Happy New Year man! Awesome follow-up and can't say I'm truly surprised. If I were going to (for some reason) try to play devil's advocate for the native canon, I guess I could argue that the slower focus could play into a more cinematic rack focus effect with the touch to focus af... but only if that were actually consistent.. and not really lending strength for photography.. so man, I got nothing- sure the size is a slight win, but I think you kind of showed it to be a wash even at comparable price, and with the discrepancy, lens hood, and other variables... sigma 1 canon 0. Thanks for another fantastic review!! Given that I only have a nifty fifty and canon adapter and had been thinking about adding the viltrox in to fit this approx focal length, this is STILL a tempting buy now instead, when I didn't even have it on my radar. 16mm first, but you got me thinking! Keep up the great work out there!

Couple things: i was surprised you didn't notice the HUGE difference in clarity on the car's break light when zoomed in at 14:10. Maybe it's because i'm on a 4K display, but i couldn't see the tiny holes of the break light in the Sigma picture until you stopped down to around f/5.6 (partially visible) to f/8 (totally visible), whereas on the Canon lens you can see them all from 1.4 on. I think this is what's contributing to the creamier bokeh on the Sigma. Also the color disparities btw lenses in this particular shot are really evident on the brick wall in the background. The Sigma definitely looks flatter to me. Anyway, awesome video!

Thanks for the great review! I've been really interested to see these two lenses compared since the EF-M mount variant of Sigma's 30mm lens came out. One thing you didn't mention in your review is what I think might be the greatest weakness of the Sigma lens- longitudinal CA. You can see it most clearly in the color fringing around the the wristwatch in the convertible when shot at f/1.4 and f/2. The test photos you took didn't have a lot of contrasty backgrounds and foregrounds, so the review methodology didn't really expose this weakness. Maybe you could take a look at it in a follow-up video and see whether or not it changes your ultimate verdict.

In other, stricter tests, the Canon lens is significantly sharper edge-to-edge, when wide open. I even noticed a decent sharpness difference wide open in this comparison. In Australia, there's almost $200 price difference, so the Sigma is way better value.

Sigma 30 mm was just the lens for me. I have a canon M50. I am on the cheaper side but nifty 50 (canon 50 mm) is just not good enough after seeing its comparison with 32mm ef-m. 32mm is amazing with sharpness but a little expensive too. Sigma I got was around half the price. It fits both my depth of pocket and the expectation of quality.

@@mehdiazad75 hello I own the m50 in lowlight you will need a fast lens. maybe f.2.0 would do the job in anything else as far as photography it is really good for its price I would pick it over the 80D that my buddy has. It is light weight, small, and has the same sensor as the canon 80D. A down side of it is that it has few options for lenses but pair it with an adapter or speed booster youd be fine. I use my m50 mostly for photos.

In my experience, Canon STM lenses focus significantly slower with AF Servo enabled in video mode than in still photo mode. This does not happen with my non-STM Canon lenses. This appears to be an intentional feature to reduce lens motor noise and give smoother focus transitions with video. The STM lenses can be made to focus quick while recording video with a half press of the shutter button. I suspect that the Sigma lenses focus quicker in video mode because they don't support this Canon smooth and quiet AF servo "feature". I'd like to see Canon implement a feature that lets me choose whether I prefer quick or smooth/quiet servo autofocus in video mode.

Exactly. I asked him and he said they focus the same speed in photo mode so it's clearly intentional and for me it looks more cinematic on the Canon.

On the Canon 80D and other Canon DSLRs you can select from 10 focus-pull speeds, so on an M-series camera they must default to a particular non-adjustable speed, which happens to be slow LOL.

FYI Just posted a video with adjustable video AF on the m6 mark ii. Sigma is fast and accurate. 32 is slow even on the fastest settings and will go the wrong direction in low light when hunting when a subject is in minimum focus range.

Interesting point about AF Servo. Is there a way to set AF faster without half pressing as I often turn on the camera and then sit in front of it. Wouldn't be able to half press and be in the shot at the same time.

Nice review , I just bought the 16mm from sigma 2 days ago thanx to you. Still thinking for this one , I have already 50mm + speedbooster, for the 50mm field of view. Really enjoy your content and find it very informative and practical. Did you ever face issues with the sigma 30 1.4’s autofocus during photography.? I keep hearing on line that it only nails the focus 70 percent of times and 30 percent of times you are left with major focus issues.

