This painting is number 5 of a 8 picture series about Caravaggio and his painting technique I started in mach 2020.
Here you can see a good way to start and finish a painting in the old manner.
At the beginning you paint the light with white. You need mostly 2 or more sessions with drying time between. I wait until the layers are completely dried.
In the middle of the work, you start colouring the white paint. I add the oils translucent, so you can see the deepts and hights showing through.
After this it is time for the shadow areas.
When you come to the end, you start glazing. You add only a small amount of colour to deepen the shadows, brighten the colours and bring all the tones together.
The colour palette is simply: Lead White, Yellow Ochre, Natural & Burnt Siena, Natural and Burnt Umber, Vermillion, Van Dyckbrown and Ironoxide Black.
No blues are used.
My painting medium is fast drying oil. I take blackoil (linseed oil cooked with lead pigments) or linseed oil varnish from the hardware store. I don´t use any solvents in my paintings.
Have fun with this video!
