Hi there, you may have answered this before. Is this your yard? If so, what is the type of grass shown at 0:14? Do you have to trim it or is it free-growing? Thanks! And thanks for the video. #HomeDepot makes it hard to get a blade replaced there.

When tipping the mower up on it's side, make sure the carburetor is up, otherwise crankcase vent will dump oil into air filter.

Guys here's an extra precaution tip that I hear many others mention! When tilting your lawn mower to the side PLEASE make sure the carb and air filter are facing UP if you don't do this the oil could potentially run into the carburetor and the air filter and both items would need to be cleaned or possibly replaced! So please do this for safety and prevention of extra work! Hope was helpful :)

Only thing I would say is the blade bolt should be tightened to spec. Only way to do this is with a torque wrench. If you just put elbow grease into it, this will keep it from falling off, but it might be too tight and hinder motor performance. Typically bolts in this style of mower need to be tightened to between 40 and 50 ft/lbs. Your manual should have the exact spec in it.

Good video, if you really want to spend a few extra dollars there is a lawn mower blade removal tool that clamps onto the side of the mower deck and prevents the blade from turning. Also, you can tip the lawn mower the other direction so the gas tank is not facing the ground.

another good video. i used to bring blades in but its actually relaxing to sharpen by hand if you have a couple good tools (sharp pal , any tool at 30 degrees). the key is to follow the angle . If you mow often swap out blades after 10-12 cuts, makes a difference . Torque wrench , even a cheap one , is nice because it gives you leverage

Excellent video. I normally change the blade at the start of the season. The lawn mower has no gas in it (store it over winter that way). I remove the oil first (since i replace the oil at the start of the season); replace the blade, add oil and gas and start the fun. That way i don't worry about gas or oil spillage.

You forgot two critical steps: 1). You should ALWAYS pull the start cord slowly until you feel that it’s really tough to pull (full resistance). This places the piston at “top dead center” and ensures that both valves are CLOSED! This prevents most of the oil from filling inside the cylinder and creating a “hydro lock” situation next time you want to start it. It also prevents crankcase oil from running out past the exhaust valve and into the muffler, then onto your driveway. It also prevents oil from entering past the intake valve and into the carburetor itself. 2). When tipping the mower on its side, “which” side vs the other side is CRITICAL. Always tip the mower where the carburetor is up and the muffler side is closer to the “down” (the ground) side. Again, this minimizes large amounts of oil running to a side and out onto your driveway, should some oil leak past the closed (or partially closed) valves. Bonus tip: I like the plastic bag in the gas tank trick, but you should wait until the fuel tank is near “empty” before changing the blade. That is all.

That's a very neat trick using a clamp or grip, especially when changing blades on a lawn tractor, so thanks for showing that. btw, I have a jack for my tractor so I never have to take the deck off. One other trick that I've been doing for years is to dip the bolt in some motor oil. It really helps when you take the bolt off because it stops it from seizing and when reinstalling the bolt too. As far as sharpening, I'm not sure why you think it's so difficult. Although you do need a hand or bench grinder. The angle of the cutting surface isn't overly critical either, and it really isn't that difficult to follow the existing angle, but you also don't want the blade razor-sharp because it will dull much quicker. And even though a "good" file will work, it will take a lot of work and time over a power grinder. The most important thing is to make sure the blade is balanced and there are very inexpensive levels for doing that.

Wood blocks can actually damage the angle of the mower blades because they bite into the wood and can warp as you apply force to loosen the bolt. The vice grips are a great idea. I have an atlas blade removal tool that cost about $10 that is the same concept.
