Singing with nodules doesn't signal the end of your singing career! For some, today’s topic is a scary one. Vocal Fold Nodules are probably the most notorious of vocal pathologies. Equally, they are among the least understood conditions.
As is often the case, poor information can lead to fear, so today I want to dispel the fear that surrounds vocal fold nodules by describing what they are, discussing how they should be treated and finally I’ll offer some helpful tips for those of us that have received a diagnosis of nodules.

I only developed a vocal nodule once around 2013 when I first began learning harsh vocals via damaging pressure from tense arytenoid cartilage vibrations in the falsetto range. My falsetto was nearly gone and I sounded like a carton-a-day smoker for a while, but after barely speaking for a couple of months it's now healed to where I can hit A5 and perform healthy distortion with ease.

Thanks for the hope and motivation. It started when I screamed to loud at a concert. And then having some mental breakdowns where I let out wailing screams out of emotional pain. And it sucks cause I have made a lot of progress on my singing voice. And have been told I have a nice speaking voice I thought maybe I could make a career out of it.

Seriously!! I was just diagnosed with vocal nodule a week ago and I’ve been having meltdowns since. My doctor didn’t say ANYTHING hopeful like that, instead he said “I’m not God”. Wth!! I feel so much better now!

I've been trying to get a proper diagnosis for nearly 6 months and I've FINALLY been referred to an ENT! I found this video really useful and I think I do have this. I've been told I had laryngitis, reflux, postnasal drip, oral thrush...maybe it's all connected? Thanks. Your videos are always really insightful and helpful.

I was diagnosed with vocal nodules back in high school. I am 49 years old now and I am not sure if they are still an issue or likely went away on their own. Back in high school I was singing almost every day. Now, I sing from time to time. Thank you!

Excellent video, and really clear. I woke up after a knee replacement operation to find my voice was wrecked. I didn't have a tube in my throat for the op, just an oxygen mask, and my throat was majorly dehydrated. As a result my upper register (I'm a male tenor) is just gone, and any note above G3 comes out sounding like I'm on helium (I can usually belt a top C on a good day). It's now been 3 months and still no improvement. I've been resting my voice completely, no singing at all, and was starting to get really worried until I saw your video. Thank you so much fo this

I used to be able to sing really pretty but a few years ago I was diagnosed with this and we don’t have enough money for me to get the surgery and I can still sing but it sounds like something is blocking it from it’s full potential and a lot lower

Freddie Mercury did too that is why in most of Queen live show he doesn't go for the high note often but he was still doing it in studio proving that if you take a little bit of time off and take care of your voice it's possible to still sound like you used to

Hello and thanks for this Video. I just have another question about nodules. Is it a longer process for them to build up or is it possible that you overdo on singing just one day (quite heavily) and they appear quite quickly ? Second was the case with me (I was on a concert singing along for over an hour, and singing before the conert and afterwards too) and now I have these symptoms. My voice was fine before the concert. Hi I was wondering because I been having problems with my voice for about 3 weeks but I have been sick with a chest cold for 3 weeks but my voice isn’t a 100% well. Could all the vocal problems I have been having because of the chest cold and should I give it some more time to get over the cold. Right now for money reasons I can not see a doctor at the moment. I have been diagnosed with nodules went to an ENT and been through therapy. I still experience tightness and discomfort while and after singing. any helpful hints? the nodules have improved dramatically in four months but still tightness. ????

Hey Dr Dan, I wonder if you can help me with some much needed advice. Long story short, I started singing about 4 years ago and I developed vocal nodules about 2 years ago due to lack of technique. I will follow treatment and do some vocal therapy but I'm not sure how I should proceed forward. My goal would be to be able to sing both clean and aggressive - but not extremes (neither crystal clear clean nor low growls). What would be the steps I should take and what to focus on in order to protect my voice? I'm only singing as a hobby, so I would avoid a exhaustive approach to singing, that's why I would very much appreciate a roadmap or some indications on what would be useful in my case. Thank you!

I was diagnosed having vocal nodules on both sides :( Also have Laryngopharyngeal reflux. I have to stop singing for months. Hopefully the nodules will go away.

