Fun fact: The video director said, years later, that he wished he'd made the entire video just of Sinead's face, but they'd already spent time and money filming the outdoor shots, so he thought he should use them. He said if he was doing it again they would have ended up on the cutting room floor! Bonus fun fact: Apparently Sinead's haircut was a result of a record company executive telling her to grow her hair to look more feminine and attractive, so she went home and shaved her head! 😂

Prince wrote this song in 1984. Sinead O’Connor did this cover version in 1990. It went to no.1 in the UK charts and no.1 in 18 other countries. She tweaked the script slightly to make it a female version. The part she had tears in (All the flowers you planted in the backyard Mama) was thinking about her mum, who died in a car crash three weeks before. She had a very difficult life with her mum, and wanted to forgive her, but it was too late. All the other lyrics of this song (written by Prince) wasn’t about her life. She chose this song because she loved it herself.

Yup- another thing for young listeners to understand about the Purple Genius is his writing- amazing and generational. Prince grew up in the 60's and in his speech, the lyric "..all the flowers that you planted *Mama*..." are easily misunderstood as Mother (as opposed to 60's slang, "girlfriend"). Listeners / singers can make a song their own, can and should interpret the words as they choose- but fyi, when Prince wrote it, he was referring to his GF. 🙏🏾

Prince wrote for a side project The Family in 1985. There is an official video on Prince's channel, there is an audio only from The Family LP, and there is also a really soulful, though not great video quality, live out there on YT. Evidently it was I Forgetting Sarah Marshall but I don't remember it. Prince was a true artist and great person. Legendary. That we got him and MJ at the same time was unbelievable.

For those familiar with him, Prince's "touch" is heard miles away in this song. In fact, he wrote it and then decided to let her sing it and together they created a piece that has gone down in history. P.S.: the tears are real in the end and Sinead said in an interview that at that moment she was thinking about her mother and the "problematic" relationship with her. In my opinion, this video is an example of how a singer/performer MUST make a music video, feeling "into" the music and lyrics.

Actually she used it without his permission, it was her manger idea, and Prince did not like it according to sources. He wrote and recorded it in 84 (later it was released by Warner in 2018) and gave it to a group he put together for their 1985 debut album under his label Paisley Park Records called The Family. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/lcCcrbFhrNrUoGw.html Sinead O'Connor tells a story of an angry Prince wanting to beat her up, you can find it on youtube. "The Irish performer told The Times: “Firstly, Prince didn’t like people covering his songs.” O’Connor added: “Secondly, he had all these female protégés and he was annoyed that I wasn’t one of them. Thirdly, my manager Steve Fargnoli had been his manager and they were involved in a legal case. On top of all this he was a woman-beating c**t. I’m certainly not the only woman he laid a hand on”."

@@EnervatedSociety I remember this well. It also led to one of my absolute favorite live music moments. I was in the Globe in Sweden and saw Prince at the time when O'Connor turned it into a hit. Prince clearly needed to show ownership of the song, so he sang it alone playing a large black grand piano.

@@EnervatedSociety All the serious artists (who know what they're doing in a studio) get referred to as "control freaks." Far as drugs are concerned, O'Connor checked herself into *rehab* in 2016 (as most all rock stars over 30 will sooner or later). But, yes, Prince did get stuck on fentanyl in his later years purely due to all those years of truly overperforming on stage. (When I saw SOC in 1990, she had to stop the show after 45 minutes, due to voice breakage...)

@EnervatedSociety
@EnervatedSociety Жыл бұрын
No he didn't. Prince wrote and recorded this song in 1984 but didn't release it. He then gave the song as an album filler to a band he put together under his label. That band was called The Family. You can look them up on youtube. Sinéad's manager, who was in a lawsuit with Prince, suggested she cover it and so they did, without Prince's permission. After it was global hit Prince had to play it off in public but in private he was not happy and said he didn't like her cover. Sinéad also tells a story of the time they first met, after the success of her version, and how they almost got into a fist fight because he wanted to control her. I’m certainly not the only woman he laid a hand on”." So no, no blessing. Till this day his estate is still very sour about the whole ordeal. They blocked Sinead O’Connor's Documentary from using ‘Nothing Compares 2 U’ in it. Prince’s half-sister Sharon Nelson says the reasons for refusal are both personal and financial. O’Connor wrote about Prince, “I never wanted to see that devil again.”

With Sinead's version, the softness of her voice completely conveys the anguish and devastation of lost love. The whispering of lyrics copies the way your voice will halter or "crack" when you say something while holding back the tears. It is that constant "on the verge of breaking down" in her voice that enforces and highlights the impact of the lyrics over all.

Best version ever !! The way she looks, sings, and expresses herself is very powerful !! "Nothing Compares 2 U" is a song written and composed by Prince for his side project, The Family; the song featured on their eponymous 1985 debut album. The song features lyrics exploring feelings of longing from the point of view of an abandoned lover. Several years later, Irish singer Sinéad O'Connor recorded a version of the song for her second studio album, I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got (1990).

