Probably the lens that I use the most and love the most. A little hard to use in the studio but for my wildlife it is AMAZING!!
REMINDER - If you have the dock for this lens Sigma does update the firmware occasionally. Make sure you update it. If you are in town and don't have the dock bring your lens by and I will update your Sigma Canon EF lenses.
Lens amzn.to/2P8gA4e
People have mentioned my comment "It is as sharp as the Canon 600 F4". Why I said this is first from printing hundreds or even thousands of shots from this lens for myself and for clients who have the same lens (many of whom I have focused the lens for them using the dock & micro focus on their cameras) and then also printing hundreds of shots for clients that have the 600 f4. When I print images on my large format printers and you cannot see a difference with the 150-600 over a Canon 600 then to me this makes each lens equal. Even people with the 600 f4 cannot tell what display prints in the lab were printed from which lens. I have had a few people with the 600 buy the 150-600 to add to their kit for the weight savings as they thought it was as sharp as their Canon also. This is from real people, shooting in real life situations and not just using test charts (I have never sold a print from a test chart but sell thousands of prints from real subjects that I photographed with this lens). There probably is a difference in a lab test situation, using a loop, not adjusting the images in post, etc. but I do not sell a test chart image or an unprocessed image. When I sell a print from this lens and the client is blown away by it I know I have it right. Second I have used the 600mm and from the shots I have from that lens I find the Sigma as good, again when compared as photos and not on test charts. Could be a difference but with what I have seen with this lens it would be very little or no difference. Finally this is my opinion and from my experience, take what you will from someone that has been doing this for 35 plus years and runs his own photography business. 😅

I have had this lens for some time and agree with everything you say about it. Mine gave me pin sharp images straight from the box used on a Nikon D500. I used your F9 tip on my Sigma 150/500 a few years back and had the same great results,Always worth experimenting with any lens to find that sweet spot. Well made video,clear and concise. Thank you.

I love my Canon 70-200 2.8 but this is so much better for certain jobs and I don't have to use a 2X converter. I can't believe how I can handhold under the right conditions.

It's a learning thing but everytime I watch this video, I seem to learn or pick up on a few great pointers... Shooting the 150-600 at f/9 (in camera) is one of those things. I watched this video awhile ago and seemed to have missed your point of setting the camera to shoot at f/9. I've taken both my 70D and the lens to a camera repair shop and before the repairman messed with either one, he took the kit outside and shot a few photos. After reviewing them he said there's absolutely nothing wrong with either the DSLR or lens. He even went as far as to say that the sharpness is absolutely bang on.

Thank your for your review, which I found quite interesting. I too, am a Canadian, although I now live in NZ, so I have traded in shooting moose, bears, elk and wolves for birds that love to hang out in the bush. I got the docking station at the same time (as a deal) and have found it extremely useful in keeping the firmware up to date: something I consider important with any gear having that capability. For my particular lens I found the sweet spot to be around f/8 and that is where I commonly shoot with most of my lenses - depending on how dim the conditions are, of course. Like you, I shoot hand-held or with a monopod, and for the same reasons. I have the Canon native 100-400 MkII lens and have used it with the 1.4MkIII extender in experiments to see how it would compare to the Sigma 150-600 - I perceive that the sigma is at least as sharp as the Canon combo, although the 100-400 alone is a bit sharper. I shoot with the EOS 7DMkII, because its tracking system is, IMHO, still the best of any Canon DSLR. I have shot it with my 80D and 90D units, and had slightly fewer sharp keepers. I recently got the EOS R6 and that has been a game-changer: it works perfectly well with the R6 and the standard EF-RF Canon converter, with the huge benefits of animal and human eye auto tracking. Some time back, I got the Sigma 60-600s lens: basically it provides a single lens solution for a day's photography, albeit with a bit of weight thrown in - but less than carrying extra lenses to get the same FL range. It too is an awesome lens and I have been using it on the R6 or my 5DMkIV, with the 150-600 on the 7DII - the latter giving me an equivalent FoV of 240-896mm: which is very useful. I recently got the RF 100-500 lens and that is both lighter and less bulky, and gives me a combination of ILIS and IBIS - so up to 8 stops of stabilization - and it is tack sharp. Without doubt one of the biggest factors in judging the performance of a lens is to consider the final output: the cost required to get superb high resolution, large Fine Art prints is considerably less than for social media, smaller prints or digital device display. For various reasons I do very few large prints and don't post on social media, but these units are more than satisfactory for digital and smaller (say A2-size) prints.

