Nate's Death is probably the saddest, most emotional moment for SFU fans. The dream(or hallucination?) in particular is an original,haunting, amazing work of art that I have never been able to forget. "We are so fucking LOST!" still gives me chills. David is unrecognizable and has to be seen to be believed. So enjoy a favorite scene of mine from SFU-one of greatest if not most original shows in TV history. I miss Nate & SFU!

I like this but the dream can’t start with just Nate. David appears as a completely different person and Nate would never imagine him this way, he loves him the way he is it’s David that often wishes he was different

Nate's death in SFU and the subsequent remaining episodes dealing with its aftermath and effect on his family are with out a doubt the most finely written, crafted and executed scenes in that were ever seen on TV.

The creator really conveyed the idea that ignorance is bliss in death. We see Nate seeing David as Nate's 'care free' self (the part of him that was repressed due to societal and social pressures e.g. running the funeral business, relationships with Brenda etc.) and so he feels liberated. When they arrive at the beach Nate Sr. says "we're so fucking lost"; this shows how lost Nate was in life. It isn't until Nate reaches the 'ecotone' (beach) where he is in the mix of land (life) and water (death) that we can see how happy and oblivious he is to the fact that he's actually dying. This is the part of the scene that really got to me - the fact that he's so ignorant, yet blissful during his dying seconds, shouting out in much excitement because he finally gets to live (well, die from a reality standpoint) free. The part where Nate shouts "David, you have to try this, it's so fucking warm" in his excited tone of voice hit me because you never hear him that excited in the entire series and so we know that he dies happy and all of his burdens in life are ceased. When the dream switches abruptly to a dark morbid view of the situation with Nate's flat line in the background (David's dream) we, the audience, knows it's over; this really conveys the idea that ignorance is bliss in death well, because we can see both perspectives: Nate - the ignorant, blissful view of death on a sunny day; and David - the morbid, reality view of death on a cloudy day, and these two abstract views of death really resonates with each character. Such a beautiful scene and IMO the saddest part of any TV series I've ever watched. This scene captivated my emotions in many ways and many tears were shed. I feel like I've lost someone close to me; that's how well the creator captured sadness and loss. RIP Nate.

Question one: the fact that David represents his non-repressed side doesn't have any significance except for the fact that he represents the part of him that wanted to be free from societal pressures. Dream characters themselves don't really have much significance except for the meaning they are meant to convey. Question two: throughout the episode the 'ecotone' theme is portrayed throughout and it's shown in the dream where land meets water (sand) i.e. life meets death where Nate is given a choice - Nate Sr - "It's up to you" and Nate obviously embraces it with oblivious excitement. Water would also represent death given the fact that as he falls asleep, the birds on the TV ,which is portrayed throughout previous episodes and represent an omen of death, fly into the water as if showing the way Nate is going to end. Also, Lisa died in the ocean and when Nate was looking for her on the beach he was in a transient state of grief as he felt he was neither living or dead (the ecotone); but embraces death willingly in his dream. I figured land represents life because them travelling in the van represents how lost Nate was in life as quoted by Nate Sr. Question three: That's where the dream switches and becomes David's where the interpretation changes to more of a 'face your fears' kind of thing. Nate embraces his fears; yet David is reluctant and then Nate Sr says "Want to smoke some crack" and David gasps which represents his fear of the crack dealer who took him captive. (David's fears) Question four: Again, the dream changes to his and so does the interpretation and so David isn't Nate's unrepressed self here, shown by the funeral attire. I think he did have the same dream which again, covers the 'ecotone' theme where David and Nate's dreams meet. Sorry, David has a fearsome view of death because he's afraid; hence, the shadow toned sky, as opposed to Nate embracing death. (sun)

My heart dropped when I heard the flatline as he disappeared in the ocean and automatically thought of Lisa's body lost at sea. To those unsure of the dream, imo the title explains it all. Remember Nate said that ecotone is when two ecosystems overlap. Ecotone metaphorically explains the dream perfectly, Nate's dream overlapped with David's; they both dreamed Nate's last moments together.

