I am usually just etching peoples initials and pertinent identifying numbers on their properties using a converted PC psu made into a benchtop power supply, banana plug and connector, and alligator clips. I use the plastic body Q-tips/Ear buds, cut these in halves and slide thin brass or copper rods from K&S Hobby metals that would have a good snug fit into the Q-tip/earbuds body, push the rod into the cotton, soak the cotton in the salt solution, grasp the brass/copper rod with the alligator clips of the power supply and have a re-useable "brush" for etching. I make my own stylus from acetyl/Delrin with the copper/brass rod going through to a banana connector, on the end of it now, Just for comfort.

I think your art is absolutely fantastic! But I also think that your work is worth more than you think. The Mona Lisa and a $10 picture are both painted on canvas, but the artist makes the value. Your art is spectacular. I would recommend putting it on axes which are worth more value than a cheap pen knife.

Hi Kirill! Love your work! Quick question - would the Ferric Chloride method (without the current) work on etching a motorcycle gas tank? I am thinking about removing the paint, cleaning it and then do some sick art on it. Thanks!
@peterlee5535
@peterlee5535 Ай бұрын
I can answer this question for you. Yes! I have done what your are suggesting but on Vespa side panels. They are mild steel the same as most motorcycle gas tanks. I used vinyl decals for putting my design on rather than the paint method here but it is the same process. With a gas tank you will need to keeo it sealed so the ferric chloride doesn't make it's way inside the tank as you don't want to eat away the internal metal. It is very doable tho so long as you use fresh ferric chloride and only use it for similar steel afterwards. Once you use it for etching one metal it loses it's effectiveness on others. Also, you can do a mix of ferric chloride and citric acid which is onown as Edinburgh Etch and alledgedly gives a quicker and smoother bite to the metal. I hope that helps :)

In most mass produced mfg items the minimum markup is 3-5 times the cost as a starting rule of thumb. So for custom made art your price would be on the low side I think. Of course had you also made the knife by hand it would certainly be worth well over $1000 to $2000.00. The better the quality the knife, also the higher the price you could ask. Price on original art is determined by what the buyer is willing to pay - not what we as artists think we should charge. Of course if your dead and your work is now collectible (Like Van Gough), Sotheby's can get you a lot more!! Always sell it for whatever the market will bear. A great job in any case!! Selling hand made art is more about marketing of your product with a mystique than creating it. Look at Andy Warhol, much of his stuff was total garbage - just all hype and demand he artificially created until the hype he created paid off, took off and made him famous. After almost anyone can screen print a Campbell' s soup can!! Promote your self as unique, different, etc. Promote the "rarity of your work", "build a mystique around your self and your work" convince people your work is rare, collectible, hard to get and the collectible price is going up while your output is going down. Scarcity created demand. The price collectors will pay for your work will skyrocket. Better to get rich when you're alive than after you're dead!! You've got the talent and skills, maximize them!!
