Dr Dan's Voice Essentials

Күн бұрын

If you’re just starting to learn to sing, then this video is for you. Singing exercises are a necessary part of your development, but they don’t need to be complex to get great results. In this video, I’m going to show you three beginner singing exercises that will get you started on your journey of learning to sing.
Don’t let the simplicity of these activities fool you into thinking they’re not important. We can run the risk of thinking that the more advanced singing exercises are better. And while some singing exercises are complex by design, that doesn’t mean that the simpler exercises don’t offer great value to the beginner singer.

I'm surprised no one said this but even if you do everything properly, you will get a sore throat if you're practicing a LOT and often. Especially if you're a beginner and haven't made your body used to it yet. So yes, what the other commentors said is true...but in the beginning you will have a sore throat if you're practicing often. Think of it as a guitarist...a guitarist will develop calluses on their fingers when first learning and their fingers will hurt...but over time, their fingers get tougher. I made sure and asked a vocal coach I know before making this comment. But yes, make sure you're using more diaphragm than throat. :)

I have an older female voice student who chronically holds the back of her tongue high up against the roof of her mouth (most nasal & no tone voice I have ever worked with). Today I'm going to do this simple exercise with her (I use this 5 note scale all the time with my students). When we are done I'm going to have her identify her tongue placement. Hopefully it's NOT high & back. Then we will go to this video where you remind singers about tongue placement. This will help me greatly as that she questions what I'm trying to help her understand. THANK YOU. Sending best wishes for you & your wife !!! :)
@musikrantproductions7281

Hi Dr. Dan. We worked on getting her tongue to lay more flat so that her air space is open & not squeezed off. Honestly though I don't feel like she will be able to re-position because of many decades of producing her tone this way. It's a struggle for me at lesson with this student. There is a fine line between being helpful in a constructive (not hurtful) way or being an enabler. I'm sure you understand this. Love my job though !!! "Rock On" Dr. Dan !!!

Thanks Dr. Dan. I have another female student who places her tongue low & back = KERMIT THE FROG. Your Tongue Tied article addresses this. She is fine when she does exercises in class but falls back into the low position when she sings her songs. SEEMS LIKE NEW SINGERS ARE TRYING TO FIND TONE USING INCORRECT TECHNIQUE. Then it turns into a bad habit. "I love my job". Thanks.

I'm a vocal coach too. I find the exercise easiest is to have her stick her tongue out and do staccato notes on the vowel ah up and down the scale. The tongue will return to inside the mouth but the muscle memory of stretching it will remain and her tongue won't be as high right after. Worked for me

Thanks for your suggestion. The problem started with her speaking voice. Way nasal & placed high. All her tone was placed high in the mask … pinched with stress. She could temporarily access a better tone in lesson with lots of focus on more of an "open throat", however, I finally gave up trying to help. Dropped her as a student. About drove me insane.

Blues N Classic Rock Two things that need practice in the beginning. 1. Hearing when pitch is off and 2. reproducing a pitch we "hear" in our head correctly. Our vocal cords does not often do what we want! 1. Get an western tuned ukulele or any kind of guitar. Ukulele are inexpensive and very useful. Learn to tune by ear. Lots of tuning tutorials on youtube. Must be by ear (except lowest string). When you tune you practice hearing minute differences in pitch between notes. You will start to hear the beat between notes (which are the difference in frequencies) as a slow wobbly hum in your head. You must be able to hear this or you will be unable to correct yourself when you sing. At this point your mind will forever know when stuff is out of tune and kids singing for the most part will start to sound horrible! 2. Here is one way to get better: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qNScgayL06ylcXk.html . Or use the ukulele from 1. or other instrument to strum random notes and sing a relaxed tone to match. Practice to find the hum/beat/resonance. Practice singing of and adjust voice on pitch.

Storytime lol. My voice as a kid was very high and I kept on singing high songs like mariah carey and avril lavigne's heart attack but stopped because I was embarrassed by one of my best friends saying my voice sounds like a girl. I was so conscious about my voice I stopped singing, not until I reached high school and started using falsetto so I can sing quietly and that is when my voice started breaking, butttt I can still sing very high, with the use of falsetto and head voice. I forgot how to use my chest voice, and maybe in the future I'll be good at it again. Lol maybe because when my new friends told me that I should pursue opera, I stopped using chest voice and started focusing reaching high notes and possibly do a whistle. Now I'm here because I wanted to sing rock songs without using falsetto or just sing songs that aren't opera. The end

Question, I just cam across your video's and am interested in practicing some of these singing exercises. So I was wondering with these 3 exercises how often and how long everyday should someone practice these to improve singing ability's. Also could you create a practice video with more practice techniques. Thanks

Elton John learned from Leon Russell before each performance to have a glass with 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar, a tablespoon of honey and hot water mix it up, gargle it and spit it out this he says is the recipe he received from Leon back in 1970 and he's been using it ever since. Just thought I'd share.

Perfect practice makes perfect right? When I sing it sounds off key or out of tune. Do I just do it over and over again and try to mimic what he sounds like on each note in the sequencey and try to learn by ear / trial and error? or should i get a list of these notes / a visual scale and a tuner so I can see if I'm flat / sharp on each? Thanks!

He has a pretty high voice. Unfortunately the scales covered do not fit my vocal range at all. I would recommend to anyone to just pick up a guitar or piano and find a place where you can sing comfortably and just learn to play a scale there

Hello, great channel. Every Vocal Training lessons I've seen so far, have all jumped straight to exercises. None seem to take into consideration truly ABSOLUTE Beginners who have absolutely no Music Theory knowledge. Questions like these arise: How do I know and identify which note is this How do I sing this Note What is the meaning of all these Terms: Perfect 5th, etc. I've been in every hole on the Internet looking for a course with a curriculum for actual Absolute Beginners, haven't found any. I would appreciate any suggestions.
