She tweaked the script slightly to make it a female version. The part she had tears in (All the flowers you planted in the backyard Mama) was thinking about her mum, who died in a car crash three weeks before. She had a very difficult life with her mum, and wanted to forgive her, but it was too late. All the other lyrics of this song (written by Prince) wasn’t about her life. She chose this song because she loved it herself.

There is an official video on Prince's channel, there is an audio only from The Family LP, and there is also a really soulful, though not great video quality, live out there on YT. Evidently it was I Forgetting Sarah Marshall but I don't remember it. Prince was a true artist and great person. Legendary. That we got him and MJ at the same time was unbelievable.

There's been some great renditions of this song by some fantastic singers but none have come close to how Sinead sang it especially deep emotions she gave to us.

For those familiar with him, Prince's "touch" is heard miles away in this song. In fact, he wrote it and then decided to let her sing it and together they created a piece that has gone down in history. P.S.: the tears are real in the end and Sinead said in an interview that at that moment she was thinking about her mother and the "problematic" relationship with her. She’d recently lost her mother, so when she sings ‘all the flowers that you planted, mama, in the back yard, all died when you went away…’, it was very personal to her, which is why she starts to cry.

The song sung by her is a masterpiece and that tear at the end just put it over the top. If it came out today it would go to #1 easily and also this vid would break the internet.

Oh Sinead. May she rest in peace. This song is so powerful, even more so now, I think. For me, it’s when the single tear rolls down her cheek that I just want to give her a big hug and tell her the pain will get better. I read something that said she was reminded of her mother who’d passed when she was recording the video and that’s where the tear came from. Such a powerful video. Clearly the budget wasn’t huge, but the choice to have the close-up on her beautiful face and those huge expressive eyes was a master stroke.

I was 9 years old when this song was played over and over again on the radio in 1990 / 91. And that was the first time i was in looooove and also the first time i felt lovesick. Today it feels kinda cheese, but it gives me memories of pure and rare emotions.
