Simracing is difficult. Learning how to drive fast takes time, dedication and persistence. Assetto Corsa Competizione is one of the best simulations with highly sensitive aerodynamics that want to be respected. Telemetry, such as motec helps with analyzing car behavior and finding major issues in the car setup or driving style. Special sim racing hardware also helps with becoming better, but certainly is not the solution to your problems. Load cell pedals offer better feel. Stronger but most importantly more detailed force feedback of e.g. direct drive wheels offer more immersive sensations. Though I know and I've seen throughout the years, people with entry level hardware perform on top level.

With videos like yours and your ability to explain, I begin to feel confident and capable of explaining to myself the different behaviors of the car. Thanks Nils !

Thank you for this video. This is the explanation I needed. Even though I simrace for over a year now and don't have much free time, I consider myself a safe beginner to drive with, who can consistently do slow lap after slow lap. And afraid to touch the setup of the car because I don't know what I'm doing. I drive only McLaren 720S and this has helped me understand the behaving of the car under different scenarios (fast corners, heavy braking and turn in,...). After watching a lot of "setup videos" this is the only one that will stay in my head.

This actually works. I did not know you can independently lock the downforce dynamic on the rear making it a static height. I did what you said on the Bentley at Spa and did a 2:18.780 a 2.3 second increase, I had to stiffen the front to stop the over-steering in corner 15. I am a contender now; Thanks.

Would love to see a video from you explaining when and why you would change one suspension setting over another (eg. Wheel rate instead of bump stop rate. Possibly with on track examples.) Explaining the benefits/drawbacks of each setting individually and how they interact. I find myself pretty much never touching the bump stop rate. Even though I conceptually understand what it does. Never seen anyone really explain the use cases of each setting, and the consequences of those settings on track.

the problem with setups for console is that you can't use files, so someone has to go through the process of making screenshot, uploading and providing them or build a file interpreter that reads out the values which is tricky cause each car is different in that regard... just a lot of work for a potentially small customer base unfortunately

@@SimracingPopometer Thanks man! Appreciate your time immensely! I understand the inability to import specific files. However my fingers are crossed that somebody will eventually share setups via vids as they do them. I do notice that there is a fantastic amount of knowledge freely shared from many ACC (pc) racers, and I am studying everything i can find. Who knows maybe I'll be the one to make a set up vid for that freekin pesky 488 evo..... Gratitude sir.

@@everythingNotHere if you grab a setup from our discord or the popometer website with your laptop, you can open the file with a text editor. all things in there are numbers of clicks from the left of the sliders in the game. but it's probably easy to get confused. I'll have a think if we add screenshots to our data packs. this way at least the setup is usable and also you can see the line of the pros even though unable to compare to your own

Thanks for the video. I was searching around your channel for an explanation of bump stops. So do gt3 cars usually hit the bump stops in most corners? Or is the only way to find out is to use motec? I hesitate to adjust bumpstops because idk if the car is hitting them in the first place so I just adjust the springs. Also, I’m wondering why you would adjust bumpstops vs springs. I can only assume you want to adjust bumpstops if you only want to affect compression without rebound of each corner of the car, since a spring would affect both.

Nice Video Nils, I enjoy the content on the Setup explanation compartment. A question tho, is it reliable to use the Aggressive Setup default (Front to Back) weight balance % as a "neutral" feely car? Or can you maybe come up with some "standards" for Front, mid and rear Engine cars?
@SimracingPopometer
@SimracingPopometer 3 жыл бұрын
this is aero, not weight balance - very important difference. there are not standards because each car has that indicator in an entirely different range. you cant compare this value between cars at all and the whole dynamic of the car throughout the lap has more impact on the balance as that one indicator. so no, no general standards but every car has a range where its likely going to be used, which will mostly be around the value that the aggressive setup holds

hey, sorry thats very specific. i dont know all presets of all cars and tracks by heart. often its about getting ground clearance here on bathurst. there are 3 targets: A) take the uphill section (almost entirely) flatout until the dropper. B) make the car stable into the dropper C) remain topspeed

In motec, i see there's some fudge factors in your project file to convert the suspension position to the ride height. 1.8, and 1.9 so on.. if i drive out of the pits, and stop the car on a flat surface, i suppose i should get back the static ride height that i set in the setup screen?

