Bob also made another great point that of course there are more remarkable people from Brooklyn than Columbus, GA simply because there are more people. BUT there's also a hell of a lot more opportunity in New York City than Columbus, Georgia. There are prodigious people everywhere, but many of them just never have the opportunity to pursue their passions because they don't live in places with studios, art scenes, etc.

When people call themselves empaths it feels like a weird self gratification / I’m better than you / I’m special thing. But people with high empathy exist and its nothing absurd or supernatural, it’s usually because they grew up in an emotionally difficult household and they over time learn how to read their unpredictable caretaker’s behavior and what mood they’re in. It’s a way to protect yourself from physical / emotional harm.

it's also sort of doing the thing where the "goodness" of your human experience is leveraged on how much affective empathy you have/whether you have any at all. it puts down and others a lot of people, people who are mentally ill, who have personality disorders or are autistic in particular. it also refuses to acknowledge barriers of affective empathy, as if it were some amazing power without any limitations. which is absolutely not true. it also ignores sympathy and compassion, which are both highly important. this culture of weird empathy glorification is harmful in many ways. it then gets noticed and internet empaths start getting called narcissists, just weaponizing the same mental illnesses that empath culture was used to hurt in the first place. i just have a lot of thoughts on this. ableist nightmate cycle lol.

I’ve had a dream similar to what Bob is talking about where the people in the dream will be recognizable and the places I’m at will be recognizable but the people will not be recognizable to the places and vice versa. So for example, I could recognize someone from my adulthood, in a very specific place from my childhood where I know I wouldn’t have interacted with them.

So I don't get sleep paralysis really often, but I'm able to kinda tell it's not real at a certain point, and the way I'm able to end it is if I make it worse??? I can only partway lucid dream; I will be fully aware I'm dreaming and in control of my thoughts, but not fully control my body or the situation. It's one of the most dreadful experiences; feeling so powerless and trapped. Especially trying to wake myself up; it gets me caught in loops, where the dream adapts and I think I woke up but it's still the same dream and no matter how hard I pull it keeps happening like that over and over until I finally actually wake up. Takes a while to ground myself in reality and actually trust my mind again.
@katwebbxo
@katwebbxo 2 жыл бұрын
That's so interesting. I've only had loops happen a few times. Usually I'm not in control of what I want to happen in the dream. And most of the time once I become aware of it being a dream I usually wake up soon afterwards.

OMMG Bob thank you for shedding light on the topic of sleep paralysis! I have been dealing with the SP "demon" for as long as I could remember. I've always had a theory that it was from a trauma response, because in the middle of the night when I was younger I was sexually assualted and my entire body would freeze in the moment of it happening. I would dissociate and have an out of body experience almost as a way of a coping mechanism to protecct myslef. SO in conclusion I feel like the PTSD and trauma have been reoccuring through my sleep patterns in my adult life. One time it was so severe I was in a sleeping position where I was faced down on my pillow and nearly suffocated because I was in the middle of a SP episode and couldn't move my body or head away from the pillow. I always have a feeling of dread in the moment as you described and have no concept of time it feels like in the moment I am going to stay stuck and paralyzed forever. Very frightening and it often makes me scared to go to sleep at night which has given me insomnia in result of that. Anyway I love your podcast and the platform you have created for us all and hope to see you on tour live soon! Love a very long time fan, Marcus

I'm so sorry that happened to you. I've also been struggling with sleep paralysis for as long as I can remember. However, nothing like that happened to me. I do remember being a small child, probably 3 or 4, spending the night at my grandma's house and crying to get her attention (I didn't want to be in the dark anymore after seeing things but couldn't get out of this crib she set up in her living room) and being ignored. That was the earliest instance I can really remember having sleep paralysis. Don't get me wrong, she wasn't neglectful. She just thought it would help me learn to fall back asleep on my own. Well that turned into many years of insomnia and being a night owl to avoid the sleep paralysis lol.

Monet, I haven't looked at hard evidence on empaths in a while so take this for what it is; a youtube comment. But there was research done that about 20% of the population has a stronger mechanism to perceive change in the environment through their senses, or something to that effect. People nowadays call it "empathic", as if they have some other-world ability as to sense or "feel" other people's emotions (or their own) deeply but the truth is it probably has a lot more to do with a sensitive nervous system and mirror neurons. What I'm trying to say is the ability to "take on" others emotions or sense something off isn't a made up concept; it's more in the personal interpretation of the real concept where you find people claiming themselves as "Empaths" or "Highly Sensitive People" or even "Indigo Children". I, personally, just call it science.

I'm the same as Bob except for the not dreaming part. I've had sleep paralysis for as long as I can remember. I hate when people associate it with demons or aliens because there's a logical reason for why it happens and why it feels scary. Also, places in my dreams are often combinations of places I've been to before. Like my current home mixed with my childhood home, for example. It's the same thing with people too. As for lucid dreaming, I've only recently started to experience it but once I become aware that I'm dreaming I usually wake up soon after.

My dream last week I can’t get over. 2 nuns came in my house the back garden door and I was hovering and I pointed my hoover at them. Then realised they were holy women so put my hoover down. I thought they were here to tell me my 96 year old neighbour had died but they came into my dining room,one nun was gone and replaced by a priest who said “so what are you feeling about all this” and I said “about what” and then he said “climate change” so I went on a leftie speech about climate change then I looked out my wi Dow and my dog (an Akita doesn’t like other dogs) was with their dog(A black wolfhound) and the dog pulled a cat off the fence we ran out and took the cat away then that was the end of the dream. I googled so many things about nuns and dogs and climate change and they all come up with different answers but nothing specific. Just over sharing thanks for reading 😅

Bob is so pragmatic it's wild to me. If I was in her position and I had that same wild ass dream not only would I believe it I'd make my mom believe it too! After that. No one could tell me shit. But we're also skeptics in the first place 🤭🤭

I mean.... cats are normally pretty territorial with each other when another cat comes into their space, that’s probably why Colleen and the other cat didn’t get along ...my cat is also a dog person like Colleen lol...

Bob not believing in anything spiritual and rarely dreaming now ...yet having memory of him dreaming vividly and and seeing things coming things to fruition... connection to the fear he felt and the place he refuses to acknowledge that experience because of the trauma. Fast forward -* shuts down any and all belief systems regarding any thing related to the non physical world. Overly vulnerable Emotions included. 🔑💡🎧💡🔑

Lucid Dream and Sleep paralysis gang here to tell you it actually REALLY sucks. My last sleep paralysis "episode" i was just laying not being able to move and i was trying SO hard to yell out for my dad to come wake me up.
