Sackett’s Land and To The Far Blue Mountains. Both are by Louis L’Amour. They follow a Fennman from Cambridgeshire through adventures keeping him one step ahead of the Queen’s men and other more personal nemeses until finally getting to the land of his dreams in the Blue Ridge Mountains. The first five in the series are excellent. After Ride The River the excitement wanes as they turn into regular horse poo and gunpowder westerns.

His house, Buckland Abbey, on the Plymouth edge of Dartmoor is beautiful. It’s a fascinating place to visit.
