made me think of this story: Once upon a time, there was an old man who used to go to the ocean to do his writing. He had a habit of walking on the beach every morning before he began his work. Early one morning, he was walking along the shore after a big storm had passed and found the vast beach littered with starfish as far as the eye could see, stretching in both directions. Off in the distance, the old man noticed a small boy approaching. As the boy walked, he paused every so often and as he grew closer, the man could see that he was occasionally bending down to pick up an object and throw it into the sea. The boy came closer still and the man called out, “Good morning! May I ask what it is that you are doing?” The young boy paused, looked up, and replied “Throwing starfish into the ocean. The tide has washed them up onto the beach and they can’t return to the sea by themselves,” the youth replied. “When the sun gets high, they will die, unless I throw them back into the water.” The old man replied, “But there must be tens of thousands of starfish on this beach. I’m afraid you won’t really be able to make much of a difference.” The boy bent down, picked up yet another starfish and threw it as far as he could into the ocean. Then he turned, smiled and said, “It made a difference to that one!”

For me, the point of being vegan is supply and demand. You vote with your dollar, and if me not buying that bacon and cheese scone every morning is the push that stops a coffee shop from making it, or inspires them to sell a vegan option, people will realize how easy this lifestyle really is. My main goal with veganism is getting more vegan options and less animal products in stores and restaurants, and I'm supporting that with the money I spend! Even if I don't change the world, at least I am doing what I can and I've already noticed it paying off where I shop💗

Same! When I first went vegan, I would ask about vegan options wherever I went, and I know that it wasn’t just me asking about those things because almost everywhere I asked now has more vegan options to choose from. I even found “Follow your heart” and “Daiya” cheeses at Walmart after asking and writing to them about it. They aren’t the healthiest options, but my Mac-n-cheeze is super popular at my family gatherings 👍🏻💚🌱🥑

Cassandra Stevenson I see this happening with milk. I have seen commercials of milk companies bashing nut milk. It was so encouraging to see that that many people are making the switch to where nut milks are now serious competition.

It is very much about supply and demand! All these beef "factories" out there exist, because people eat meat everyday! In fact, you don't need to go vegan, just limit your meat intake to once a week, it's better for you, better for everyone else :)

Exercise and no running. Also no more joint pain, vision better, more energy and can now do handstands and 18 pullups. When I joined the Marines at 17 I could only do a pathetic 3.. I enjoy showing off for my couch potato, smartphone addicted grandkids...lol

In regards to the question about why even be vegan when there are 7 billion people on the planet? I'm going to quote an encouraging part of the Lord of the Rings book because I'm a nerd and it's very applicable :) "“I wish it need not have happened in my time," said Frodo. "So do I," said Gandalf, "and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.”"

I eat whole food plant based for my health first, then the planet and animals. Flight attendants tell you to put the oxygen mask on you first so you can help others. Going Vegan is like putting the oxygen mask on yourself first and you will be helping others. People do not have to get heart disease, diabetes, cancer, obesity......these are all food issue problems that can be corrected by plant based whole foods. Yes going vegan matters for your family first and it will have its impact on the world.

I just started following you. Watching a lot of your videos. Starting to lean towards the veg, vegan eating. Came across this one and want to comment. In my middle 30's I was working with hubby wiring houses. We've always been outdoor active. But the physical work of wiring with all the upper arm work actually gave me a six pack stomach. I have never been a gym person. So that was so kewl to me. Just to say that working at a job can keep you fit. Am 58 now and still have a hard time sitting still. Live in Nanaimo, like to hike around here, but more cougar siteings make me go out with another. Really like these videos of yours, will continue to follow. Thank you

As individuals, we may feel as though we are not making a big difference when we choose to go vegan but when we add all of the individuals together, we absolutely make a difference in the demand for animal products which only serves for the betterment of the world. I felt like it wouldn't matter if I went vegan but now I know that there are millions of other people like me and that's enough to keep me positive and inspired! Keep making the great videos Derek. Now, I can't do anything at all because I'm dealing with a debilitating health condition that I'm trying to heal. I watched a few videos about calisthenics and you started showing up in my KZfaq reccomended list. I watched a few of your videos which I found ok but not mind blowing then, Crystal appeared and now everything makes sense. I'm a 52 yo woman so when I watch the both of you I can easily relate + you are both very cute and friendly. Derek, I really appreciated your speech about veganism and I loved how Crystal further expressed how we all feel about the world WE have created. I'm vegan too, a big hug to both of you. 💖🤗😁😇