I don’t understand what’s wrong with my voice like I can sing high notes and sing like I normally do but now my vibrato is gone. I tried to use it and it cuts in and out. I can’t sing songs that hold the notes long cause my vibrato just stopped working altogether. My doctor got me an appointment to see a head, ear, neck and throat therapist and they said I didn’t have anything wrong besides I have a bad case of acid reflux so they put me on so called medication because I had acid inside my throat but I’ve been taking it for a few so called months now and my vibrato is not at all coming back and it’s scaring me bad. It happened right after my surgery when they put that tube down my throat but I got dang checked and they said nothing is wrong and the medication that I’m in is not working at all. Like my vibrato use to be so strong it would come out without me pushing it and now it doesn’t want to come out and it cuts in and out and it affects me horribly.

I suspect that have vocal nodes :( but I’m not sure. 1: Decrease in volume and strength in my voice2:Breathiness and it doesn’t sound as crisp as before3: Very noticeable decrease in vocal range3: Having to clear my throat a lot Do you think it could be nodes? If so, would I be able to see them myself or have to ask a doctor? Please help!

The only way to accurately diagnose any voice pathology is to visit an ENT or laryngologist.

go and see an ent. im suffering similar things to you but after having my vocal chords checked they are completely healthy - my point is there are many things which can cause worsening of the voice and most are temporary.

I have all those symptoms but my voice breaks at a certain place or certain notes i.e. middle C# to D#, i can sing in mix above them very well and as it goes up its gets stronger but my condition has been like this for yrs, exact same place voice breaks and weak voice...i thought i had transition issues but nope. Will be visiting an ENT soon :'(

i am panicking. i have callused nodes (diagnosed by proper doctors) I did some speech therapy, it has not helped. its been almost 2 years since they developed. i have a humidifier, vaporizer, and exercises... i still cant sing high notes. is surgery my only hope now?

Is it possible for vocal nodules to only affect falsetto? My chest voice is fine, and after warming up a little, my head voice is as well, but I am simply not able to sing in falsetto. It is not a function problem, as I have been able to fully get rid of tension, however, it is still almost impossible to sing in falsetto.

I have minor vocal scarring on the left vocal chord which causes raspy voice sometimes. is that going to make it impossible for me to sing well and have access to my higher range? my ENT recommended surgery if I want to be a singer, is it possible to be a great singer even with minor vocal chord scarring?

Yes, you can sing with scarring, but the 'quality' of the voice will be affected depending on where the scaring is situated on the vocal folds.

Hello Dr. Dan, I badly need your help. Just this week I diagnosed with Pre-Nodule on my right vocal cords, I undergone laryngeal endoscopy. My passion since elementary is singing until upto this time. I sing weddings, choir church, band vocalist. But my concern Dr. Dan, why is it I can feel something on my left neck inside and it's some kind of itchiness and it will connect in my left ear. Everytime I sing I can really feel something left part of my neck just beside the center, I can feel heaviness, I can really say that my ability in singing was gone, I can't sing normally. 😫😫😫😫

Is it possible to have had vocal nodules your whole life? My voice becomes very breathy in mid range & I get crack or air for any higher notes. I also can't scream or shout without crack or just air coming out. I have nice pitch, tone, & vibrato but my range is terrible because of this issue. Have had this my whole life.

Is a nodule the same as the ENT saying he wants to do a biopsy on a sac that is filling with fluid? In this instance, would I still do voice therapy first or after the surgery?

No. It sounds like the ENT is talking about a cyst. AN d post surgery therapy is advisable.

shameer khan could be that you’re suffering from Acid Reflux or GERD. Pls visit a Gastroenterologist to check that once.

Need some advice plz. 5 months ago I had covid and lost my voice ever since its never been the same. I sound like I'm sick, when I talk loud my voice cuts off, I can't talk for long periods at a time because my voice gets tired.I finally went to see a ENT and they put a camara down my nose/throat. He said I have a growth on my vocal cord. He didn't specify. He said sometimes with respetory infection he sees this.He said I need surgery to remove it. Is that my only option?

I have pre nodules, they haven't formed as of yet, but there is a swollen area and mucus build in a specific vocal cord area. I went on 2 vocal rest...one 2 weeks and just last week 7 days, taking it easy and only have 5 performances now till March. This video was so helpful! Thank you for being SO reassuring! Also what's your opinion on steroid injections to the vocal cords? Its not surgery its literally an in office visit where a microdiret laryngoscopy is performed and a steroid is injected to the vocal cord. Done some research and seems fairly harmless, a small percentage of people have some difficulties but overall seems good. What do you think?

