The Slavic languages (also called Slavonic languages) are the Indo-European languages spoken by the Slavic peoples. They are thought to descend from a proto-language called Proto-Slavic spoken during the Early Middle Ages, which in turn is thought to have descended from the earlier Proto-Balto-Slavic language, linking the Slavic languages to the Baltic languages in a Balto-Slavic group within the Indo-European family.
The Slavic languages are divided intro three subgroups: East, West, and South, which together constitute more than twenty languages. Of these, ten have at least one million speakers and official status as the national languages of the countries in which they are predominantly spoken: Russian, Belarusian and Ukrainian (of the East group), Polish, Czech and Slovak (of the West group) and Slovene, Serbo-Croatian, Macedonian and Bulgarian (of the South group).
The current geographic distribution of natively spoken Slavic languages covers Eastern Europe, the Balkans, Central Europe and all of the territory of Russia, which includes northern and north-central Asia. Furthermore, the diasporas of many Slavic peoples have established isolated minorities of speakers of their languages all over the world. The number of speakers of all Slavic languages together is estimated to be 315 million. Despite the large extent, the individual Slavic languages are considerably less differentiated than Germanic and Romance languages.

Nemac in Slavic means mute one or the one that can't speak. While Sloven comes from slovo, sloviti which means to speak. That shows how the old Slavs made distinction between those who spoke their language or the foreigners whom they didn't understand.

What the old maps show is who ruled the land, not who lived on it, what culture they belonged to, or what language they spoke. Similarly, the Bulgars were under the Ottoman Empire for a long time (until Russia helped them regain independence), yet they use the Cyrillic alphabet today. @mugur de fluier in 1920 romanian language got 50% slavic words in 1940 it drop to the 25 no it is around 15%. So look by this Slavic language is indo-european as iranian to so that is conection. There isnt prof that all slavic tribes mixed with iranians and there is no prof that scytians where iranian tribe. Because Scytians where mixed region its not a tribe its region with domination of one way but there is proof that scytians got 7 diferent languages and you can find that facts. Russiand like and investigate theory that they descendent from scytians. Other slavic "tribes" dont. For example Serbs come on balkan from 2 region Boyki (in today poland) and from Lusitian Serbia (in today germany). Romania they sey decend from Dacians. All that slavic migration isnt 100% ture because if that is so easy Roman empire will spred to the baltic... so that isn true because today rivers Daniube Don.. .was large obsticle for masive migration and there is food problem how can that be true. Many army expert know how much man can cros trough wild terain. And imagine that mass of 50 000 ppl is going somewhere how much food they need to store and how much wather they need and food for animals.... all that trough swampy EUROPE... so there is clear diference betwen south slavs and the other slavs. Because mir on serbian mean Peace on Russian mean World. And word for comparations are usuali diferent like mother father life eye bread. There is lot diferences but you cant say that slavs took many wors from latin or from romania or hungari but yes there is mix of cultures somewhere in 2 close willage in serbia or bosnia mentality of ppl is diferent. So if wilages can be diferent and the same by national why there cant be similars betwen borderline ppl in 2 contrys...

Great video! There is one issue I would like to point out, but it's not really a mistake, more of an understandable simplification: As it is shown at 4:50, Polish become the lingua franca in the areas of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Since then until WWII there would be a significant Polish-speaking minority all over the area marked as Ruthenian/Belarussian and Ukrainian, especially its western part (in some places and areas even being the majority), and going a bit beyond it in Lithuania. I understand that it would be hard to show on that map without making it a confusing mess. BTW Pan Tadeusz - Polish epic poem mentioned at 5:35 starts with the words "Lithuania, my country!" and takes place in modern-day western Belarus. :)

Lviv was polish speaking untill 1945, so there should be a blue spot there. There are parts of modern Poland that used to have ukrainian majority and vice-versa. Its just hard to make such maps, the population was very mixed. For the same logic he should show a drastic reduction in ukrainian speaking population after Holodomor and replacement of its population with russians. Or how belarussian steadly became an unused language after the proclamation of the soviet union. Lots of details missed, you cant blame the author for that.

The Cyrillic alphabet is created by Cyrillic and methods, in Pliska it is in Bulgaria, thanks to the Bulgarians the whole world writes in Cyrillic .. Kliment Ohridski are 100% Bulgarians , also Cyril and Methodius created the Glagolitic alphabet, the Cyrillic alphabet was made for the Bulgarians and then they decided to give it to the Russians, and the Russians spread it

@Azow, between Slavs we also have misunderstandings and historical conflicts: Poles and Ukrainians, Serbs and Croats, Bulgarians and Macedonians. But all Slavs and Europeans in general have too many common threats to recall the negative past. We need to be in solidarity with each other.

I'm not an expert, but there seems to be a bit of a historical gap, if we have protoslavic in 1000 bc (already separated from the baltic languages) and by 600 ad the slavs still speak the same language. Or perhaps for some reason the slavic language was so conservative that it did not split in almost two millenia and then suddenly it split into many languages.

@@ravkoleavikk8577 Weak? .I think the opposite. - Weak western Europe, which all this time lived in a greenhouse, because from the east it was protected by Russian lands. These "weak slaves" ALWAYS beat you. Can you tell who can fight the Russians? The Russians will kill absolutely anyone, because the whole story has fought and won in all wars. . 4 great armies of the world, Chingizkhan, Karl 12, Napoleon and Hitler, are buried in the Russian land. And how many armies were simply buried is impossible to count. If someone else has a desire to fight the Russians, it will turn into a nuclear catastrophe.

@@user-qu3gc3lf4x how much more should I say... Kliment worked in Ohrid (towards the middle of Northern Macedonia today), the first examples of Cyrillic are from Pliska (Northeastern Bulgaria today). It's not certain that it wasn't him, but it is highly unlikely that he did. Him creating it actually isn't even based on a particular source, it's just accepted without particular proof. Like half of Bulgarian and "Slavic" history though.

@@JJFlashBang It is not true at all. Bulgarian was the country which saved the Cyril and Metodius alphabet. A lot of school were built to learn and spread the alphabet, a lot of church books were written at that time. So many church books were written in Bulgarian language that later went to the neighbour countries and even to Russia and probably that is why the language is known as church Bulgarian language. And yes, the church books were written in old Bulgarian language.