@@deb8183 Hi Deb. I love the 90D. I didn't upgrade from the 80 to 90, but I have heard people mentioning soft focus. The 90D tends to want a faster shutter speed apparently. The ISO looks pretty good to me up to about 3200, which you can cap on the AUTO setting. The grip is also slightly more ergonomic than the 80D - extending a bit further. The battery life is great - using the LP6 that's in Canon's full frames. The 32.5 mb sensor requires high resolving lenses so I would check what lenses are compatible. I'm getting good results with the Sigma Art 18-35mm, the Sigma 8-16mm Ultra wide and the above Sigma150-600mm C. Also, the Canon 50mm STM and the kit lenses give reasonable results. I would like to try out the Canon 85mm L glass to see how that pairs for some outdoor portraits. Possible downsides, only 1 card slot and a bit of learning curve, but a great camera body.

@@primate2744 if you are noticing significant front or back focusing, you can accommodate a bit, by creating a larger Depth of Field, by using a higher F stop. Lighting does not always allow for this, so getting your lens calibrated, wide open, is imperative. .Mine was back focusing a lot from 400-600. I used my own targets for the long range calibration at 50 and 125 feet. High contrast coffee cans at 50 and 5 gallon buckets with high contrast printing set at the edges of the DOF. My target was a high contrast flat sign set at exactly 50, and then 125 feet. Use a DOF calculator to determine where to set your targets on the edge of DOF.

Hi. Interesting review! And I see a lot of nice hardware on your desk there!! Funny. Like you, I owned the 70D. However, I stuck by Canon L glass: the 24/105 mk I, 70-200 f/4 mk I performed outstandingly with it. But... I switched to the 90D ( I use 2 bodies) and... Canon let me down. The 32 Mp sensor in combination with that "Ancient" Canon L-glass was utterly disappointing. So I looked into it, and now I'm sort of standardized on the superb Sigma glass which I find so much better: a 18-35 m f/1.8 Art, an (elder) 105mm f/2.8 macro lens, and I bought the Sigma C 150-600mm f/5 - 6.3 plus the TC 1.4 as a package. I do still use the Canon EF/50mm F/1.8 STM 'Plastic fantastic' or 'Nifty 50' with it, though, because however cheap it may be, it is a fantastic lens!! My 70D's have been transferred to my son and daughter-in-law where they get a second life. On the 90D, even if I bought the Sigma Dock, I didn't have to tweak anything. It just works. However, I mostly use the 150-600 mil + .4 TC as my moon bazooka and I always shoot the moon on a tripod without OS. But as you say, this lens is simply amazing... and the OS is also. I have shot it handheld - though it is a bit heavy - to get shots of birds on a tree or in flight, with the OS on - mode I or II, it depends on the action (but never with OS on a tripod) - and it rendered perfectly sharp shots. I generally use f/8 for it, which for me, without tweaking, is the sweet spot on either of my 90D's. As for the custom modes, I set 1 mode for birds-in-flight in combination with C1 on my EOS 90D, and one for video in combination with C2 on the Canon. As I do not shoot a lot of video, well, C1 rules on the lens and on the camera :). Just my 2 cents, of course. it's no rocket science but all about preference - and, maybe, luck in receiving a well-tuned copy or an OOF-copy. Do I miss the 70D's ? Well, the sharpest pictures are made with my 70D+70/200mm f/4L Canon glass, I can identify them "on sight". But the Sigma 150-600Cmm f/5-6.3 is, in my humble opinion, at least as good. Thanks for this review! And keep on shooting with it. I wish Flanders would provide the same wildlife as Canada, but alas... it doesn't. However, I think the moon is an equally nice subject and, hey, a lot easier to shoot :)

I used the RF 800 and later the Sigma 150-600C on RP and R7. Since i got hands on a fair priced EF 100-400 Mk2... i barely use the sigma anymore. Mostly the 100-400 II and RF 800 F11 is fine and fit both together easily in a small backpack! But as a single lens/body wildlife setup, the Sigma is still awesome and universal, but its already too heavy for my taste (as long time RF 800 user!) The question for me is.... should i sell the Sigma now? Because the 100-400 is similar, just little bit smaller, 200mm less but F5.6 and tack sharp and especially about 400g less which i definately feel in my hands. I just dont know if 160-640mm is enough for birding in long term, 240-960mm on APS-C with the Sigma is just amazing!