People tend not to perceive themselves as an agent of an ongoing process of change (or not-change). A silly example of what I mean: when someone says "sorry I'm late, I was stuck in the traffic" they generally don't realize that themselves are agents of the traffic, being part of it and causing it for other people. Every action that you chose impact someone else directly or indirectly (the footprints!) and as such you must choose accordingly to your values. Some people think they should do something only if it means to save every being in the world or otherwise it is not worth it, but no one has such power and saving one life is just as valued as saving many -- even if it means your own! So save yourselves and live up to your values! Love your videos, Derek. Cheers from Brazil!

Hey Derek and Crystal! This is my first comment although I’ve been bingeing your videos a lot lately. Dude, LOVING your channel man! Have been using your Aloe vera and oregano face moisturiser for a week and it’s awesome! Thanks for all your hard work, really appreciate it 🙏 In regards to the question about does it matter to go vegan, I resonate with the answers you both gave. A story came to mind that I think fits this situation and wanted to share it with anyone who might be reading this… Once upon a time, there was an old man who used to go to the ocean to do his writing. Then he turned, smiled and said, “It made a difference to that one!” Every good deed helps. Going vegan helps! It helps you, the animals, the environment, it shows support for other vegans and people who are curious about veganism. Hemingway, I could go on and on, but think this message is probably too long already… Hope the story might resonate with some reading this and thanks again Derek! Cheers from Norway! -Leif

Hi Derek, just to answer your question. What I believe is that everything starts with 1...or it only takes 1. If everyone had the mindset that "I am just 1 person, so what does it matter?" then NOTHING would ever change. The impact of even just 1 person living this lifestyle saves thousands of gallons of water, animals, land, resources, cruelty, etc. ...."be the change you wish to see in the world..."-Gandhi

Haha. The username with the question about peppers was German which roughly translates to "what kind of cookie(ness)" but it was funny, Derek like "its just a bunch on letter"s and I am like ... "no that makes sense actually". Was an awesome video. As always :)

Hey Derek! I've been plant based for the past three seasons and now in my fourth. I love your video's and yes you and Crystal will have a beautiful home on the coast in the near future. There is no doubt about that. My question is about nutrition absorption and the effect on muscles and ligaments. Can the lack of nutritional intake contribute to muscle fatigue or the dreaded " Tennis Elbow". I most likely caused my own condition by not stretching properly prior to my work out or not using proper form. Keep the awesome videos coming! PEACE!

I love your videos! I was vegan before I found your channel, but you definitely pushed me to a whole other level! Thank you for all your content! Keep up the good work! My question is: What do you think about Seitan? Nutrition wise and also health wise, since it is pure gluten. Love from Germany!

You could use the analogie... that each person is but a drop in the vast ocean. So that may seem insignificant if you approach it from that perspective! Another way to look at is is....without all those drops there wouldn't be an ocean. We can contribute to a beneficial collective consciousness for all by our choices. I know for me... giving up eating animals has been the best decision I ever made, not only for my health but it has also empowered me and I feel at peace and more connected to everything. Ps. Guys, I Love your videos they are informative and inspiring 😃

I scrolled down and wanted to say the exact same thing! I'd like to add, that we are all a drop of water that's moving on a wave, and by changing the course of our drop, we are swimming against the current wave. We are taking other droplets with us though, and if it is the right course, we are contributing to a wave into the other direction. What we do creates a ripple effect throughout society! Since becoming vegan, a lot of my friends who were doubting have started eating vegetarian, or at least eat less meat than they used to. That means that not only am I saving the animals I don't eat, but also causing other people to start caring about the subject. The Great Refusal of all things wrong is a constant and difficult process, but we're doing it!

Derek! I'd love to know your attitude towards ethical clothing? Do you shop ethically wherever possible and where do you get your clothes? I find my consciousness towards these issues have increased the longer I have been vegan as I continue to try and tread more lightly! Thanks for the amazing video as always :D

Here's a question for you, I've found that my palms are constantly getting really painful calluses the more I have been doing pull ups and hanging exercises. Do you still get days where this happens to you? Or will they stop appearing after a while? They've been a real annoying side effect of the workouts. But overall I'm definitely happy to be moving towards a healthier lifestyle! Definitely appreciate all the knowledge you share on your channel!
