considered for me I would place it in my top 3 sci-fi series of all time along with Babylon 5 and Stargate SG-1....

you had to be REALLY committed to follow it or of course you wouldn't enjoy it-- in my area it was only syndicated at like 2pm and 11pm and sometimes they would play stuff in the wrong order or cut the end of the last season off... I had to pirate on Napster with dial-up internet to follow the story-- each episode took me well over a week to get.

@PrismPyre I was lucky that it was syndicated at 630 on Sundays after it moved from the weeknights...I think it was Wednesday at 9. I had to record them on the old VHS timer! Mom still has them in her basement, she still holds on to them just in case the internet "explodes" and we can't stream anymore and we go back to "tapes and regular TVs"

And he'll yeah to B5! Now that show struggled with time slots! The third season came out when I was a freshman in college and I made my buddy I played football with join me and watch it at the comic shop in there big TV!!! Needless to say it was epic and he liked it and we watched it often together. I recorded lots of the episodes of season 1 and 2 on VHS and we watched the back episodes episodes

@@prismpyre7653 In my country, DS9 never even aired! Luckily one video rental store imported VHS copies from the UK. There were two episodes per tape. I had to literally pay a small fortune to watch the first couple seasons. Eventually I managed to get Sky on satellite (which was in itself almost mission impossible) which aired DS9 and by season 7 I was finally in college in the States so could watch in real-time. We were only two DS9 geeks in the entire dorm and would meet up religiously every week to catch the show. Yeah I'm a pretty hardcore DS9 fan, when there is a will there is a way !

OMG this was brilliant! Fantastic episode, thank you so much! Totally agree with Ira, Casey Biggs was SO good. His character journey was exactly what Gul Dukat's looked like being before they turned him back into a pantomime villain.

WONDERFUL! Love hearing things from the writer's perspective. Another great guest. Can't wait for Manny Coto to be on the show. I have to agree with Ira 100% Social media has been a real bummer where it comes to shows. I've said this many times, that if TNG was premiered today, it never would have made it past the first season. To be fair, fan ire is fairly earned when the source material to a beloved property has been thrown out or changed so much that only the names remain. That being said, as the tremendous success of the MCU has shown (or the James Bond films for that matter), you can change a LOT about a character in a way that is fun, surprising, yet remains true to the character. I think if more studios shared Ira's belief that a writer needs to give the audience what it needs, rather than what it wants, films and shows would be better for it.

Hey all what a great interview! You guys have a real skill at this, and you get better with every new show. And PS I got Paramount + so I could watch Picard season 2 and 3. But you know what? I found myself watching Enterprise all over again. Seeing the cast on screen for the first time in at least 5 years, besides the couple of episodes I have on DVD and watching clips on KZfaq, its like going to a family reunion, seeing old friends, and wishing I could interact with them. GOD bless you all on the shuttlepod show.

I respect him a lot, but I will say I am getting tired of his favorite anecdote (out of all the stuff Gene Rodenberry said) being a thing where he bounds with Rick Berman over their shared revulsion to homosexuality as if that's the paradigm for something that's 'off the wall' and offensive. Gende Rodenberry wanted Counselor Troi to have three breasts.. but *that* is the 'craziest' thing you have to talk about??🤔

Our job is to "give the fans what we think they need, not what they want," is a brilliant line by Behr. As a fan, I can respect that. I guess we (reasonable) fans just want to know that the writers and creators appreciate and like the genre, and aren't here just to deconstruct and destroy. Trek is one of the few intelligent and moving things on TV. Like Shakespeare set in the future. and we don't want to lose that. I have found several episodes of Stange New Worlds to be hilarious, thought provoking, intelligent, and moving. Particularly the episode where Pike realizes the importance of Spock. Great acting by both Peck and Mount in that scene. So the spirit of Trek seems alive and well