He is a GREAT actor if you knew what one looked like. And as far as the best actor ever,you are right, that is one's opinion but for most people who have intelligent knowledge to share would agree it's safe to say he belongs right up there with the best. I started watching this show after finishing Dexter because of the incredible Michael C Hall. But i seem to like Peter Krause more! He's my favourite in this show.

Yes, Peter Krause's character was pretty much the central character of the show. It's no coincidence that the show ended only a few episodes after his death.

I had the unfortunate spoiler about Nate's death a little while before I watched it, but I imagined it would be a lot more extreme... I pictured it as a car-crash, or murder by Billy, or suicide... And I was sure it would be the very last scene of the very last episode. Instead I found myself some comfort, in that he didn't die horribly or in pain. And it really touched me that the one by his side was David... Goes to show their connection and brotherhood that developed so much in the show. R.I.P. Nate

i didn't notice til just now but when David says "you look tired" Nate takes a second and responds in a very sad/serious tone saying "I am". I really think the writers meant for that to be Nate realizing he's tired of the life he's living and that he kinda finally let go knowing he was about to die, even though many times in the show he's expressed how afraid of dying he was. ...but just a theory!

I loved SFU and this scene absolutely tore me to bits. "We are so fucking lost" really got to me. The scene is filled to the brim with metaphors and the statement on death, though a little creepy, is actually a peaceful one. Nate is very happy and care-free in the water. He shouts about its warmth as he dives deeper. His brother is left on land filled with the concerns of life. I assume this either means that death simply takes away the pain of life or that Nate is going to a better place. The either/or would be a question of what you believe or don't believe about a God. Michael C. Hall, as a stoner, did make me laugh! "Where's your suit?" "I'm wearin' it, dude." You stoked?" Too good!

I agree Nate wasn't perfect. But one thing you have to love him for is the real human element he brought to the show. While Brenda talked about there being nothing after death, Claire was having a teen crisis, and David was being too uptight to connect to his clients, Nathan would come in and offer genuine sympathy and a shoulder to cry on. that's why i love Nathan

Parker Dolan Yes, I stand by that opinion. Too much filthy language for me, along with several highly unpleasant characters (David is one of the few that I _almost_ liked, due to being an LGBT Christian myself).... This is by far the worst show that I've ever seen. Feel free to disagree, but I reserve the right to have such an opinion.

this scene has stayed with me for such a long time, I would actually lose a lot of sleep just laying here thinking about it. The fact that Nate dies in the middle all of this stuff and his last actions were rather unpleasant and never had a chance to be resolved. It crushed me, but this is all due to the performance and writing creating such a great character that I felt like I truly knew. I loved this show, it's a show that I will revisit later on in life once I'm older and my viewpoint change, just to see what changes for with this show for me

I find it interesting in Season 2 finale, when David is filling out Nate's pre-need, Nate tells David he's scared and says, "I wish you could come with me." I wonder if they kept that in mind when they had this co-dream.

Remember watching this on its first airing and we were so shocked. This was when major characters weren't being killed off right and left, as they are today in, for example, TWD and GOT. This remains one of my top two shows ever ever ever (it's a toss up between this and Breaking Bad, but that one I discovered late. I watched SFU from the beginning.).

I loved this show, but can’t watch it again. It just wretched the gut and jerks the emotions around with such stunning ease. One of the greatest TV shows ever. It hurt so good.

Lived a few rooms down from Peter Krause in college (small, liberal arts college in MN - Gustavus Adolphus College). Used to make fun of him because he was into acting and the "arts" but was a jock on the football team as well. He did well.

