This is some unedited black and white footage of the 1977 International F3B contest held in Oxford in 1977.
It was shot on 1/2" reel to reel video tape.
At the beginning is Sean Bannister from the UK flying, and I still remember he did a 14.6 secs for a 2 lap speed task. Next is some footage of one of the Sitar brothers from Austria flying. They used to hand tow from a 150m towline.
The amazing thing then, was they just did 10.5 to 10.6 secs every time and convincingly obliterated the opposition.

Always loved the lines of the Sitar Special...

I did have a lot more footage but I cannot find the rest. I guess it is lost forever.

Frustrating as heck to see that this is the only video on KZfaq with a Sitar Special. In my teen years, back in the 80's, I had acquired a Sitar Special from a local shop in Chico, CA; a pre-made sailplane in fantastic shape. At the time, it was set up to be a 4-channel glider, which I set up with my Futaba FP-T4NL (pre-Conquest). Regrettably, I was never able to find a place to fly it. Later, I lost that plane in a storage accident. But later acquired two more NIB Sitar Specials; an 84" & a 100", both I plan to build in the near future. Anyway, as for videos; as popular as this sailplane was back in the late 70's up to the mid-80's, I never got to see one fly. And since KZfaq came about, I have yet to see a video of one flying. Regrettably, this video is of such poor quality (no disrespect intended), that it just makes it all the more frustrating... that it is the only video with this plane in it. But at least it is something.

This is a video of the original design built and flown by the Austrians. The Sitar Special was a poor mans copy with foam wings. The original model was fully molded and very light.
