This painting is one of my Caravaggio exercises. It is painted with selfmade oilcolour. The main colours are Umber and Boneblack for the background, Leadwhite, Siena and Venetian Red for the skintones and Lapislazuli and Verditer for the greenbluish part of the trousers.
Like all my paintings it is done in several layers. I´m only painting over it, when the layer is completely dried. That takes about 1-3 days, depending on the colour and medium.

The painting is no more attributed to Caravaggio. Scholars agree that it was painted by Spadarino (as expressed for example by Mina Gregori and Gianni Papi, two of the major experts of Caravaggio and the caravaggism). Just to inform 😁

What medium did you use since you say it took 3 days between layers? Linseed oil? or galkyds? Edit: Amazing vídeo, keep up the good work!

I take linseed oil varnish or selfmade blackoil (linseed oil cooked with lead white), never any solvents. The earth pigments normally need 1 day for drying but organic pigments like charcoal black take up to three days.

For the Caravaggio paintings I used lead white.

When following this tutorial, should you wait for the based white, shadowy brown layer to dry? Or move on to details and complex skin tones without letting the white layer dry?
