Check out this quick and easy workflow to draw a chess pawn in SketchUp Free! Follow along as Aaron shows you some of the basics of using SketchUp Free to model a 3d printable chess piece.
But what good is a single chess piece? Not much... Fortunately, this is the first video of a series! Follow along and model a full chess set!

I never noticed that it displayed if it was a solid group or not in the entity info... I feel like I always learn something new from these skill builders. Thanks!

Thanks for doing what you do. So many Sixth graders all day long learn so many new skills from SketchUp thanks to your video. 7 periods all day get to do this; all full of kids. So again, thank you for doing what you do.

Thanks for all the great videos. Watch for low frequency artifacts in the audio recordings. I've heard 60 cycle hum and a weird rumbling noise. Might consider a high pass filter @ about 80hz. Not a big deal, just trying to help you as you have helped me! Aloha!

Hi, does anyone have any suggestions to help me-when I draw the circle, it will not snap to the blue axis! It just keeps drawing a circle on a slight angle, which then throws everything out of line which means that the follow me tool will not work to create a solid object for the full shape of the pawn.

Perhaps draw a vertical line on the base circle, then draw a line on green/red axis from previous vertical line point. Use rectangle tool to make the corners and, now, using the green/blue axis face, you can use circle tool. Sorry if it is difficult to understand. Some parts are also ambiguous here, but I'm afraid if I add more, you will be confused. I will explain more of you don't understand

I am very new into SkechUp so forgive me the stupid question. My tool manu on the left is much biger and more detailed and I don't have menu on the right at all. How to make it visible?

Are you in SketchUp Free (the web based software running in your web browser)? It sounds like you may be running our desktop software. In that case, the process is the same, but the user interface is quite different.

I have SketchUp free Downloaded yesterday, 28/01/202 and the start page does not look like the video. I can not access the measurements to put in the exact measurements I want? do you have anything updated to the latest version so I can see if I want to purchase it? Right now it doesn't;t work. to do a simple project of making a pallet.
@SketchUp
@SketchUp Жыл бұрын
You shouldn't have to download the Free version of SketchUp as it's web-based. The interface has evolved since this video came out 4 years ago but the functionality should be the same. Also, no need to click into the measurements box...just type in the value as whichever tool you're using is active.

Maybe the strategy is to move more users over to the pro version by making the free version less and less functional. That is why I'm sticking to the 2017 downloaded version, because the 2018 free version is a downgrade on the previous free version.

4:10 Okay, I hate to be "this guy" but I feel like we're either missing a step or calling a tool by the wrong name. I'm literally following this to the letter in another tab right now and my arc tool isn't working like this... at all. I didn't even see you click on the arc tool, it was just selected after you made the line. I make the vertical line, put the circle on top, draw another line from the center of the base to the edge... and then the arc tool acts nothing like what I'm seeing on screen. I click on the arc tool and I get a compass overlay that keeps trying to draw an arc that's convex to the vertical line. After some fiddling to try and at least get the arc to be concave, it doesn't go from the edge of the base to the circle up top. It's only as tall as it is wide and trying to tweak it gets me an error message about too many segments. I have no clue what I'm doing wrong and I feel like this happens every time I try to do anything in Sketchup. Okay, I worked out a little later it's the 2-point arc you're referring to, one of the FOUR arc tools available. I still don't see how you could have selected it, apart from a keyboard shortcut, which was also not specified. By the way, my pawn has a hole in the top of it. Again, following exactly what you're doing. I seriously doubt my experience is unique.

Het Matt! InSketchUp Free, the nested tools show the last tool you clicked on. In this video, Aaron is showing the default tools (the ones that are available by default when you first start Sketchup Free). In the case of the Arc tool, 3 point Arc is the default, but if you clicked on 2-point Arc previously, that will be the tool that activates when you click on the Arc icon. Your best bet is to start a totally new session of Sketchup Free and try again.

Except he didn't click on the arc icon. It was just selected. He seems to have used the keyboard shortcut A but made no mention of it. Admittedly, that's on me, but just how "part 1" is this tutorial? I'd also like to know how using the "follow me" tool on a sphere puts a hole in the top. I've restarted my session at least twice and get the same result every time. I'm even trying again right now and there's still a hole in the top sphere. Then there's the problem with adding line segments to a circle. Every time I use Ctrl+ all it does is increase the size of the toolbars. Using Ctrl- works just fine to reduce the number of segments, but Ctrl+ isn't working, and I've used two different browsers on two different computers running different operating systems. I have to use, say, "36s" or however many segments I need after I make the circle in the same box as the radius. Why can't Ctrl+ do what it's supposed to?
@SketchUp
@SketchUp 6 жыл бұрын
I am guessing that Ctrl+ is captured by your browser and it is zooming in the UI, rather than passing the command to SketchUp. As for the circle at the top not showing up, I would recommend hopping over to the forum (forums.sketchup.com) and posting there. That way we can look at images and get deeper into your model to see what exactly this issue might be.

Nice narrator, but I agree with Matt... I wasted 20 minutes until I figured it out also... should not have had to.

I had the same problem you had with the hole, although mine just didn't match perfectly up on both sides. And, as I suspected it's offset's fault. Usually it works just fine, but sometimes it's not precise enough and makes lovely mistakes like that. So, I ended up basically doing the whole thing on a flat rectangle, adding the bottom circle and following that and... it worked!
