Learned several great ways to speedup my Sketchup workflow: tags, pushpull inferencing to another line, pushpull walls sideways from a vertical rectangle not just up from the floor..etc. So nice when a master is helping us understand the reasons behind various techniques: teaching us to fish, not just feeding us a lesson from a linked set of tasks by rote. Watching Skill Builder videos I actually feel I am learning how to make more efficient decisions in Sketchup generally, which can be applied to many tasks, instead of memorizing a playbook limited to just a few functions. Once again, thank you Aaron.

I enjoy Aaron's method of teaching. I find him easy to understand and he explains things down to the level I need so I'm not guessing about the details or the why a tool behaves in a particular way.

Can you show how you got the base model in image number two? As a beginner I'm wondering how you merged those shapes together to create that outline/framework. Hope that makes sense. Thank you so much!

Lots of good basic SketchUp pointers here even for those who use extensions to model their walls. I wish more of the new SketchUp users trying to use my own extensions would first watch some of these Skill Builder tutorials and elevate their SketchUp game before diving into a complex residential model. Even with extensions one needs to fully understand the capabilities of SketchUp, especially groups/components and tags (layers).

Nice. I always use the inference way for walls, unless something I design is a bit to "wacky" then its rectangular tool all the way.

I generally import the reference file explode it first, repair edges, make face, use a112 plug in to make each wall a separate group then extrude it with joint push pull.. Its the easiest way i find to make walls

I don’t see a video for this, but my scale command isn’t allow me to scale from the centre when pressing the CRTL. I used to do this before but it’s not responding. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. 🙏🏻

This was a great one, I don’t do a lot of walls, but this video brought together a bunch of great tools, inferencing, push/pull, tags, great overall video. You should expand on this one and do a larger series adding doors and windows. Thank you!

Using component is useful because the calculating of cost of each wall. And, in decorating of the interior walls it also easy when using different colors. Also, it's easy for exterior wall if we use ''folow me'' tool. Thank you.

Very useful, thanks. Just one question. My models are getting very large and I’m having to start trying to keep things as simple and computer light as possible, so if I’m making each interior wall a separate group how will this impact the file size ?
@henryrothschild7044
@henryrothschild7044 Жыл бұрын
Simple... make a new drawing and give it a name such as WALL TEST. As you add walls save the drawing about 25% into the drawing, but do a Save As and add a letter A at the end of the first drawing, the near the 50% mark, Save As with the letter B , and so on. When done look at the file names and check the file size of the 4 files you created. This will give you a good idea of file size VS stuff in it. NOTE anything round or curved will require more memory...

Less typing is: pull for example one side of a rectangle to the right size and type a comma and the second size and hit enter.

I'm a new user and find these video's a great resource. On several of the ones I have viewed It looks like you navigate and move the model whilst the drawing tool is still active or just the pointer as in this one.(ie the orbit icon or hand icon is not visible as the model moves) How do you do this?
@SketchUp
@SketchUp Жыл бұрын
Hi and welcome! Aaron usually uses a 3D mouse to navigate in SketchUp, and he made a video on it here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ppipqcuKmLC5fKs.html Best of luck in your 3D journey!

Is it possible to switch wall methods after something is drawn one way? Meaning, I drew a monolithic model (your left example) but down the line I realize that I need specific information on a wall and it would be better to have it drawn like the right version. Wouldyou ungroup then regroup accordingly? Is that possible?
@SketchUp
@SketchUp Жыл бұрын
Possible? Yes! Is it easy or enjoyable? Maybe not so much... Isolating geometry and plaacing it into agroup after the fact can be done, but it will mean editing the geometry in the groups and in the initial model to fill holes and heal surfaces. Depending on the model, drawing again might be the quicker solution!

I just create a generic rectangle, make it a group, use scale tool to adjust it to the dimensions (by specifying actual dimension) I want,, put it in the relevant tag... then copy , paste, move, rotate and scale as needed to populate the entire plan... then pull them all up to the required height... if you want them kept as groups .. or explode, then regroup and trim them all , erase the joint lines and pull up to the required height.. PS use the same method to create urban road networks in town planning... you can overlap the 2d rectangles to ensure a wall intersection and just erase / trim the excess as necessary before pulling it in a 3d group. Using rectangles ensure all your junctions are 90 degrees ( warning SU can still sometimes distort the rectangle , so check )

Simple "dumb" question. Okay...so I have "push-pulled" my wall to be 9'-0". Now I need to "edit" the wall to be 10'-8" high. Is there a simple way to select the wall edit its height? Am I watching the wrong video for that?

Why wouldn't you use ctrl +push pull to make a new face for L/R turn of interior walls.. So that can get all interior walls in one go.