Woa, 70%, no haven't had that much inaccuracy but it has other IQ issues that makes me use the Canon 32mm for photography. I love the Sigma 30 for video/vlogging however

One thing in favour of the Canon is that it has less chromatic aberration. 17:27 look at the top left at the edge of the seat: the Sigma has stronger green fringing (behind focus plane) 17:49 look at her watch: the Sigma has stronger purple fringing (in front of focus plane) This is most noticeable at very contrasty out of focus edges at wide open apertures.

The most important part of a fast lens is how sharp it is wide open, no? So the gap is sharpness will be even wider on a high res camera like the 32mp M6 II.

I prefered the sharpness and the perspective of the canon lens more, but the skin tones on the sigma are so damn good.

Sharpness and focus is harder to correct in post, as is the chromatic aberration and barrel distortion that Sigma tends to do. It's easier to warm up skin tones in an editor. So if money wasn't a factor, I'd choose the Canon, especially bc it's much more compact & not as heavy.

Very thorough. Canon should really have been tested with the limiter, as it’s there for a reason. On the portraits in the car, the canon appears a bit sharper at wide apertures. However, both are excellent for the M mount format. I’m torn between the two but as all my other M mount lenses (4) are Canon I’d be tempted to go for the very highly rated 32mm. However, my 1990 28mm EF on the convertor is very close on focal length but slower and noisier on video. Still good for photos. The original 50mm EF 1.8 with the metal mount on the convertor is superb on sharpness, but again noisier on focus.

I over all like the Sigma lens way more.. The Canon skin tone gives such a yellow color and i don't like that at all. And i really need a lens wich is very acurate when it comes to fast focusing. So I order the Sigma rn!! 😊

Great comparison, but I think you were a little biased towards the "new" one ;) For me there is more fringing on the sigma and "close bokeh" looks like a weird halo (the shopping bag in one shot, the clock in the other and also the logo you talk about). I also think I like the overall rendering and highlight rolloff of the canon a little more, but that is hard to describe and easy to be biased about. With the canon the skin looks a little "smoother" lighted while the sigma looks more like there are light and dark areas. There are many good and valid points though, so overall very good job!

Yeah I was a bit, although I've been blaming it mostly on my video focus. I was very excited about the video AF performance. In hindsight I should have made invididaul points on the IQ to show why the 32mm is the photography winner. Although with the sigma 56mm video I just finished I'm not sure how often I'll use the 32 for portraits anymore.

Nice review. In my opinion you should review some more aspects like minimum focus distance, Bokeh balls, CA, corner sharpness. The Canon is the first lens I’m using for portraits where the head is in the corner without cropping. It’s incredible sharp at f1.4 in it’s corners. The sharpness at minimum focus distance is also fine. I’m cropping for usable macro shots. In my verdict are this points why I spend more money for the Canon.

He used auto white balance. So the white balance is different for every single picture. I would guess he also shot in jpg (but I skimmed through the video)

It's interesting, I have a personal dislike for focus limiting switches to improve auto focus speed on a lens at this focal length. I think it is useful on a macro or perhaps a long telephoto but on a short prime like this, it feels simply like they are trying to compensate for a mediocre focusing system in the lens. This is kind of proven when you show the speed difference with the Sigma. It's a switch you shouldn't need and just one more thing to think about. Thanks for the review, I have an M6 MkII and am considering both but with the Sigma 1/2 the price of the Canon here, its a no brainer. John Pouw - NZ

Yeah, I agree with your pov. The 32mm switch helps minimally with a painfully slow AF when shooting video with a very thin DOF.

When comparing focusing, I thought it is characteristically Canon's algorithm to smoothen out focusing in video mode? What about in photo mode? Please clarify this.

For sure the Canon 32mm is completely different in photo mode vs. video. Just as fast and snappy with AF when shooting photos. The issue is in video mode it can be painfully slow especially when going from minimum focus range to background. There is no option to speed this up at all. If they want to make it functional for vloggers they need to either make it optional or speed it up a little bit. The sigma had a decent speed overall for vlogging with video AF.

