I cite my sources and they may differ than other people's accounts, so I don't guarantee the actual accuracy of my videos.
The group Slaughter was one of the last hair metal bands to have success just before the whole scene imploded in the early 90’s thanks to the rise of alternative music. Their success was almost unheard of because of the unusual path they took. Today, let’s explore the history of Slaughter.
Slaughter’s beginnings started with vocalist Mark Slaughter and bassist Dana Strum. Mark Slaughter would hail from Vegas and was even a one time guitar teacher, and fronted a band called Xcursion but the city, wasn’t a hotbed of rock talent back in the 80’s. He would tell the Las Vegas sun
"I'm very proud to be from Las Vegas. This is a great city."
"In those days, you high-tailed it out of Vegas as fast as you could to go be a rock star in L.A., New York or whatever,""Coming from Vegas was almost comedy."
Slaughter and Strum would meet for the first time when Slaughter was recording backing vocals for a band called Sin, who was hoping to land a fanbase in Japan.
Strum, at the time was a studio engineer who had already worked with ex-kiss guitarist Vinnie Vincent and who famously told randy rhoads to audition for Ozzy.
Strum would recall to the las vegas sun. Side note guys i’ve done a whole video on the life and death of randy rhoads. The link is down below. Strum would recall meeting slaughter saying
"All of a sudden I hear this kid in the background sessions, singing, 'YAAAAAH' in that (upper) register," "And I said, 'Hang on, do you always sing like that?' And he's like, 'Do you want me to drop down?' And I'm like, 'No, no, no. Is that an act or do you always sing like that?' And he says, 'Well, I'm kind of like a soprano in the choir.' " Soon enough Strum got slaughter a gig fronting Vinnie Vincent Invasion through the mid to late 80’s. The band would would eventually lose their deal with Chrysalis records after which the band called it a day. Apparently the label was not happy with Vincent with Slaughter telling Classic Rock Revisited ou know, Vinnie was difficult, and the record company was not happy with some of his business dealings.” Lucky for Strum and Slaughter Chrysalis wanted to do business with the pair with Slaughter telling the LA Times
"Another guy got the job and made the first album but then he left. I did the first tour and the next album. Vinnie didn't like my singing but the record company did," "That's why they signed me after Vinnie's band folded." "God, how I hated dyeing my hair blonde and being all made up and singing that music,". "One of the happiest days of my life was Aug. 28, 1988. That's when I was through with that band. There was only one good thing about it - it was my stepping stone to building Slaughter."
The pair would relocate to Las Vegas to write and record Slaughter’s first album and recruit guitarist Tim Kelley and drummer Blas Elias (Blas Uh-lie-issss).. The album would be self-produced and the original plan was for Strum to help record the album and then leave, but he ended up staying.

Don't care what anybody says, I love Slaughter to this day. Fun music & the nicest rock stars I ever met. They would sign autographs for hours & take pictures with their fans after their shows. Slaughter is one of those Rock bands that doesn’t get nearly enough respect they managed to succeed while the genre they were associated with was being blackballed as a band they have a very late 80’a sound it’s crisp and clean somewhat Stadium rock! there back catalog of songs is actually really impressive overall “Real Love” as a single is close to flawless “Streets of Broken Hearts” & “You are the One” are both HQ power ballads with major production values within the songs! Days Gone By such a outstanding great song it’s one of those songs you can’t appreciate until you’ve lived to 30+ to understand…. Slaughter from the Beginning is one of the best promotional videos of the 1990’s it’s really interesting as a behind the scenes/Documentary on the band (it’s uploaded on KZfaq almost uncut a music video was edited out not sure why) But, it’s worth watching imo

@Nom de Plume debatable. Although their first album was released in '90, their style harked back to the hairband metal of the mid/late 80s.
@dreamstorm3297
@dreamstorm3297 2 жыл бұрын
@Nom de Plume 80's AOR, hard rock, and glam/hair metal still have strong ties with metal and are linked together family-wise; the overlap of nuances in lead guitar, vocals, and composition aesthetic are all there. It's a lighter subgenre of metal that gets blacksheep'd by enthusiasts of the heavier subgenres due to its past commercial success and girls-&-party image.