So Powerful & Unforgettable 😥 Sinead"s raw outpouring of emotion moves me no matter how many times I've heard this over the years, her tears are real as she was thinking about how much her mother meant who was lost in a car accident. Yes it's written by Prince from the one off family album back in 85 , they did meet up after its worldwide success but really didn't get along due to her outspoken views about religion & that SNL skit tearing up the pope , with prince being a Jehovah witness ,it resulted in a punch up something to do with a pillow & having to flee at 5 in the morning. While making her showtime documentary last year prince's estate denied the rights over the song with there being another version as a duet with Rosie gaines. Sinead's first single ' heroine' was co written along with U2's edge before the release of her first album ' the lion & the cobra' & the breakthrough mandinka , followed by I do not want what I haven't got, other songs to look out for include Troy, this is a rebel song , Molly Malone never get old, I want your hands on me ,fire on Babylon , empire all about leadership, success has made a failure of our home, you made me the thief of your heart ,James brown, kisses like mine, take me to church , song to the siren ,something beautiful & queen of Denmark , there's also been duets with simple minds & Peter Gabriel. Hopefully your do more reactions with her again as well as Prince. Thanks so much 💖 🇨🇮 🖐️

Oh Sinead. May she rest in peace. This song is so powerful, even more so now, I think. For me, it’s when the single tear rolls down her cheek that I just want to give her a big hug and tell her the pain will get better. I read something that said she was reminded of her mother who’d passed when she was recording the video and that’s where the tear came from. Such a powerful video. Clearly the budget wasn’t huge, but the choice to have the close-up on her beautiful face and those huge expressive eyes was a master stroke.

Prince himself has said she made the song hers, and was blown away by her version, cuz he knows music!😆I’ve never actually heard the Price version. The word you are looking for is melancholic. Prince wrote this song but he didnt understood it. His version is bombastic and misses the point. Sinead O'Connor got to the core of the song and interpreted it perfectly. Apparenyly Prince got very angry and he even invited O'Connor to his home so he could beat her up. He was high as a kite during their confrontation and O'Connor described the happening as if it was a Loonie Tunes cartoon chase scene with her running the car while Prince running after her and screaming until he got fed up and went back home. Ptince was a music genious, he was also completly insane.

Just think for a minute... is it a coincidence that this song is perfect for Sinead O'Connor? She was already a worldwide successful artist before this song was released (The Lion & The Cobra). In addition to softness, Sinead has an amazingly powerful voice when she unleashes it -- see her "Fire on Babylon" video for a perfect example. For a more rhythmically mesmerizing song, I'd suggest her studio version of "I Am Stretched on Your Grave" from the album 'I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got'. BTW, that album is nearly perfect and every song on it deserves a listen, if not a reaction.

Hi Bisscute, Sinead did not have a good childhood, hence her covering this original Prince song. I quote her words, 'There was no therapy when I was growing up, so the reason I got into music was therapy. Which is why it was was such a shock for me to become a pop star. It's not what I wanted. I just wanted to scream.' One of five children, Ms O'Connor spoke out about being subjected to physical abuse at the hands of her mother, who died in a car crash in 1985. At the age of 15, she was placed in a Magdalene asylum for shoplifting and truancy. Ms O'Connor said: 'Everybody in music has a story in terms of their upbringing, or where they came from or what they went through. 'You know there is something they need to get off their chest, and perhaps we all need a bit of love and affection that we didn't get anywhere else, but we get by making music.' Asylums and or boarding schools for kids were very unpleasent, cruel to unwanted or orphaned kids back then. She is singing about wanting her Mum, in my own humble opinion.

I didn't really feel anything for this song until I really listened to the lyrics. Now everytime I play this song I get Emotional because of the way she was treated when she was a kid.

Prince wrote this song for The Family, one of his side bands for the original version of this version. It wasn't a big hit for them but Sinead O'Connor cover of the song was a huge hit.

It wasn't a hit for them cause he never released it as a single the album, The Family's version is wayyyy better than Sinead's version imo.

Sinead was one of the bravest people in the industry. She took on the giant that is the Catholic church for the things they were doing and they utterly destroyed her for it. But she never stopped fighting.

You should note this was the first ever, and maybe only since, music video to have the singer just face the camera the whole time and belt out the song..

What a beautiful reaction to this wonderful, emotional, song. Thank you. You asked for recommendations. Here is one from way back in the day that effected me in my teens the same way that Sinead effected you in this song. I hope you consider reacting to it. This song was a monster hit when released, and well you can hear why, and yes besides being a beautiful, emotional song, this song is also timeless.. Prince did a good cover of this song, but Sinead´o´Connor owns it, the original song we heard here, is far the best version..

The thing that made this video (and song) so popular was her physical emoting. She sells the lyrics with her eyes.
