Singlespeed Tensioner: Noisy Pulley?

The single speed drivetrain has less components and requires little maintenance.
There’s no need to replace cables and make adjustments to the derailleurs.
Clean and lubricate the chainring, sprocket, tensioner and chain once in a while will prevent any excessive wear and keep your drivetrain rolling properly.
The chain tensioner (ZTTO ZLG-01) converts the bike to single speed when your frame has vertical dropouts. But is there any downside with it?
The noise.
No matter how you adjust it and align it, the pulley is making noise when it engages with the chain.
The noise is obvious but it doesn’t affect the riding of the bike, I haven’t dropped my chain for a single time.
Does changing the aluminum pulley to something plastic manage to reduce the noise?
Aluminum vs Plastic
Let’s bring out a derailleur that I don’t need, take that pulley out and replace it with the chain tensioner.
Can you hear the differences? Not much, the improvement is minimal to none.
Therefore, I’ll stick with the aluminum pulley.

Got a tensioner the same type but a little different. Now I know how to adjust and install. Thank you young man for this feeble ole minded man on doing things.

Great video! Amazing idea, I have the same tensioner. The bearings on these are 8mm so you could order an 8mm replacement roller and reuse the end caps on the purple sprocket and send it on!

Thanks for the video, nice to see that a standard derailleur pulley could be used. IMO, looks much nicer with the black pulley

i change my pulley into stock pulley of shimano altus. coz its too noisy, now its okay. just also check the chainline. few changes on chainline will also cause noisiness.

That was a great video. Never thoigh of changing the sprocket. Amd yes, that sound they make is annoying, but I don't notice change in performance

Maybe the small sproket on the tensioner is tought for different chain width, like 8 speed chain vs 12 speed chains are different. Also someone said chains like 8 speed vs 12 speed don't have same geometry or distance at the rollers of the chain link ? This last one seemed a bit odd, but I can't see why that tensioner would make noise if they all fit.

I think this could be associated with the chainline?

Great content. Very helpful and interesting. Just curious, do you experience any chain skipping with this specific tensioner? Bought the same one and have been experiencing skipping when you pedal harder. Was advised to get a different tensioner. Your thoughts?

@tomerg2 2 жыл бұрын
These tensioners work best when they have minimal amount of slack to take out of chain. Try shortening the chain to the shortest possible length. If that doesn't work you can try to play with different gear combos that may suite your bike better. On my bike 30x19 works great, but with 32x19 there's too much slack and the chain easily drops. You can also try using a zip tie to get the tensioner to push the chain up instead of down, the increase chain wrap of the rear cog can also reduce drops.

Thanks, mine is fine and I’ve never had a problem with it. If the the chain is skipping, I would tighten the chain a little more and see if that will solve the problem.

@Co Coy On my end, replaced the tensioner with a tighter one as my previous one, a ZTTO turned out to be a bit loose for the bike hence the tendency for the chain to jump when there's additional effort pedaling or when going uphill. Have not tried replacing the chain but so far the new Cyclingdeal tensioner is holding up pretty well. Also, I ended up transferring the pulley from my ZTTO. I kept the stock plastic pulley as spare. :)

do you think it works with 10 speed chains too? I mean while that kit is designed for single speed chain (*the cog is different from 8/9/10 speed ones), you had no problems at all with it?
@DanyoSports
@DanyoSports 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, that kit works with a 10 speed chain, make sure your crankset is also compatible with 10 speed.

Could you remove enough slack to test it with out the tensioner on the stand? Is that noise 100% guaranteed to be coming from the tensioner?
@DanyoSports
@DanyoSports 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, the noise is coming from the tensioner.

@@DanyoSports I don't know why but I keep thinking about this problem. Lol, so.... Have you tried or gave thought to replacing the bolt used to mount it? A rubber washer might be beneficial but a spring loaded bolt/screw specifically made to dampen sound would be money. I've used them in the past with a damn near 80% dB drop.

Can you run any gear ratio with a chain tensioner? I have 34 teeth on the front and would like to put 16 at the back. I dunno if that would be like a unicorn gear. If it doesn't work can i just put a tensioner on it?
@DanyoSports
@DanyoSports 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, you can run any gear ratio with the chain tensioner, the only thing you need to do is to shorten the chain to the correct length.
@nzo_6543

This gear ratio worked in Seth's single speed mtb, No tensioner needed, I think it depends how long is your chainstay

The sound comes from metal to metal. Someday i will find a fitting plastic insert and hopefully the noise stops.

Why not just use a half link master instead you can remove that chain tensioner, no need for that with a half link
@ssmtb
@ssmtb 2 жыл бұрын
Good Q- half links don't work with narrow wide chain rings (and it's very hard to find non narrow wide chain rings these day). Also with magic gear the chain loses tension as the chain wears. This may be OK/Not OK depending on your riding style, and how much strain you inflict on the chain (Eg. due to hilly terrain/rider weight/poor maintenance)

The point of having ss is to remove heavy derailleur, cassete, and shifters. Then here you are saying use the old derailleur, theres many light tensioner in the market today.