@Nom de Plume I thought that writing "If you like Bill and Ted rock" or "If you like Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead rock" would be a little too confusing. But I already knew, internet people and music people combine to create a Frankenstein's monster of pedantry, I took that risk anyway. Maybe I'd even call it "Wayne's World" rock. Trixter, Ugly Kid Joe, Skid Row, Extreme, Slaughter, even Dangerous Toys.

Rite-on Andie! I wasn’t sure how I would say that. The BEST YEARS for myself. Fortunately I have seen VV Invasion w/Mark and the premier line up twice. Also Slaughter twice more in the greatest years. Then later with... check this bill out, headliner, Alice Cooper, Warrant, before the loss......, Dokken, Slaughter, in a little, old brick building in Dallas, Famously known as the, Dallas Sportatorium!!!! Holyshit that building began wrestling waaaay back, VonErics anyone?? Before the bullshit. Anyway this was way later in all the bands careers, you could freely walk up to the bus’s parked on curb and chat and maybe a beer, better times than any autograph, real people, they weren’t making money on that tour , lineups and old small venues, low ticket prices and merch, I believe it took them all back to beginnings, and was the interaction ALL the fans always wanted. I want to go back in time!,but..... pass on to the kids and grandkids!! 🤘🏻☠️HORNS UP ☠️🤘🏻

I can say that it was probably the way they treated their fans that made them a household name. I just went to a slaughter concert last week and came early for soundcheck, before soundcheck started they came down and talked to the fans and gave hugs to me, my mom, and another huge slaughter fan. They are so down to earth and the way that the hardcore fans act is unlike almost all other bands, they love everything about slaughter and support them through it all. Also i was backstage for a show a couple years back and they took me onstage to sing the chorus of up all night which was super cool (arcada theater, st. charles illinois 2018). They're super amazing people and if they're playing near you, see them. You wont regret it.

My wife and I saw Slaughter in Dallas at a place called the Dallas Music Factory. I had no idea what it was, but it turned out that the venue was being held in an old factory building in downtown Dallas. They had portable AC units cooling down the place and about 3,500 fans showed up to the show. The show had Dokken, Warrant, Slaughter and Alice Cooper was the headline. I ended up getting a Dokken tour shirt, but looking back, I should have bought a shirt from Slaughter. They put on an excellent show, only being outdone by the exceptional Alice Cooper.

I met Mark and the band after a show back in circa 92/93. They put on a great show and every song sounded just like their albums. AMAZING!!! Mark even left the stage, walked strait through the audience all the way back to the guy working the mixing board for the bands. He handcuffed the guy to him and took him onto the stage and made him sing with him. Mark was really cool to me and everyone he met. Great show and memories. On another note, Quiet Riot played the same night and I also not only met them all, but also ran into them on their way back to their Bus after their set. I spoke with them about the band and Randy Roads. What great night.

I lived in Hollywood for about a year, and during that time I discovered The Rainbow. One night while at the club, I walked up to the bar to get a drink. There was another man ordering 6 drinks. I noticed that he was having a hard time trying to carry those drinks, so I offered him some help. We carried those drinks back to the table where he was sitting, and he invited me to join them. After about a half hour I had realized that the man that I helped was Mark Slaughter and there were a few other rockers there including the lead singer for Warrant and the guitarist for Faith No More. I was basically a nobody, but they all treated me as if I was one of their friends. I joked around with them like I would anyone else, and they joked right back at me. We took turns going to get rounds from the bar, and we got pretty messed up. By the end of the night Mark got kicked out for spilling a drink on the owner. (I still think the owner bumped into him.) I'll never forget how these rock stars treated me. It was with dignity and a sense of knowing that they were once a guy like me. I would hang out with Mark Slaughter anytime!

