It is astonishing that Geoff Hurst is the only man alive from the 1966 England World Cup winning team. He's clearly an intelligent and articulate man.

My hero since 1966 when I watched the game live at age 10. Such a smart and true gentleman. Great that he also mentions in passing that the linesman wasn't Russian. As usually nearly everybody believes.

England is the land of music and great supergroups. But they don't get very far in football. They always forget to take their goalkeeper with them to tournaments. They can still be so happy that Germany is eliminated in the group phase. They will never be able to match the multitude of successes in Brazil, Germany and Italy. PS The success of 1966 will remain a curse. The third goal wasn't a goal.
@luperamos7307
@luperamos7307 Жыл бұрын
Only the English can honestly talk of a hat trick. The phantom goal never went in and his third goal should never have happened or stood. As the German keeper said, Hurst scored one goal that day, not three.

I am not an English (I am an Armenian born in Iran), but a fan of England 1960s through mid 70s and I believe one could argue it was a hat trick. Funny how when there was no goal line technology to end this controversy once and for all one way or the other, those who try to undermine the validity of Hurst's 2- nd goal, never mention the injustice done to England in 2010 to Lampard's goal that thanks to goal line technology clearly shows it was a goal. So if you want to gain credibility, you have to be fair on both those goals. As for the 3-rd goal, yes there might have been some people on the pitch, but either the ref didn't notice which doesn't make Hurst's 3-rd goal invalid, or he did but thought it was not interfering with the game as it was happening the other side of the field. Mind you, only the ref can answer that question, not me, you or anybody Else. Same thing with Maradona's infamous goal against England in 1986; those who cry about Hurst's 2-nd goal, ironically are silent about the invalidity of that goal, but I guess it could be justified by pointing to the injustice done by the British empire in her colonial era!!!! But I don't see anybody knocking German national team for horrors done by Nazi regime in WWII!!! But that shouldn't count; right?!!!!

@@13muller9 That 3rd goal won England the World Cup bc it happened in extra time in the final. 2010 doesn't compare bc neither team would have won the World Cup. The 4th goal in that final was a direct consequence of the third bc it happened in the 120th minute and Germany had to pull their players forward. The point is that the English always talk about fair play, yet they cheat. They swarmed the ref to get that goal. When he didn't make that call they swarmed the linesman to give them a goal they knew wasn't in. In fact, the English even benefitted from VAR at the 2021 Euro. It was a clear dive, but VAR said it was a penalty. So much for stopping the game nowadays for many minutes and completely destroying the flow.

@@luperamos7307 You just don't like the English by the sounds of it. That goal in 2010 was in Injustice because it would have dragged England up to to 2-2 at half time which would have been a very different story in that game. If it was 2-2 at half time. I believe that it would have gone to extra time and possibly a penalty shootout. But that does not matter. Another thing you say the English are not about fairness and sportsmanship. Well to dispute your point watch maradona's interview with Gary Lineker where he talks about the hand of God. He stated to Gary Lineker that he used his hand. Then he laughs about it. Jeff Hurst does not laugh about a referees questionable decision he is dignified in his response. Plus you are staying that the English players ran over to the referee to argue their case and that is somehow crime. For as long as football has been a sport players have been arguing with the referee. In any sport players have argued with referees. So please look up on your history when you say arguing with a referee he is somehow a crime. Also about the penalty in the euros yes it was a soft penalty but there was contact. But do not say that it is only the English who dive I have seen the Portuguese do it the Germans do it Neymar does it a lot. In any case you should be blaming the referee not Raheem Sterling the referee gave the penalty what are England supposed to do not score a goal.

@@callumhughes6448 You keep on bringing up 2010. Yes, England scored valid goal. But even if England had won that game, England would never have won the WC. You are talking about a round of 16 game here! It doesn't remotely compare bc neither team would have won the WC. The main thing in 1966 is that the English swarmed the ref. When he didn't award the goal they swarmed the linesman to award them a goal. Hurst stated many times before that "the ball was well behind the line". Only to state right after that he did not see it. Alan Ball saw if the ball went in, but the rest of the team did not. Does it seem fair to you that they pressured the ref to award them a decisive goal in extra time? I always remembered English commentators complaining if teams like Argentina swarmed the ref.
@callumhughes6448
@callumhughes6448 Жыл бұрын
@@luperamos7307 Yes it is fair when another team swarmz the referee because other teams do the exact same thing. I remember a 98 David Beckham getting sent off. The argentines swarm the swarmed the referee. Also i remember in 2006 when Rooney got a red card and Cristiano Ronaldo winked at the camera there was no outcry then. But the rest of the world as it seem to me, to moan about this kind of thing only when England benefit from it. There is no one saying that the Italians were saw losses in 2002 when they complained that the referee was match fixing in there round of the 16 match with South Korea. Which they went on to lose. Plus you say the referee got pressured into giving the goal a good referee would never get pressured into giving anything. So that on the referee. Lets not kid ourselves teams are there to win by any means necessary. To engrave their name into history. So cheating is always inevitable it's down to the referees to stop that cheating. But sometimes as history has shown us referees make really bad decisions. I do not blame the players for taking advantage of those decisions the same thing for the 1966 World Cup final did the ball cross the line or did it not. It does not matter history says it did so it did.To answer your question about the commentators of course they've got a vested interest there English so of course they want to see England win. The same as any other commentator of another nationality.
