Known as the "Den Den Mushi's", these little critters often have a weird resemblance to the people in charge owning them (little beards and stuff like that). They actually (s)nailed them pretty well in this live adaptation, if you know what I mean. You'll learn to love them eventually.

The Snail Phones, aka Transponder Snails or the Den Den Mushi, are this world's common tech for telecommunications, so Nami could be talking to anyone. The snails are telepathic and can talk to each other at long distances, so they're basically wireless, living pet phones for a world where many people are on the ocean. Though they're definitely cuter when animated as opposed to actually looking like, well, a real talking snail. In the anime there's a running gag where people dress their snail phones up to look like their owners, and the snail also imitates the facial expressions of the remote speaker as they're talking (which probably would look even creepier in live action).

In the manga and anime, Shanks come rescue Luffy by swimming so we know that at least in the past where this flashback takes place, he did not have a devil fruit. As to whether or not you can eat two, the story will talk about it eventually although not in the first couple of seasons xD And as said, the sea monster bit Shanks' arm iff when he threw his first attack.

They really shouldn't have changed Shanks in the water with luffy to in a boat with Luffy. Despite having the explanation five seconds earlier that just a few splashes of seawater render devil fruit powers useless every live action audience member thinks Shanks has a devil fruit power.

Shanks doesn't have a devil fruit. Most people don't. In fact, its just best to assume someone doesn't have a devil fruit unless explicitly stated just like in Buggy's case. Some people are just powerful in other ways. Some are just super strong and some are super fast. A devil fruit is unmistakable as its just pretty much magic and can't be explained by someone just being strong. Shanks used an ability that's not going to come up until much much later (at this point in the original story it didn't even exist. It was initially just to show how fierce of a pirate Shanks was. So strong he can scare away a sea beast) but that was retconned later. All devil fruits are weak to sea water. Shanks wouldn't have been able to swim to Luffy if he had one.

Yes we haven’t found the one piece yet 😂 but currently the series is going into its final saga so we still have at the very least 5 years left of one piece before it ends and yet we still have many questions left that are going to be answered. One of the reasons why one piece is the most selling manga and currently dominating all forms of media is because of its longevity. You see someone from episode 150 who isn’t a big deal until 500 episodes later, one piece is arguably one of the best and complex storyline that has ever came to light in the anime industry. If/whenever you guys ever get into one piece (hopefully not anytime soon, it’s a big series) as much as I do recommend using one pace to make the pacing better, I’d suggest first to watch the original material for the first half of the series (specifically first 516 episodes) because its editing is very sloppy and cuts out a lot of the comedy, but after that you guys can hop on one pace if you feel like the pacing is too much to handle.

You girls have been introduce to one of Oda's(one piece creator) favorite side characters, buggy the clown. We in the fandom have different names for him but yah not ready for that yet 💯😂 Also You will see the characters outfits changed from time to time that's ester eggs for the manga fan's like myself. You see in the manga the characters were the same outfits for the most part, however Oda likes to change it up and show each character their own unique styles on the cover pages(which is canon) during their down time. So Matt Owens an the crew at Netflick add that to the show.

Oda specifically made it so Luffy and Buggy are inverses of each other. Not only do their names rhyme but Luffy is immune to bullets but is weak to swords while Buggy is immune to swords but is weak to bullets.

The character names are given in Japanese style, with the family name first and the given name last. We meet at least two more members of the Monkey family throughout the course of the series (I won't say their names or in what way they're related to Luffy so as to avoid spoilers). Just keep this naming convention in mind for any character introduced that has more than one name. Monkey D. Luffy, Roronoa Zoro, Gold Roger, etc. So, when your friend said "Luffy D. Monkey," that was TECHNICALLY correct in that it would be the right way to say Luffy's name in the normal western style, but his name has never been westernized in any version or translation of the series, so it just feels awkward to a long-time fan like myself. The "snail phones" are called denden mushi or transponder snails, and they are the primary means of communication in the One Piece world. There are also video denden mushi which are able to transmit live video; the transmitting snail sends what it sees, and the receiving snail projects the video from its eyes so people can watch. The gag where Luffy never gets Buggy's name right is straight from the manga. Interestingly, Boogie was originally going to be the characters name until Oda saw something else that had a clown named Boogie and he didn't want anyone to draw comparisons between them so he changed it to Buggy. Shanks' sharpshooter that made that awesome ricochet shot is named Yasopp, and he will be relevant again soon. And yes, Makino's bar is called Partys Bar. There are powers other than Devil Fruits in the One Piece world. Some people naturally have extreme strength or speed or other abilities that have nothing to do with Devil Fruits. As for how Shanks ran off the Lord of the Coast (the sea monster), that was a different power that will not be explained (or even named) for a few hundred chapters worth of manga (if I had to estimate, I would guess it will show up in season six or seven if the show goes that long). Shanks lost his arm to the Lord of the Coast when it lunged at him and Luffy (I really think I thought I saw it drop the arm in the wide shot immediately after when it's pulling back, but I could be wrong). But no, it didn't actually show him losing the arm; the camera was focused on his and Luffy's faces at the time it happened. The series IS still running; the manga is currently at 1093 chapters. Oda has said that he expects to end the series within five years, but he has given that answer pretty much every time an interviewer has ever asked how much longer the series will last, so most fans are of a "we'll believe it when we see it" mindset. No, the One Piece has not yet been found in the manga. Oda has said, however that it definitely does exist and that it is an actual physical thing that can be touched, not just an idea or concept like friendship. There are actually several theories in the fandom of what the One Piece could be. I could recommend some good One Piece KZfaqrs that have a lot of interesting theory, but as you're (currently) only watching the live action series, virtually every video on their channels would contain MASSIVE spoilers. If you really want to dive into the fandom, then my advice would be to read the manga up to its most recent chapter or at least watch all of the anime (it's about a year to a year and a half behind the manga, but it would still get you MOST of the way there). I'm enjoying you reactions so far, so I will definitely keep going, at least through this series. If you decide to watch the anime, I will certainly watch those reactions as well.