@trevor9934 2 жыл бұрын
@@SteveMasonCanada I agree that this body is a bit of a gem. There is a bit of a story for me with this... I was preparing a course on the technology history of photography and I found a double-page spread in Tom Ang's book Photography the Definitive Visual History. He considered it a turning point in digital cameras as it was the first CMOS APS-C size DSLR and dropped the price dramatically, yet rendered outstanding results. Intrigued, I went on line to see if I could find one as a prop for my spiel and found a body on eBay, in Japan. It was unused and the reason was it had been scored during unpacking, creating a deep scratch across the rear LCD - which did not impact its functionality but made it unsaleable. It languished in the store room until they were cleaning out. I got it for a song and then purchased a pristine but non-working body and got my local Canon service centre to make the body good, check it out and clean it. They confirmed it had no use. I was frankly amazed at the quality of the images it delivered for a vintage 2000 camera. I found a review by the late respected Canadian Photographer Michael Reichmann where he delivered a very comprehensive review of it and it's role as a pivotal point in digital photography. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ZrKHhrlnydKsj4k.html He also made the daring claim, often confirmed, that it superseded the quality delivered by the high-end SLRs using top film, scanning and papers to produced prints up to 8x11 and equal up to 11x19in. luminous-landscape.com/d30-vs-film/ Here is the DPReview opinion: www.dpreview.com/reviews/canond30 I found it to be amazingly clear of noise up to 400 and using decent EF glass, it rendered amazing colours and tonal values. For me, it's a keeper!

I bought the same lens a year ago to pair up with my 90D and is a great lens for the money. It is sharper than the Tamron. But, you can't compare it to the 600mm f/4. One other thing, just in case you decide to upgrade your body, I can tell you now it doesn't adapt well onto the RF mount of the R5 which I just bought a few weeks back. Is still useable, but some of the functions don't work such as the FULL focusing option, I have to toggle between 2.8-10m and 10m to infinity.

@@firstchoicephoto There is nothing to it. If you only use the R5 for just one thing, namely BIF alone is worth the money. All you need to do is put the bird in the frame, the focusing squares overlay will latch onto it and it will be sharp. The hit rate is miles higher than any DSLR. I love it when I am shooting overhead raptor BIF type shots. You can just go on the tripod and shoot all day. And if you use the electronic shutter, with the right lens you are getting 20 fps. DSLR is probably better when you are trying to thread the needle if you will, shooting small song birds in between branches. It is easier to follow a moving bird in dense cover.

Hey man ! This is my dream lens to have for my birding photography but unfortunately I have a Sony and to my knowledge I don’t think it is made in a Sony mount size , do you possibly know if there is some sort of converter from a Sony mount to a canon mount so I could get this lens ?

If it is a Sony E mount I hear you can use the MC-11 adapter if you buy the Sigma Canon mount. Check it out with a camera store you trust before buying to make sure it works with your camera body.

I have a friend that uses the 6D, he loves it and his work is great. It is full frame so for more reach maybe look at getting the 1.4 Teleconverter. The Canon 100-400 is a great lens as well. Version II is better than version I for dust, version I was a dust magnet. As sharp as the Sigma but of course a little less reach as well.

Hi , thanks for lesson ! I also use this lens paired with 70D, aperture from 7.1-9.0 depending on the amount of light and depth of field. I tried to adjust the focus accuracy, but it seems that my kit does not need it, it has the best accuracy values at zero, without shifting somewhere at all focal lengths and at any distance to the subject. If I try to set the value to + or -, it doesn't better, it only gets worse. This lens has one serious problem, it poorly shoots anything over 30-35 meters at 600mm. Unfortunately, cheaper technology does not cope with atmospheric influence.
@firstchoicephoto
@firstchoicephoto 2 жыл бұрын
I have switched to another of my 70D's and did not need any of the on lens calibrations for that body. Did use a small Microfocus adjustment on camera for that lens. I don't know of any lens in any price range that can deal with atmospheric issues.