He didn't choose to die...The scene's meaning :(of course this is how I think it is) David(probably represents the younger parts of the life) and Nate goes on a trip(life), and finally they come to the end which they were waiting their whole lives. Nate jumps to the ocean(represents death) and David watches(meaning you can't stop death, either join it or watch it happen.).

I've always seen the dream as a sort of way of Nate blaming his father and David for roping him into the funeral business and making him face death for the rest of his life. Nathaniel acts as a moderator (Death, the great divider) and threatens to "separate" them. He even lets Nate choose whether or not to go into the ocean or not, while David, who was always miserable about death anyway, warns him to stay away. Nate, though, is no longer afraid of death, contrary to how he was in the beginning of the series, and embraces it finally. The part that just always really gets to me is when David wakes up from his TV trance and realizes Nate's gone. He doesn't know how long he's been flatlining, and I always assumed he felt guilty for not realizing his older brother was going. Typing this makes me realize another interpretation (there's so many!) where it's David's dream, not Nate's, although the show might make you think that. That's one perspective I think would be interesting to explore...

During the few years this series was originally on the air, my life at the time permitted me extremely limited opportunities to watch much TV - let alone manage to keep up with an ongoing series. Consequently, I missed it entirely, and was finally able to binge on all of the episodes only a couple of years ago. I'm currently working through re-watching - and re-validating my original opinion, which was/is that this is one of the very highest quality shows to have ever hit the airways during the entire history of television. And I believe my opinion to be valuable with respect to the fact that I'm quite elderly and have had vast experience with television dating back to the first time I ever saw a TV set back in 1950 (!)..... so I have plenty of "classic" TV with which to compare it. It simply doesn't get any better than Six Feet Under, does it?

That scene was chilling. That Dialogue is incredibly well written. "We've been waiting for this our whole fucking lives" " this is what we came here to do". Something tells me they weren't talking about a swim in the beach....Pun after Pun.

Even 3 years after finishing this show and watching this scene I still get worked up over the meaning. Its as if I totally get it and then looking back everything about it seems so clear and then suddenly I watch it again and its meaning is beyond my trail of thought. Simply breathtaking.

Love this show so much. I can identify with Claire so much. My family are weird and we always felt stranger than your average family, I have a sister who is 13 years my senior and was supposed to have another sister who is 11 years my senior but sadly she passed away at age 3 from cancer. Sometimes I wonder what our family would've been like if it was the 3 of us together. I was the artsy whimsical kid growing up, a lot like Claire, and my older sister was a lot like Dave, with an inner self that is a lot like Nate. When I saw this scene I broke down and cried so hard not just because I imagined how hard it would be for me to lose my eldest sister, but also imagining how hard it was for my parents and my older sister to lose my other sister so many years ago. This show is so great because it's so much about family and how important it is, and how death is so severely overlooked in our society when it should be treated with a lot more attention and honor.

01:19 If you notice, Nate sees the light and dies at this second. The dream sequence is David dreaming and Nate is already gone. Reference Nate's eyes at 04:41, they are the same as in 01:19 when he dies. Amazing production on this show, even 20 years later I am finding things I missed like this while watching it even after many times.

No that makes 0 sense. He dies as he enters the water, which is why the colour changes and it gets darker. Nate is now dead and it’s now David’s dream. The dreams are like an Ecotone. The dream transitions from Nate’s to David’s.

I watched SFU years ago, but after watching this and the "BEST FINALE EVER- ANY TV SHOW" the tears are coming like I just watched it all yesterday. I remember feeling so cocky and confident that because he was a main character and so important that he'd have his little surgery and all would go back to normal. Thats what they do on TV right!? I still tear up when Nate dies... I hated so much that the series ended. I still cry watching the series finale, which was one of, if not the best finales in all of TV!

the crazy part about this scene is, even if i didnt know the song in the background this wouldve been my favorite TV scene of all time. But strawberry latter 23, this particular version, happens to be one of my favorite songs that i just discovered a few months before finishing SFU. classic shit right here