I have a condition called "post-nasal dripage" Or something of the sort. Yet I can't afford health care currently. So for over 25 days I've had TONS of mucous and problems. Is there any remedies that will help stop this? I belt a lot (Correctly of course) and when you start reaching out of your normal chest register it can lack resonance when so much mucous is getting in the way.

I have the same issue. Drink TONS AND TONS of water (like 5 bottles a day.) It lubriactes the burning, dry throat and thins out the mucus. Im a regular singer and water is pretty much the only thing I drink (along with a cup or two of green/white tea at night with honey.)

Gently Fading Into Muse sir, I drink plenty of water throughout the day but my throat always remains congested thereby preventing me from singing. I have Thyroid disorder and acid reflux. How do I keep my throat phlegm free?

I'm a miss* :p but anyways if you drink plenty of water and "hack up" the phlegm and spit it out in the morning and periodically throughout the day and you're still having these extreme issues I would say just go see a doctor and they will advise the best approach. I have to perform several times in the immediate future and I have nodules. No way out of it. I an on mt second week of steroids and it helps while I take them but I have insulin issues and can't keep taking them for the next month. I'm getting frantic. How should I proceed?

@@DrDanRobinson I saw an autolaringologist. He put me on a 5 day course or serious which helped but within a day of the course ending my voice started fading again. I know with caution to prevent further damage, but I sound like I gargled with sand and im struggling with breath control and stamina. How do I actually make my voice functional for these things?

Hi brother,my issue is for about 2-3 months, I am having a pain on the left side of my throat along with mild pain in left jaw,left ear.I also tried to rest my voice for one month.But there is no improvement.After a vocal rest of one month,the pain again came when I sang.I don't know what is the cause.There is no hoarsness or raspy voice symptoms.There is alone on my left side throat.What is your guess?why this may be happening?

Dr dan, last week my vocal range was completely fine but just the other day suddenly my upper range just cut out and now when I try to do high notes it comes out breathy or not at all and they used to be notes I could hit easily without trying! What's happened??!!

Santi Adame I had the same thing a couple of months ago. For me it was from over use. Going from nothing to 3 gigs a week (4 hour solo shows). It took a couple of months to properly come back. I kept doing gigs because I didn’t want to cancel, but started singing songs a little lower, which gave my voice a chance to rest. Was scary, but it really just needed rest, then also doing daily warm ups etc. I did go to an ENT to make sure no serious damage was done.

I developed several nodules as a result of acid reflux disease burning up my vocal chords as a sleep and I literally can never sing again😥 this stupid disease ruined my career in theater, all I know is my voice, I haven't even worked a regular job ever be auze I've been in theater, and then broadway since childhood, now I work at a subway and can't even speak to the customers. The surgery is seen as cosmetic so I will never be approved.

Same here I’ve had one small nodule for about 1 year now .. the nodule does not get worse nor better it’s just there.... super annoying! Some days my voice is clear other days it’s super hoarse. Debating surgery right about now... any recommendations???

Dr Dan I had to have surgery to remove a nodule that was partially blocking my windpipe. It was horrible couldn't get my breath. It's now been a year and my ENT DR says due to scarring voice probably will never be the same. I just wish for a better sound talking voice. Can you recommend anything I can try to improve talking voice?

If I may add some ENTs like to go right to surgery. Surgery is a last resort. And be sure it's correctly diagnosed. Go to an ENT that has singers clients. Get a second opinion. A nodule can be misdiagnosed as a polyp and visa versa.

Thanks for describing so nicely. I have been suffering by this problem for 4 months.i feel discomfort in my voice when sing more songs and I can't sing high scale 😣😣😥.even when i talk much i feel discomfort. I went to dr.but they said nothing serious its happening for my acid reflux diease but i didn't feel before as i have been suffering by reflux diease for 10 years. Please give me a solution to fix my voice as i love to sing. 🙏🙏🙏

Have you been to an ENT? A laryngologist will be able to fully assess the condition of your vocal folds.

Dr Dan, a friend of mine who was once a very succesful singer is battling a condition called Spasmodic Dysphonia. Its been ten years and consulted all ENTs and Laryncologists in our Country, India. His singing is not in his control, voice just cracks. I would like to know your thoughts on this. Thank you
