Hehe, Doug your of this video is "sample title" 😁, fitting Easter egg for a video abt internet problems 😄. You mention about problems about noticing things. I'd like highlight that you need to be very careful of big trucks like others said. I've watched a lot of cctv videos from around the world of people on bikes being crushed horribly by big lorrys. Especially after the pandemic & everybody seems kind of "blur". And the latest cyclist crushed by lorry was actually in the modern bustling Kampung Baru, Bukit Mertajam, Penang. Crushed under a giant lorry too horrible. Have you tried the "directions" button in Google Maps? You can select "bikes" or "walking" for a customized route for vehicle type, slightly better. The rice dishes there is the best. Killer amount of coconut milk & killer fresh chillies. Better then Malaysia alot of the time. Take care. 😊

TBH I actually prefer the video from the GoPro more, it just looks more pleasing. But I guess it's nice that you don't have to aim the 360 in a specific direction.
@PlanetDoug

A GoPro definitely produces nicer quality video. The resolution is much higher even when shooting at simple 1080p. The resolution on video from this 360 camera often falls way below even 1080p. But it's not really that you don't have to point the camera in certain directions. The difference for me is that you simply can't get the same shots at all with a fixed camera like a GoPro. With the 360, it is filming the entire world all the time, and then I can include whatever I want. With the GoPro, I'm stuck with whatever the camera was pointing at. I either get video of me sitting on the bike or of the road ahead of me. Everything else going on around me never ends up on video. I keep going back and forth on what I prefer. I'll switch to the GoPro because I want the simplicity and the speed and the better video quality. But then I really miss the flexibility of the 360 in editing. I know that there was a lot going on around me at the time, but none of it is in the GoPro video.

Hi Doug greetings from Tangerang, 46.46 , I think the time consuming part is the IMEI registration. Getting the prepaid simcard+registering the number should be very quick. If plan to stay 90 days and want to use phone from abroad then have to register the IMEI.
@PlanetDoug
@PlanetDoug Жыл бұрын
That's good to know. In this case, I had no idea what was going on, and I just let the guy at Telkomsel do his thing. And I guess part of the regular routine for those guys at their main office is to register the IMEI. He just went ahead and started the process without asking about how long I was going to stay or anything like that. I don't know what would have happened if I'd tried to get a SIM from a small shop or a streetside vendor. Maybe it would have been simpler. The last time I got a SIM in Sumatra, I got it from a local shop, and they had tremendous trouble setting it up. It ended up taking days to sort out the problems, and I had to get another SIM entirely and a local person had to help me out. I was much happier with this experience of going directly to a main Telkomsel office. I think I just have bad luck doing the small things of life.... 😀

@PlanetDoug

I guess I like places like this. I don't find them depressing at all. Maybe it's because it's just a normal Sumatran town. Most of the ordinary towns and cities I've visited in Sumatra all look and feel like this. And that's kind of what I'm interested in. I guess it would be more pleasurable to head to the most beautiful places and sample the best that Sumatra has to offer in terms of scenery, but that doesn't generally fit well with being on a bicycle. And I don't mind that. On a bike, you don't have the time to jet around and visit all the nicest places. You end up spending your time in ordinary towns like Dumai and Duri and Kandis and Bangkinan, the places that I've visited so far. That's just what happens, and I kind of like that. 🙂

Yes, you are right. I didn't notice at first, but each snack had a little price tag on it. It was their equivalent of the mini-bar. I ended up having to pay for those snacks when I finally checked out. Actually, they just deducted the amount from the room deposit I had given them.

I have one extra inner tube with me. I've used regular patches in the past in quite hot places, and I found that they worked. Luckily, though, I haven't had to do that often. I haven't gotten many flat tires in my cycling life.

I saw the Telcomsel building on the left as you rode past. I was thinking you had reached your destination and would stop but you just went on.
@PlanetDoug
@PlanetDoug Жыл бұрын
These days, I'm accustomed to being lost. I seem to have trouble navigating. But even I am surprised that I missed that building entirely. It was quite obvious. I blame it on shooting video at the time and paying more attention to the GoPro and the bicycle and the road. When I arrived in Dumai, I was looking for a specific hotel, the one I ended up staying in. And I rode past it twice and I even stopped right in front of it to check Google Maps to continue my search, and I never noticed the place. That was pretty funny.

Thanks Doug a great trip around town. Looking forward to some street food videos. I have often found Indonesian food to be more subtle in its flavours by comparison to Malay food
@PlanetDoug
@PlanetDoug Жыл бұрын
This is a few weeks later that I'm writing this, and I don't think I came through for you with any street food videos. I had a snack here and there, and I think I took a bit of video of that, but I didn't focus on it. Of course, even if I had, I don't imagine I would have had anything helpful to say about flavors. Certainly not subtle flavors. That's beyond my simple taste buds. 😀 But I do like the food here. I find it easy here to track down simple filling dishes - like my favorite, mie ayam bakso. I think just the physical effort of being here (the heat, the traffic, occasional cycling) took up most of my energy and time, and I had no energy left over for snacking... 🙂

Maybe if you can find something like an old yard stick. Attaching your GoPro to a small, flat surface like that may work better than a rounded surface like a broom handle.
@PlanetDoug
@PlanetDoug Жыл бұрын
I guess it depends on the mounting system you use. You'd need something that would clamp firmly to the flat surface of a yardstick. There might be something like that out there, but I don't think I currently have anything that would work. I was pleased when my friend suggested using these RAM mounts to attach to the end of a rounded pole. It works really well. I'm surprised at how well it works.

I am on the Nestle Gold and Coffee mate combination for my daily coffee. I find no problem in getting them even in small towns. Of late I have found Farm Fresh milk which has almost zero odour, to replace Coffee mate. This makes the coffee drinking process short as the cold milk substantially reduces the temperature of the boiled water.

That's a good question. Even though this guy registered the IMEI of my phone with customs, there was no paperwork to show this. It's not like anyone would have a way of knowing whether a phone is registered or not. So, I don't really understand what this was all about.

Coffee creamers are difficult to procure in Malaysia or something of a rarity…..like a coelacanth? Are you being cynical or just joking, Doug? You can find them aplenty in Giant hypermarkets (both the superior but more expensive Nestle brand, or the cheaper one sold under Giant’s housebrand. Likewise the Top Value brand sold in all Aeon outlets)! In fact, the 99 Speedmart chain (7-11 bete noir!) sells both the pack of little individual sachet or the 400gm big pack of Nestle Creamer. And you not being able to find pasta sauces Is simply balderbash. The local Prego brand of canned pasta sauces is ubiquitous in Malaysia! The chain of Lotus hyper market (erstwhile Tesco) still stocks Tesco house brand of pasta sauces in many forms, and Giant too (the latter has of late added various pasta sauces under the aegis of Meadows!). The upmarket chain, Jaya Grocer stocks many international brands of pasta (& pesto). Well, mate, Lumpur isn’t exactly a 3rd world basket case! We are far ahead of the Indons in many fields of human endeavour, brother! And why visit Sumatra to eat pasta when their Minangkabau rendang is ambrosial! Enjoy