Great video, thanks! I couldn’t help but notice some purple aberrations , especially against white. Like in the photo of the woman with the white beanie. Were you shooting in raw? Does shooting jpeg allow the camera to correct this?

Was shooting JPEG with corrections on. The sigma is known for having a lot of chromatic aberration wide open. Goes away around a few stops up but then so does the thin DOF. When it comes to photos the Canon 32 wins.

I already have canon m50 with the kit lens ef -m15-45mm. I shoot fashion content in door (hauls, review fashion items) and review products and post pictures of fashion inspiration. Do I get the sigma 30mm 1.4 OR 16mm 1.4.

Is your content on a different channel? I was going to take a look at your general composition but didn't see any vids! Lens choice for fashion review will depend on your work area and the look you're going for. If you watch my Sigma 16 vs Canon 22 review you'll see the amount of barrel distortion you get from the 16mm. It's slight but present. Considering how particular fashion is I'd assume you wouldn't want barrel distortion present at all. The Canon 22 or Sigma 30 would both be great options for hauls, with the big difference being how far back from the camera you'll need to stand for a full body shot. The 30 will require you to have a large sized room or hallway to get a full body shot. Can be closer on the 22, much closer on the 16 except with some barrel distortion.

I have a more recent video with AF speed adjustments on the m6 mk ii and you can see full difference in designed AF speed between the lenses. The canon 32 is just designed to be much slower with AF video

Canon costs only 90 bucks more, and is smaller and lighter. As far as durability and resale value I have no idea but I feel like Canon probably holds value more in the resale market. That being said I'm curious how fast the autofocus is in picture mode, because I like the slow cinematic focusing in video mode but obviously I'd want as fast as possible focusing in picture mode.

The canon: + sharper wide open + no distortion - pricier The sigma: + slightly better colors + slightly smoother bokeh + cheaper - crazy distortion - not so sharp wide open - a little heavier If the bokeh on the canon was as creamy as sigma's, I'd have no doubt about which lens is best - Canon. The distortion and the lack of sharpness of the sigma at 1.4 are deal breakers. The 56 and the 16mm from sigma seem much better than the 30mm

So for a first lens purchase it would be better to spend $75 more for the prisma 30mm rather than the 50mm + speedbooster combo. Everyone agree?

That's what I'm guessing as well. While the 50mm seems pretty nice, the focal length seems pretty restricting. The 30mm I guess offers more versatility, and a great quality overall, plus nice bokeh. I'm not a pro, but that's what I understood from my research

I believe you are bias towards the sigma..nothing wrong with that. However, all over reviews I have seen with these lens compared the canon comes out on top in relation to sharpness.

In photos the 32mm definitely wins. but most reviews out there end on just that. I just find it ridiculous that such a high priced lens has such tremendous video AF weaknesses. Even with the m6 mark ii video I just posted you can see adjusting the AF speed and sensitivity to the highest settings still leaves it slow and inconsistent in low light. That being said for photographers the 32mm has no downside.

ok sigma is softer than canon...but why sigma has always faster shot speed??? i think that sigma is not real f/1.4 ( it is possible that is for example f/1.2 ... and that's why it is softer ... you compare for example canon f/1.4 vs sigma f/1.2 , canon f/2 vs sigma f/1.8 ecc... look the background at your same aperture... it's clear that sigma has a fast aperture and bokeh....)!!!!

The canon has 14 elements, while the sigma has 9. So I would think that there is more light transmission through the sigma lens leading to slightly brighter image.

They autofocus equally the same when taking still photos, but Canon intentionally designed the lens to have slower autofocus when doing video. Why? It's so that the autofocus is quieter. When shooting video with Sigma, you can hear the lens motor moving during autofocus. So it's not that Sigma is "faster", it's that Canon made their lens with a quieter feature on purpose. Slower autofocus also looks more cinematic. The only time quick autofocus should matter is if you need to take a photo & get the shot in focus right away. Luckily, Canon is just as fast as Sigma when it comes to taking pictures. Speedy autofocus shouldn't matter when recording video unless you're recording sports or wildlife.

SIGMA HAVE BETTER CONTRAST. Worst purple fringing. then canon. (look at hat). Other than that nobody will ever see any difference.

@@DriveByReviews When you search for your channel by name on youtube..then always car related channels appears..instead of your channel..thats disadvantage for you.