@@firstchoicephoto Perhaps you are right. I just read a lot on various forums that the original fixed telephoto lenses are better at conveying the details of distant objects, in our case this is everything beyond 30-35 meters.

thanks for this video. I am looking to get into wildlife photography, specifically for birds and am trying to sort out what lens and camera to buy. I have some photography experience, however from long ago. I understand the importance of focal length, image stabilization, aperture etc. this lens seems like a great option in terms of price point, functionality, and portability -- however i am concerned with the learning curve of course. What camera would you recommend to pair with this lens?...from a beginner but aspiring photographer? thanks so much, Marisa
@firstchoicephoto
@firstchoicephoto 2 жыл бұрын
Because of the increase in focal length I would go with a crop sensor. I am a Canon guy so I would suggest either the 90D or (and it is hard to recommend this one 😂😂 ) a mirrorless like the EOS R. Consider what camera type before spending money on the lens.

@@firstchoicephoto I'm not sure why you scoff. I use this lens with the Canon EF/EFM adaptor on an M6 II, which is the mirrorless version of the 90D. Given my physical handicap, the ergonomics of the M6 II just works better for me for day-to-day use. When I want to do wildlife and birds, I use the Sigma 150-600 on a tripod, and I'm impressed with the results.

@firstchoicephoto
@firstchoicephoto 3 жыл бұрын
I have used it for video and it does work, and pretty good at that. That being said you will need a very good tripod and if you want to do any panning you will need a fluid head or gimbal otherwise it will be jerky, especially at 600mm. Also if you are recording sound get the mic well away from the lens as it is VERY noisy when focusing. When I used the built in mic it was deafening, when I uses a shotgun mic on the hot shoe it was better but still loud. So I moved the mic well off camera and the sound was perfect.

@@firstchoicephoto Thank you for the detailed response. I use the inbuilt mic quite a lot. It might be a bit too noisy for me. I have a rode ball mic but I`m not confident to use it. Used it on once and didn`t get any sound at all lol. I need a simple stabilize lens for videos mainly.

I got into photography and freelance writing almost four years ago. My Canon T7 has a 75-300mm lens which is very good but wildlife photography requires a bit more. You are not going to walk about with a big lense like that .. on yer camera at a wedding LOL My gripe with the lense .. is that i would prefer if the lense Digital Auto zoom .. instead of it being manual because speed is paramount when it comes to certain targets . And the lense has a tendency to move out of focus if you don't lock the lense if you are carrying it . More you use it the slacker the lense barrel becomes .

From the generation point of view I would say the T7i would be better than the 70D, but I would rate the 90D higher than the T7i. That is not taking into account the fact that the 70D is suppose to be a higher end camera (???) but I would still stay with the T7i or the 90D.

I do the same thing. If a full moon you can handhold camera and lens but a tripod is even better. Try underexposing the moon, that tends to give more detail. Also try and keep your exposures shorter as if you use too long of an exposure then the moon will move.

I can never justify the price that Canon puts on their lenses... Sigma is an incredible lens manufacturing company and if I'm not mistaken, it's Canon's biggest competitor. The ONLY thing that Canon is good for is that their lenses don't require fine tuning after sale - as far as I'm aware.

Not a lot of suggestions but a gimbal seems like the way to go. With my lung condition I shoot from my vehicle a lot using a beanbag in the window. I have a friend that had a gimbal mount made for his window as he has mobility problems. If using a tripod I would suggest a heavy one and possibly one with weights. I know it seems like a pain to carry a heavy tripod and weights but if you are out for a while it is worth it.

I'm surprised that even people who are professional photographers still think that their focal length will increase if they have an APSC camera... Nothing will increase! This is only the equivalent, i.e. the image that a lens with a larger focal length would have when placed on full frame... thus giving a narrower angle.
@firstchoicephoto
@firstchoicephoto 5 ай бұрын
Let's see you shoot at 150mm on a cropped sensor then tell me that it did not change the focal length by using a cropped sensor. It is splitting hairs to say equivalent or not. It changed the usable focal length of the lens end of story.

It is became extra reach when looking through electronic monitor such as live view or evf on the mirrorless and the resulting image, but its not became an extra reach on the lens itself or looking through ovf because its just not possible the sensor crop factor will affecting the lens focal length or ovf phisically, wish im not that broke to have this lenses 😢

@@firstchoicephoto Nothing has changed... The APS-C sensor is smaller than the FF, so it will not record the same image as the FF because the image will be cropped. What if it's cut off? And if it is cut, it will also have a smaller angle. The size of the object being photographed will not change because we have the same lens with the same optics.