I liked the video but I was curious on why you stiffined the rear bump rate in the video if the bump stop in the rear isn't resting in the fronts....I thought the bumpstop aka helper springs? needed to be pretty close to have an affect? It sounds like even though they're at 50....they still influence the springs?

@@SimracingPopometer maybe I misunderstood bumpstop. I thought if that red line wasn't on the yellow in the settings they effectively were not doing anything specifically in the rear. But I guess that is the range before they compress and influence suspension behavior.

When we choose the softest bumpstop rates, can we say they are (bumpstops) acting like they are not there anymore so car feels more stiffer on that section? I mean imagine, there are no bumpstop so car hits the max travel point at the top easier-quicker and bottoming out the car... I am just so confused only about the bumpstop rates. I wonder if they simulate bs rates like that. What do you think Nils?
@SimracingPopometer
@SimracingPopometer 3 жыл бұрын
even the softest offer resistance and the resistance increases the more they are compressed. So i would say no, we cannot act like they are not there.

So if the bumpstop range is 0, does that mean that the wheel rate doesn’t even matter because there will never be any movement at all? Or is there always some movement?

there's always movement as the bump stop is a flexing piece of rubber, with a stiffness you can alter

Question about ride height: the target is, the low as possible, as high as necessary. But how you chose the minimum ride height? By hearing when the chassis is scratching? By feeling then the car touches the ground? By looking the replay to see if theres contact with the track? What's the easiest way to find out?
@SimracingPopometer
@SimracingPopometer 3 жыл бұрын
as you can see with the whole dynamic of this is that the ride height can be very low even when you have nominally set it higher in the setup - its just about when you want it low and when high

so this video is just to explain the factors and dynamics you can control with settings like spring, bump stop rate and range (not dampers). generally you could say that the wings and ride height defines the base balance and the mentioned parts define how much you want to deviate from this behavior into both directions in different driving situations. priority over wing and ride height is heavily car dependent. on some you get more impact from the wing, some get more impact from ride height, you dont generally favor one over the other. its all testing :) for the actual setup you have to consider how bumpy the track is, if you have to use kerbs or not. its very specific and every answer i write will always have shortcomings. I also don't know the final setup when I start driving on a given track/car combo - one needs to figure out what is required. The settings and the way of thinking in this video can help you get desired behavior without having to touch the ride heights when on some tracks it cannot be done. on some tracks you might want to run higher rake with less a less dynamic car, on some you will want a car with less rake but a more dynamic change of behavior. its also about what you can handle as a more dynamic car usually is more tricky to drive cause the driver controls how much he/she wants of that behavior, e.g. how deep you trail the brakes. say on spa or monza you have long straights where high rake might cost you speed. yet you can still get rake in dynamic situations on these tracks if you allow the car this movement and if you also do your part as a driver to tap into it. probably got carried away and as said this will always be insufficient info
@hatersbby
@hatersbby 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the tips now i will have more insight on making setups. I have a question tho: does the sensitivity on the rear determined by the downforce generated at the diffuser or the wing? so if the wing generates most of the rear downforce making changes on the wing changes the percentage more? because i was testing with the v12 which doesnt have a diffuser and even 30mm ride height change does 0.1% on the balance.

If, if, if there's a calculation of suspension frequency in ACC then I can see how easily you can go out of the knee and also affect motion ratio with this method no matter how you want to compensate using the dampers. On the other hand, if ACC (and AC) coding does not take suspension frequency in consideration this is a powerful loophole.
