Silent Hunter 4 John P Cromwell Tutorial

For Silent Hunter 4--Wolves of the Pacific, this is a constant bearing technique for firing from in front of the target at a 45º angle to the target track. Developed with Nisgeis on Subsim.com in October 2008.
This is typical of my techniques in using simple rules of thumb, quickly executed as much as 30 minutes ahead of shooting. Range cancels out of the equation, resulting in much better accuracy. As a bonus, it includes a tutorial on using an in-game vector analysis using only map tools in the game to quickly set up a constant bearing attack from any angle, not just 45º.
Our techniques use no fancy math, no difficult stuff to impress others. We produce a boom for the beginner, who is just learning to play the game and getting frustrated with how difficult it is. It just doesn't have to be that difficult!

Great stuff!!! i just got my first hit using this method. I can't tell you how satisfying it is. I came back to this game after a very long break (years). I see you have an icon with a sailor at the bottom right. Is that a crew mod or something?

Great tutorial! A bit of an audio synch problem at the end. Your audio is several seconds behind what we're seeing. But the point is still A OK

My recording techniques and computer weren't ready for prime time. I used analog recording with Fraps. Bad resolution. Bad lag. A mismatch between sound and video. I'm much better today but doing videos on astronomy mostly. Every once in awhile I hit on the Flatopian Fanatics. But I will have to load up Silent Hunter 4, renew my proficiency and redo these targeting videos one day.

Hey, we're in the middle of the safe waters off California doing training. We were told the target was presumed enemy and used live ammo just to keep life interesting! The interesting thing about SH4 is that it is American subs, which won their war, in Japanese seas. There are bushels of good reasons that U-Boats were an inappropriate weapon for the Germans, but appropriate for the Americans. I'd go so far as to say that the U-Boats ensured defeat for Germany.

I am Richard Cromwell. My Grand Uncle... Carrier "secrets" that would end the war in the Pacific. He got his men off ship... and sunk dah boat [home]... he could have gotten off ship, but... +Richard Cromwell Thank you for visiting. Your Grand Uncle left us indebted to him in a way that we can never repay. Nisgeis and I carefully selected him as the person this method is named in honor of because this man exemplifies the best of what a human being can be. Knowing that he knew secrets that would result in the deaths of many who would take part in future operations, John P Cromwell willingly sacrificed his own life to save hundreds or thousands. We cannot salute him enough.

excellent tutorial but i have one question . Ive just stated playing this game and have the latest tmo installed. How did you know when to fire the fish ???? you didnt explain that thanks

*+Jason:* You aim the periscope up the firing bearing and hold it there, waiting for the target to line up on the zero mark. Shoot as the crosshair is over the part of the target you want to hit. Usually I'll shoot three torpedoes, 20 yards aft of the bow, amidships, and 20 yards forward of the stern. Remember that with the John P Cromwell technique if the target sees your torpedoes, he doesn't have to turn much into the torpedoes to make some or all of them miss. In daytime get darned close and use electric torpedoes. At night it's not such a problem and steam torpedoes are fine.

What's the name of the mod for the compass rose thing that surrounds your sub? I know it can be downloaded from Subsim. Just need to know the name of it. Thx

That's the 3,000 yard bearing plotter I'm using there. It takes gobs of computer resources because of the way the game uses graphics, so it may slow down your system.

I did find some files on Subsim and downloaded them and JSGME. Not exactly sure on installing/setting it up. I did watch a video on it but he goes so fast I cant see exactly where/how it all goes. Can you do a quick video on this for Silent Hunter 4? Thx

Looking for it a Subsim.com but do not find it among the SH4 graphic mods. Could you please indicate where to? Many thanks for any bit of advice.

Well, from this I could not see any improvement over SH3.....What's the fuss? Pretty interesting & more realistic way of targeting......But how come you did not confirm was "enemy" shipping? Thanks for posting.

@@RockinRobbins13 Either way much appreciated! Just realized this video is 9 years old, wow! I'm an old Aces of the Deep and Silent Hunter II player and just getting back into SH3 and SH4. Currently using the Fall of the Rising Sun mod and really enjoying it.