Everything has it's moment, then the moment is gone. Grunge didn't kill those bands. Bad or corny music killed it. Bands like Slaughter, Warrant, Cinderella, Bullet Boys. Firehouse, etc. They all got some notoriety and then it was time to move on. Bands like Pearl Jam. Nirvana. Alice-n-Chains, Soundgarden, were all superior lyrically and musically. It was nothing personal. I've seen quite a few of them in concert when a friend of mine worked for a local paper and got free tickets to alot of shows. Usually in small venues. I had fun at some, but some did suck. Badly. It burned brightly for awhile and had it's time. It's not Led Zeppelin or the Who. It's not immortalized forever and ever

I am from Vegas and so followed Mark's career as he went through Vinnie Vincent Invasion & then in2 Slaughter. I won meet & greet passes for Slaughter on a radio station during the Ozzy & Ugly Kid Joe tour...It was in SLC, Utah in 1991...I went HUGELY pregnant. These guys were the nicest young men...Not cocky or conceited, but confident, nice musicians. It was like a 3 hour lunch BBQ and they mingled around, had some laughs and were just everyday dudes. Went 2 the concert that night, I had a friend that worked the venue so we were BSing with her by the back docks...All of a sudden Blaus Elias(drummer) came riding past us on a little dirt bike, bicycle...He had a hoodie on so you couldn't see his long hair, but our eyes met & we recognized each other as he rode off in2 the crowd...I remember thinking how insane he was for riding in2 everyone but realized that no one would know it was him, and what a cool way 2 see your fans up close & personal. Later saw them with Poison & Trixter and loved them through their entire career. Classy, genuine, no gimmicks, musicians!!!

I love Kiss and listen to all of these albums from time to time, but the only reason Kiss stayed a (mostly) hard rock bands is that their fans wouldn't let them do otherwise! Funny how grunge, today, is more tied to the mid-late 90s, with not having heard a Nirvana or Pearl Jam son in 20 years. I think the were too raw. Man what a weird time. U2 went pop-punk and into the coo-coos nest. Nobody at my high school knew whether to wear ripped stonewashed jeans and a Quicksilver shirt, or Girbeaus and Birkenstocks. Styles in music and clothing lost their radar.

Man. I remember 1989/1990. I was JUST getting into music outside of "wheels on the bus" kiddie nursery rhyme stuff (I was 8 then. Come on) I hadn't seen anything on MTV. I was in Podunk, Clovis, New Mexico, my father was working at Canon AFB and my parents had also separated that year, divorced the next. My aunt Jackie was feeding me all this new music and even she was excited when me and my brother were dropped off one morning for babysitting and she played "Fly To The Angels". The next summer, I had enough saved up from allowance and doing yard work and went to Sam Goody, walking away with three cassettes; Michael Jackson "Thriller" (thanks radio), AC/DC "Razor's Edge" (thanks aunt Jackie) and Slaughter "Stick It To Ya" (again, Jackie). Can you guess which cassette got stretched out and nearly unplayable first? ;) It was also the first CD I purchased to replace my growing cassette collection (again, mid 90's, not everyone had money, especially kids). I STILL listen to Slaughter today. For talent show in high school, me and some guys got together (me on vocals) and played "Fly To The Angels" (special since a dear friend to us and the clique I was in (goths. Yeah. Weird, eh?) had been murdered) and "Spend My Life" (dedicated to my high school sweetheart, still dedicated to this day even after no longer being in a relationship) and again when I had an actual music project covered "Spend My Life" in a kind of industrial metal sound in 2018... Slaughter has been such a big hit with me. I loved metal music my entire life and a soft spot for "hair band" and "pop metal", but Slaughter is always in heavy rotation. I at least got to see them live this last year, so life in complete in a way. I remember Mark showing up to high school band class once to give a kind of inspirational speech when I was in high school in around 1998? I was a Junior then so it had to be 98-99. Las Vegas High School (NOT Las Vegas Academy). The rest of the band is just as down to earth with no huge egos and "wholesome" I like my druggie, fast and hard bands too, but Slaughter is on their own great level.