This is not a spoiler, because it's something that in the anime is understood but here it may not be for the mass audience: Yes, a lot of people have some "superhuman" techniques or abilities that do not belong to DF powers In fact, tho it's not shown much in this LA show Luffy and Zoro display feats of strength that are superhuman. And that is just because they are strong. Like anime strong. So pretty much when a DF is involved the show will tell you that they have one. If nothing is said and you just see that they are really strong or fast it's just because they are strong and fast or have learned techniques (like a martial art) that make that possible in this universe. Other times maybe is just a race that has particular atributes. I only clarify this because a ton of people (and mostly people not used to anime) never think about it that way. Tho with time they will kind of get it when a lot of examples appear. Either way, really enjoying the reactions :)

Of all the one piece newbies I've watched for the past weeks, you guys we're the first to really figure out the boat thing and the arm thing. Not even seasoned fans did which they argue a weakness of the show. But its a testament that they left crumbs. They showed shanks full arms. They showed the initial boat toppled. Shanks doesn't eat a devil fruit. It's a power later explained in the manga and anime (we didn't find out until years later what it was actually called, so I won't spoil it.) As for how he got to Luffy...no one actually knows. In the anime, he just appears (like here) and I'm guessing we're left to our own imagination in the manga considering this new power that we see from Shanks. Also, the sea creature did bite off his arm.

Since there are alot of answers given for the questions about the Transponder Snails I've decided type an Oceanography Class on creatures of the World of One Piece. In the lands, seas, and air of the world One Piece every creature has a Type Classification. Type A - Big and Friendly Type B - Small and Friendly Type C - Big and Savage Type D - Small and Savage Transponder Snails are a Type B creature that have psychic abilities. They communicate to one another via telepathy. People who discovered this ability found a way to talk from one Transponder Snail to another, thus making the communication network for the entire world. No matter where you are, you can be reached if you have a Transponder Snail. There are also Mega Phone types, Baby Transponder types(seen with Nami), Camera types, and Video types.

Girls, not everyone in One Piece has a Devil Fruit. I don't want to spoil but take note that there is another kind of "power" in One Piece that does not came from a Devil Fruit. That's why Shanks can swim and saved Luffy from drowning, and able to send off the Sea King (name in One Piece for big sea creatures from the sea).

in the anime and manga the boat gets destroyed on the first attack of the monster and when the sea beast is going to eat Luffy, Shanks appears in the water to save him (losing his arm) and then, he scares the creature. So he hasn't eat a devil fruit (at least at that point) and he uses some kind of power or something; first to arrive and then to scare the sea beast... GOda stuff

About Shanks, he don't have any devil fruit power (in fact, nobody of his crew have), he use something to calm the sea king (there's a lot of sea kings) that I'm not sure I should tell, 'cause is a big spoiler from the anime/manga. But just know there are people so strong that they have a rare power (devil fruit users can have too).

I don't think any of the official translations change the name order, and I haven't encountered a fan translation that does either. So good on Oda for getting westerners to use the Japanese name order.

Just an FYI: Every "telephone" in the One Piece world is a snail. They are called den-den mushi. And usually, in the manga, they resemble the one using them. In the series, you can see them emulating this by Garp's den-den mushi having a beard like his.

I understand many are confused if shanks ate a devil fruit with that eye thing. Just basing on this episode with no manga and anime spoilers we can assume he does not. With no other boats around and not even a wreckage of another boat assuming the one shanks is in is a different one, the only way shanks could get there is by swimming (a really unnoticeable feature is shanks wet hair) and the one they are in is still the same boat the bandit used. Key point here is "Mother Ocean turns her back to those who made a deal with the devil" so yeah no splashysplash fun time on sea water.

Other people have alr said this but the LA doesn’t explain it very well. Most people not in the grand line have never even heard of devil fruits because they are rare, and not everyone has one. Also sometimes having a devil fruit power doesn’t make someone strong just as not having a power doesn’t mean someone is weak. For example Shanks and Garp do not have devil fruits. Also devil fruit users cannot swim, but that’s only devil fruit users, which is why Shanks and many others can swim. It’s kind of a gag but in the anime and manga, there are scenes where Luffy will jump into the sea because he falls or he sees something cool and the rest of the crew are forced to jump in the sea to get him out.

So, it is kinda confusing and the show never explain, but every character's name follow traditional Japanese order. So his given name *is* 'Luffy', with 'Monkey D.' being the family name. It is common in translation to invert names, but that is not done for One Piece.
